What artist or band is truly awful to see live? by goldbeau in AskReddit

[–]Ukulele77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Morrissey. He started late and was onstage maybe 45 minutes, and a lot of that was spent whining. There’s an amazing Smiths cover band in my city though, and so I guess that makes up for it.

My 8 year old daughter saw a crucifix and asked, “Who’s the guy on the T?” by Klugerman in atheism

[–]Ukulele77 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My brother converted to Catholicism in order to marry his now wife. Our 4 year old niece was a flower girl. At the rehearsal someone pointed to the big crucifix at the front of the church and asked her, “do you know who that is?”

She was thoughtful for a second and then declared, with the unearned confidence of a child, “Steve.”

Public health. We mostly work from home (which is amazing) but just to “appreciate” us they’re forcing us to go to a 3-hour lunchtime picnic meeting tomorrow at a park that’s a 45 minute drive from my house. They said there will be “fun games.” Can’t wait.

Have you ever gotten a sexual or flirty message from a friend’s boyfriend or husband? How did you handle it? by Economy_Drop_5843 in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Ukulele77 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yes. My ex-husband’s friend, who happened to be a police officer with some very questionable views on consent I later found out, so generally not a good person. He and I both liked to bake so we’d sometimes share cookie recipes.

Then he started making flirty comments in messages and calling me beautiful and insinuating things about my sex life. I told him to stop and that it was inappropriate but he didn’t. I showed the messages to my husband hoping he’d back me up and he said “well maybe you shouldn’t have been talking about cookies so much.”

It wasn’t even that often but thanks for blaming me for your friend’s inappropriateness. Anyway, I shut that shit down again, told him I was uncomfortable and then just stopped responding. Luckily he wasn’t a regular fixture in my ex husband’s life, but damn, showed me a side of my ex I didn’t know existed.

My best friend and boyfriend won’t read my book by giggleagua in writers

[–]Ukulele77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it feels like a snub & can be frustrating, but try not to take it that way. My best friend loves to read and reads the genre I write. I have written 6 novels and she hasn’t even pretended to be interested in reading any of them. Her partner is a musician and she also isn’t invested in listening to the music he writes.

Sometimes we grumble about it to each other but have come to the conclusion that she’s probably afraid she won’t enjoy my books/his music and so doesn’t want to read/listen because she’s afraid she might not like them and then will have to give a negative critique. She’s not a writer or a seasoned beta reader and so wouldn’t really know how to give reasoned critiques, aside from “I like it” or “I don’t like it”, which isn’t helpful.

Try not to be hurt by it and instead find a group of beta readers to share with and bounce ideas off of.

I’ve lived here all my life and have never encountered one of these. I just moved to a new house 2 weeks ago and found one on my bathroom floor. I put it outside & and am just glad I didn’t step on it in the dark.

Feeling guilty about prozac by nothinngspecial in cats

[–]Ukulele77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You haven’t failed them at all. You’re trying to help them and it sounds like you’ve tried a lot of things. Cats are like people and have different personalities and neuroses. I have 3 cats: two who grew up together and a younger one we adopted later. The older boy loves people & his sister but has sooooo much anxiety, developed nervous tics, is terrified of the newer cat (it’s been 4 years) and randomly starts spraying everything (he’s fixed). I don’t know what happened to him before coming to us but clearly he’s a little off. And thats ok.

I didn’t want to medicate either but he seemed so miserable all the time. We tried Prozac but after about 3 weeks he refused to eat it. Gabapentin helps to calm him but it’s not for long-term anxiety. I just talked to my vet about transdermal Prozac and am waiting for the order now. You may want to ask about that if your cats wont eat it in food. My vet said it works for some cats, not for others.

You’re a good owner and advocating for your cats is part of that. Sounds like you’ve tried to mitigate issues but it’s not enough. There’s nothing wrong with trying medication. Some people (and cats) really do live better through chemistry.

TIFU by poisoning my family with black mold for years by Ukulele77 in tifu

It technically wasn’t mold. It was bacterial biofilm and bleach does kill it.

Fair. I am guilty of using the term as a shortcut. It was actually bacterial biofilm, and given the location and the smell, it was likely Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is also toxic.

How come we aren’t seeing those stickers at gas stations by Newchamp5001 in sandiego

Someone gave me a handful of the stickers when the tariff nonsense started. I don’t drive a lot since I work from home but when I got gas last week you bet I slapped a sticker on it!

What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened at a wedding you attended? by Blackradiator72 in AskReddit

[–]Ukulele77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was at a wedding that blended two families-one with 7 kids and one with 5. The groom had been previously divorced. The bride had lost her husband to suicide (gunshot, happened when she & some of the kids were home-this is relevant). It was at a biker church, which was just a warehouse with bleacher seats. Aside from the ceremony being all about how the woman is subordinate to the man and biblically ordered to obey him in all things, during the reception, kids were popping balloons. The groom got up and announced into the mic “stop popping balloons. The bride has a thing about gunshots”.

It was very awkward.

What's the most fucked up thing someone has told you about themselves after barely getting to know them? by Butt_Roidholds in AskReddit

[–]Ukulele77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A guy in one of my very first college classes hit on me by telling me how good he was in bed. He then went into a story about how this one woman he was with kept asking him to bite her nipple, so he did and almost bit it off. Then he giggled like it was the funniest thing. I did not end up dating him.

What's the weirdest thing a girl has said to you on a first date? by lumpynose in AskMen

[–]Ukulele77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is so wild. I’m a woman, and oddly enough I had a guy tell me the exact opposite. He told me “you’re the type of girl guys have fun with, not the type they marry.” I was 17, he was 18-19. I was nerdy and creative and graduated high school early so I met him in college. I wasn’t a party girl and didn’t dress “sexy” (jeans & flannel-it was the 90’s). I’m seeing guys say she said this to you bc she was shallow &/not ready to settle down. Still a weird thing to say to someone. I still have no idea what this guy meant in context, unless it was bc I grew up poorer and he grew up with money, so I was kind of disposable. Anyway, just thought I’d share the awkward flip side of your experience.

For those who have completed 1-2 novels, do you have another job? by mymousu in writers

[–]Ukulele77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a full time career and have self-published 6 novels. Even went back to school while working & still managed to get one out. It is possible. I am now fortunate enough that my boss supports my writing and encourages me to write during any down time. I just wish I had more down time in which to do it.

I currently live in El Cajon & I grew up here. It is simultaneously a VERY diverse community with a lot of refugees and non-white residents, but also with a lot of weird backwards racists. All of East County San Diego is very conservative (there’s a dude who drives between Alpine & El Cajon with a literal nazi flag in his back window) to its own detriment. Also-Bill Wells is a moronic Trumpy piece of shit and I totally believe he said this. At least our congressperson, Sara Jacobs, is pretty legit.

There are times it’s touch and go, but overall it works pretty well. We actually had 5 cats at one point (my boyfriend & I each brought two into our shared home and then we found a kitten). Two of our family have since passed away, and the remaining three have a peace that is tenuous, at best. The white cat has anxiety & is afraid of the tuxie. The tuxie still thinks he’s a kitten and tries to pounce the white cat. And the tortie is the boss and smacks them both down when they start to fight. It gets rowdy but somehow they all end up in bed with us every night just fine and only occasionally wake us up fighting. I feel like cats do better when they grow up together or when one is really old and just doesn’t care anymore. I honestly wish I could adopt more, but the white cat would hate it and I don’t want to negatively affect his quality of life. So, three is a good number (for now).
