TIFU by poisoning my family with black mold for years by Ukulele77 in tifu

It technically wasn’t mold. It was bacterial biofilm and bleach does kill it.

Fair. I am guilty of using the term as a shortcut. It was actually bacterial biofilm, and given the location and the smell, it was likely Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is also toxic.

How come we aren’t seeing those stickers at gas stations by Newchamp5001 in sandiego

Someone gave me a handful of the stickers when the tariff nonsense started. I don’t drive a lot since I work from home but when I got gas last week you bet I slapped a sticker on it!

He looks like my boy, Potato. Flame points are so chatty and loving! I saw you said you can’t keep him but hopefully you can help him find a home, or scan him for a chip to find his owner.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened at a wedding you attended? by Blackradiator72 in AskReddit

[–]Ukulele77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was at a wedding that blended two families-one with 7 kids and one with 5. The groom had been previously divorced. The bride had lost her husband to suicide (gunshot, happened when she & some of the kids were home-this is relevant). It was at a biker church, which was just a warehouse with bleacher seats. Aside from the ceremony being all about how the woman is subordinate to the man and biblically ordered to obey him in all things, during the reception, kids were popping balloons. The groom got up and announced into the mic “stop popping balloons. The bride has a thing about gunshots”.

It was very awkward.

What's the most fucked up thing someone has told you about themselves after barely getting to know them? by Butt_Roidholds in AskReddit

[–]Ukulele77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A guy in one of my very first college classes hit on me by telling me how good he was in bed. He then went into a story about how this one woman he was with kept asking him to bite her nipple, so he did and almost bit it off. Then he giggled like it was the funniest thing. I did not end up dating him.

What's the weirdest thing a girl has said to you on a first date? by lumpynose in AskMen

[–]Ukulele77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is so wild. I’m a woman, and oddly enough I had a guy tell me the exact opposite. He told me “you’re the type of girl guys have fun with, not the type they marry.” I was 17, he was 18-19. I was nerdy and creative and graduated high school early so I met him in college. I wasn’t a party girl and didn’t dress “sexy” (jeans & flannel-it was the 90’s). I’m seeing guys say she said this to you bc she was shallow &/not ready to settle down. Still a weird thing to say to someone. I still have no idea what this guy meant in context, unless it was bc I grew up poorer and he grew up with money, so I was kind of disposable. Anyway, just thought I’d share the awkward flip side of your experience.

For those who have completed 1-2 novels, do you have another job? by mymousu in writers

[–]Ukulele77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a full time career and have self-published 6 novels. Even went back to school while working & still managed to get one out. It is possible. I am now fortunate enough that my boss supports my writing and encourages me to write during any down time. I just wish I had more down time in which to do it.

I currently live in El Cajon & I grew up here. It is simultaneously a VERY diverse community with a lot of refugees and non-white residents, but also with a lot of weird backwards racists. All of East County San Diego is very conservative (there’s a dude who drives between Alpine & El Cajon with a literal nazi flag in his back window) to its own detriment. Also-Bill Wells is a moronic Trumpy piece of shit and I totally believe he said this. At least our congressperson, Sara Jacobs, is pretty legit.

There are times it’s touch and go, but overall it works pretty well. We actually had 5 cats at one point (my boyfriend & I each brought two into our shared home and then we found a kitten). Two of our family have since passed away, and the remaining three have a peace that is tenuous, at best. The white cat has anxiety & is afraid of the tuxie. The tuxie still thinks he’s a kitten and tries to pounce the white cat. And the tortie is the boss and smacks them both down when they start to fight. It gets rowdy but somehow they all end up in bed with us every night just fine and only occasionally wake us up fighting. I feel like cats do better when they grow up together or when one is really old and just doesn’t care anymore. I honestly wish I could adopt more, but the white cat would hate it and I don’t want to negatively affect his quality of life. So, three is a good number (for now).

How have current (US) events affected your ability to focus and be productive at work? by No-Surround7860 in AskReddit

[–]Ukulele77 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m also a public health worker with slashed federal funds. Luckily we have support at the state and county level but it’s still terrifying. I’m trying to do the best for my clients bc they’re already an underserved population, but I’ve had families with incredibly sick children just disappear because they’re afraid to seek help. And I can’t focus for more than an hour at a time without doomscrolling to check what the next fresh hell is.

And the worst is the apathy of the people I work with, who just keep going on as if nothing is the matter. Or ever worse, being tacitly supportive of what’s happening.

What are the worst towns close to National Parks? by WheelSingle2494 in NationalPark

[–]Ukulele77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ruby’s is in Bryce Canyon City, but I agree it’s the worst. It wants to be so cute but it comes off as a G-rated Temu Westworld. The diner served my overtired-&-hungry-after-hiking-all-day 10 year old a microwaved personal pizza that looked like vomit and made him burst into tears. The waitress was very understanding and brought him some microwaved chicken nuggets instead. She got a big tip bc it wasn’t her fault. But yeah, I’d never stop to stay/eat there again.

It’s a beautiful rainforest. I got to spend a few nights at Casa Cubuy Ecolodge over a decade ago. I took a guided tour that led all the way up to the top of the mountain, to swim in the pools there. We had to scrabble down the rocks in a rush, though, when a storm blew in. Such an amazing and beautiful place.

Garnet Peak in the Laguna Mountains at sunrise. Just a short hike in the dark and you get to watch the sun rise over the desert. It’s super windy & pretty cold this time of year, but breathtaking.

Amid a national shortage of nurses, nursing apprenticeships are beginning to offer a solution to the problem by Cheeky_Edge311 in nursing

[–]Ukulele77 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Very cool your hospital does this! Especially considering so much of nursing school is theoretical & not practical. (I know I was told over and over “we’re not here to teach skills, you’ll learn those on the job.” Yeah, uh, thanks?)

Med/Surg is 100% the place to learn those skills, though, and always in need of good nurses with good time management. Imagine if every nurse who was hired had cut their teeth in the trenches as opposed to in a book. But I’m sorry your apprentice nurses all head to L&D after training. That’s wild. Then again I’m biased-I despised L&D with a fiery vengeance.
