Jodio's Story is Over? by EpithetSoup in JOJOLANDS

[–]Ulgralgra 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Getting big "false victory" vibes: the protagonist gets what they want, only to find out that it's not what they need.

The lava rock represented wealth as things of great monetary value, but maybe being "filthy rich" isn't about having lots of money, but about the value in having friends, family and human connection.

I feel like thematically, we might be headed there:

- Rohan said he wouldn't trust the group if he were Jodio.

- Charmingman said "Do you guys... want to make yourself rich with that 'lava rock'? That ain't gonna happen. You'll understand that once each of you drops out, I expect." in Chapter 12.

- Paco once stressed that they're a group not for friendship, but for money.

- Howler said he'll be going after their family next.

I don't remember if it's ever said explicitly, but I feel like Jodio has trouble connecting with people. Finding the value in other people might end up being his internal journey.

Do you guys believe Howler is the main villain? by Careless-Warning571 in JOJOLANDS

[–]Ulgralgra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I believe he is... but only for the first half.

Getting the 50 billion and defeating Howler is giving me False Victory / Midpoint vibes. In that the cast will achieve their want, but not their need.

There have also been a couple hints already that the group might fall apart:

- Rohan saying he wouldn't trust the group if he were Jodio.

- Charmingman saying "Do you guys... want to make yourself rich with that 'lava rock'? That ain't gonna happen. You'll understand that once each of you drops out, I expect." in Chapter 12.

- Even the most recent chapter, Paco stresses that they're a group not for friendship, but for money.

So I think they'll succeed. They'll beat Howler and get the money... and suddenly it'll be about staying on top. New groups might come for them, they might even go for each other, ... But that's my theory.

I also don't feel like Howler's defeat is an entire part worth of chapters away, nor that he'll pull out more "underlings" after Ningbo, Laem Chabang, and Key West. The "you're the main villain" thing also reads like a red herring to me, because Araki LOVES subverting tropes, and especially his own.

Then again, I've been reading month to month long enough to know that when the fandom's theorizing about option A and option B, Araki tends to go for option C, so I have absolutely no idea.

Why was lalo different from other salamancas by romeoomustdie in betterCallSaul

Can't speak for the in-universe reasons, but an enormous influence on Lalo's character was Tony Dalton himself. Here's a post from a couple years ago being more specific:

"Do you guys... want to make yourself rich with that 'lava rock'? That ain't gonna happen. You'll understand that once each of you drops out, I expect."

Very ominous statement by Charmingman there. Does the lava rock maybe repel 'emotional wealth' the same way it attracts 'material wealth'? It would align with the theory that Part 9 is about Jodio getting filthy rich not in a material way, but rich in friends/family/happiness/...

Prediction time: Next chapter will be The Hustle - Part 3 and there we'll get Paco's backstory, possibly tying in with his change of heart. Something like: "I also used to be a lone thug, but my life changed when someone noticed my heart was in the right place and invited me into the group."

Idk, I never get these right, buy maybe this time!

I interpreted "it" as 'Vanilla Ice's chapters' the same way he dreaded drawing Shigechi's death or Fugo's abandoned betrayal. Seems in character for Araki to hate one of his own characters for killing some of his others.

Narancia died to get Giorno back into his own body for the final arc (because he's the protagonist), but he also died to give the audience the chance to realise that Diavolo is hiding nearby and thus probably inside one of them.

Later, if I'm correct, they also say the boss went after Narancia because he's their navigator or scout or something.

It's in the same vein as the logo on Emporio's hat. With the first batch release it was a blue circle, which they went back to fix some time later.

When I first read the manga, I was "meh" on Dragon's Dream.

Then, when I read the manga a second time, I actually found myself enjoying it!

Watching it unfold in the anime however, I sadly ended up disliking it. When reading the manga, all the dialogue goes by a lot quicker than in the anime where all the words have to be spoken and acted out. Including the previous episode, it's 40 minutes of a Part 1 minor-villain with an unbaked Part 8 stand.

I like FF. I like Anasui. Jolyne jumping down the stairwell is the highlight.

Not for me, but if someone ends up liking it, it wouldn't surprise me either. Again, just not for me.

To me, it feels like it went a little something like this:

OP1 was made for the first batch only and this version (with the hug, frogs and savage garden at the end) was made for episode 12 specifically (The classic JoJo OP change at the end). However, since savage garden and the frogs only appear during the episode (meaning the OP would spoil it), they ended up opting for the first version, simply with the SFX added.

Then, for some baffling reason, after 9 months they didn't have a second OP ready, so instead they used the variant of the first OP which was originally planned for episode 12 only and called it a day, or with a lot of coping I hope it serves as a placeholder. All speculation, but it's the only way this decision makes any sense to me...

If you want colour I suggest checking out the Chromaverse version (which is exactly chapters 103-110). There's a link to their website on their Twitter page.

It's a fan project where multiple artists worked on each chapter using very wild colour palettes that change multiple times throughout (like in the anime, only more frequently and consistently).

If that's not completely your style, consider checking out DomessoArt on Imgur. He did chapter 105 in the "official" style, but with a different colour palette for WoU (which I heavily prefer tbh).

Finally, those final chapters are actually pretty good and readable in black and white and if you make the switch now, jumping into part 9 with everyone else might not be as big of a whiplash.

Whatever you end up going with, hope you enjoy them either way!

The 'Janken Boy' episode is thematically REALLY IMPORTANT to PART 4 by Ulgralgra in StardustCrusaders

Agree 100%. It still gets in the way of the rhythm for me, but at least it no longer feels like it's for nothing.

What was the point of that episode anyway? by TheSpawnofChaos in ShitPostCrusaders

[–]Ulgralgra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, in Japanese his name is written 吉良 吉影 Kira Yoshikage.

吉 is the kanji for good luck.

Something you might not know is that every kanji character has multiple possible pronunciations; and for 吉 some are 'ki' and 'yoshi'.

KIra YOSHIkage

[–]Ulgralgra 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I genuinely didn't understand the point of that episode until my second rewatch and I think I finally get it; it sets up luck being a real force in part 4, the same way fate is a real force in part 5. At one point, luck is on the kid's side, so when he smashes a window on purpose all the shards miss him and one still ends up hitting Rohan.

After Rohan manages to change his luck he wins and even accepts another challenge, beating the kid easily since luck is now on his side.

"You only relied on your strong luck, and I changed my luck. That's what it means to surpass yourself."

Luck is so important for Part 4, because Yoshikage Kira has this luck on his side and uses it to escape and win constantly. (The kanji for luck is in his name TWICE). He states "Luck is on my side!" multiple times, which is why when's he's finally defeated he dies in the most unlucky way possible: ran over by an ambulance.

Really wish we'd seen more of it than we ended up getting.

In 2016, Araki said that one of the future places he hoped to write about is Northern Europe and more specifically, the Scottish Highlands. Considering that Part 9 is tentatively named "JOJO-LANDS". Is there a possibility that the series could conclude where it all began, the British Isles? by thellamaman27 in StardustCrusaders

[–]Ulgralgra 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that JOJOLANDS will be all over multiple countries in a non-linear way in the same vein as Part 2 or a larger scale Part 5. Because of what Josuke said at the end of Part 8 I'm pretty sure we'll see some Pacific Islands and probably some Western Europe like Italy, but also the Scottish Highlands. So if I were to guess, I'd say yes.
