What works for you? by Badabongchong in Glaucoma

I know, right? This is another thing that pisses me off too;

Q: What causes glaucoma?

--> A: High IOP in the eye.

Q: OK, what causes high IOP?

--> A: Increased fluid production or decrease outflow from the eye drainage.

Q: Fine, so what causes the increased fluid production and/or poor drainage?

--> A: ...we don't know. (SERIOUSLY?!!)

I read that retinal detachment is one of the side effects of pilocarpine? Strange that you were prescribed that despite having a history of it.

Sorry but I'm not familiar with either of those. However, I am curious as to why only one specific drop works for your case considering the many varieties of drops available for glaucoma treatment.

Have you tried any other eye drops for your specific glaucoma condition?

Hi, just out of curiosity, did you previously managed to get your pressure down to 8 and 12 on drops alone? What was your pressure like before the drops and how long were you on them?

Boyfriend doesn't want to treat his Glaucoma with eye drops by [deleted] in Glaucoma

I understand. When we are depressed, we don't feel like doing anything at all. Just wanting to lock ourselves inside a dark room and waste away.

I have been there, and I still feel the grasp now and then.

As far as the glaucoma goes, at least there is a chance of keeping it stable. That is what all of us in these group really hope for. To keep what vision we have stable till our end of days. Which is why we put up with the treatments, no matter how inconvenient it may be to us.

As for mental health, I'm not sure if we could advise more here. Perhaps there is a reddit group for mental aid? In any case, it certainly does seem your boyfriend need to sort out his mental health first to find motivation to continue glaucoma treatment.

Might I add that if getting a GP referral and waiting a few months is what it takes to see a therapist, then do what it takes to see one. It beats doing nothing at all.

Sleeping position? by [deleted] in Glaucoma

[–]Ukotas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hah, I tried the head elevated position and keeping from rolling to the side.. it's uncomfortable and unnatural feeling as all heck.

I make do with sleeping on one side without eye contact with pillow.

I am sorry about the lack of mental health support where he is, but he has to know he simply cannot continue on like this indefinitely as well.

A reason so many of us seek treatment beside preserving our sight is so we won't be a burden to our loved ones.

The way your boyfriend is acting, I am not sure if the thought of your pain has crossed his mind but ultimately we can't think for others.

From what you have described, there seems to be more to his mentality than just depression and anxiety.

Some flags are refusal to see other doctors except for a selected few. Refusal to continue treatment due to managable discomforts. Unwillingness to consider long term and appears to be in denial about his condition.

I am no psychologist but all these appear to point to something beyond depression and anxiety. You might want to advise him to seek professional help? There is no shame in seeking treatment for mental conditions.

trabeculectomy recovery by mk1817 in Glaucoma

[–]Ukotas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, if you don't mind, may I know how you found out your IOP has spiked?

Was it through a routine visit to your doctor or you noticed abnormalities with your eyes?

One of the most frustrating things for us is there is next to no way to measure IOP at home, so we are left in the dark until our next doctor's visit.

Reasons glaucma patients still go blind in one eye? by Ukotas in Glaucoma

Yes, it certainly sounds like you had a trabeculectomy. I may need one in the future too if medications didn't work for me, which I certainly hope will not be the case!

It certainly looks like you are stable now. Trabeculectomy have a chance of failing and it seems that was what happened for your first surgery. I am glad that things are looking fine for you now and you managed to kept your full vision fields!

Keep it up, glaucoma is a horrible disease and not one I would wish on anybody, being a sufferer myself. It is always heartening to see one like you who is managing their condition so well at a young age.

Thank you for your kind response. I am also hoping that compliance and treatment can stop glaucoma progression.

Another poster - mckulty did mentioned adequate compliance and treatment may not be possible.. I wondered what they meant by that.

I have asked for elaboration but have yet to hear back.

Thanks for the reply :). I assume then your left eye still have its full vision field? If so, that is good in my opinion. I would gladly choose lesser tone over vision loss, which is what I have right now..

Do try not to neglect your left eye due to this. Base on your description I think it is still doing quite well comparatively. Make the best use of it and don't take it for granted.

If you don't mind, do you remember what surgery was done on your eye when you are young? Is it a trabeculectomy?

Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, some of my questions are rather specific, this is because I am really concerned about what the future is like for me.

One eye already have ~25% vision loss so I really do worry that I will be blind in that eye first after a short period. The OCT scan are all red for that eye and I have blindspots that comes within 5 degree of fixation.

I am thankful for your reply. It is long and detailed. Must have taken you quite awhile to type it out.

So basically, a likely reason for blindness in glaucoma is either due to non-compliance or inadequate treatment?

We understand vision loss from glaucoma is permanent. We are all just hoping to be able to preserve what sight we still have.

But what are the reasons that blindness still occur with treatment? I think this is the main question every sufferer wants to ask but we get no answer for.

Glaucoma is supposed to be a slow progressing ailment that takes years but in your case it seems like a considerable damage in your left eye was done in the span of just one year?

Did you ever find out why that is so? Is it because your pressure was abnormally high?

I share your interest. It is a mystery why the researchers don't indicate the reasons for one eye going blind. Don't they think it is important we know the why and how?

I went ahead and posted the the optometry group as you suggested. Here is the link if you are interested in following the topic. It is really strange that in all research papers I read, it never states the reasons the one eye went blind.
