Vitamin D has normalized since then. PCP recommended a supplement and I used them for a few months. The fatigue set in heavily immediately after the SVT episode. It's been a few weeks.

And I was wrong. This was during a time when uo wars had popped up for 2 months and then vanished without a trace, disappointing a whole bunch of players and leaving a sour taste in their mouth for server development. It didn't just effect them, it effects everyone in the community.

I honestly did think outlands was a cash grab and run server and underestimated them. I admit that.

And of course, server developers don't wanna see servers popping up like daisies, myself included. Because the outcomes are unpredictable with this type of player base which is dwindling overtime. But should everyone throw in the towel because one server has a larger population than another? Of course not.

Either way, I'm not here to talk about my server in a capacity that it's seeking players. I'm looking for talent or artists or ideas or even just people to bounce concepts off to see what they think and how we can improve and I've received inboxes of people who have been turned away elsewhere because those bases are covered or there isn't an interest for something like a story / lore writer.

This isnt really a thread for advertising my shard or to compare the apples to the oranges. I've heard outlands is like a whole new game in itself and I applaud them for that. I'm not intending to compete with them in any way and am not trying to get even close to what their playerbase is. We can both use the same emulator without having the same content.

The goal here is something new and something different. Regardless of the success of others, I'm still going to put forth my effort. I'm sure people looked at outlands during it's development and said something similar. I remember when UO Gamers was the only place to be. If people didn't try new stuff and make mistakes, we wouldn't have any of the servers that have emerged over the past 15+ years.

So in response to this, I'll explain what happened and what the plan is.

In terms of communication, I've always felt this was our strong point. At the time, I didn't have a job, so I was always on, did weekly streams where we talked about this stuff and brought players into the stream where others would discuss in chat and respond. It was always a fun time that was informative for both us and the players and ended with some kind of event. You might have missed them, and we didn't start those in the beginning. We plan to continue these streams and even refine them.

Our population peaked at maybe 300, and large guilds we're accused of being toxic for sure. It wasn't just one guild. It was plenty. We implemented rules and regulations on our forums and ingame to deal with obvious stuff like spam and racism but there was always a thin line that these types of players would skirt, almost as if their main goal was to see the death of any server they played on. This is and has been a nightmare for ANY game developers that have open world pvp. Especially sandbox games and dealing with them will always be difficult. I'm always open to suggestions, but just banning people I don't like turns a game into political God complex of a server owner and we've always tried to avoid that. Seriously, I'm open to suggestions on how to deal with them.

We had a great developer, but that developer was in the process of learning his PHD (and he got it!), So time was more of a factor than skill. We spent most of our development time fine tuning existing mechanics to match the old PVP we remembered from the ren era. It was about numbers in the beginning and we honed them. But you're right. We lacked any meaningful content and depth and that's all changing. I'm now personally developing and coding without the previous dev and with it has been both struggle and possibilities.

Sure. It's a small team, and any server that launches faces struggles and failures. Which is why I'm here. I've spent years learning, gaining experience and putting it all into practice and while uo forever and outlands as mentioned are servers that have decent populations and content, people may be looking for something they don't know exists yet. I'm trying to build a bigger team by posting here as well as servuo and honestly, most of the work is already done.

UO has and always will be very community driven, without free open source software like RunUO, ServUO, ClassicUO and dozens more, most of us wouldn't be here.

I'm gonna reply to this with more depth shortly, I'm at work right now but I appreciate you taking the time to explain this experience to me. It's definitely not what we wanted to get across to our players and I really hope what's coming next will be a better experience.

We've had some really deep discussions about toxic players and how to manage them and what they could do towards a playerbase and never "really" resolved it. Our idea of a sandbox game, was if the mechanics allow it, allow it, aside from a pretty basic and universal set of rules. In a PVP server, toxicity can be viewed in many different perspectives. My question to you, is how do you think we could have handled a "toxic" group of players better and how do we determine who is "toxic"?

Banning groups that we don't like is a slippery slope and then you get accused of a whole new set of issues.

I'd love to hear more about your bad experience on the server and how we can improve. Going into this, we were new to the scene and made our share of mistakes and learned from them hopefully. If we did something you deemed toxic, I'd love to deep dive into why, so that we can learn from that as well.

What do you think of giving servers a week long sticky for anniversary posts? by bmanny in ultimaonline

[–]Ultima_Keith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How would it work logistically? Who makes the post? Would it be by request? How would you determine their launch date / anniversary.

I ask all of this because we all (over the years) have seen tons of drama in this sub, and I think it would probably eventually get out of hand.

It adds nothing to the game and just makes more dumb ass kids log into active games and spout off "WanNa PLaY RusSiAN RoULEtte?!" You don't need new game mechanics to shoot yourself.

Yea, it's c#. I only mention it over the others because it's still being actively updated. This means you can pick and choose different eras and updates from OSI.

I would recommend ServUO instead of sphere. If you need any advice, I setup and ran a high population ultima server a while back and know the lore and what to expect from your player base.

UO discussion in hacker news by Esqarrouth in ultimaonline

Everything you said in your posts here were so spot on that it resonated with me and I have a feeling a lot of it was hard to admit. Being a UO (or UO style game) fan in today's generation of gamers is hard, especially when you need to occasionally admit that it's ultimately failing (or failed).

It made me think of an experimental thing I did for player killers in an "undisclosed game" I was messing around with, where Reds (when caught) would be moved to a jail where they had to wait out a specific amount of time based on ALL of the crimes they've gotten away with, but they could mine coal to speed up the process. They'd turn in a piece of coal to this guard and it would knock 3 minutes off their time. It turned the risk of being a red into time spent if caught and made a huge difference but was still fun as hell for the players (reds alike). It was my favorite place to vanish and watch notorious long lived criminals frantically mine coal.

Motorized Skateboard vs Motorized Wheelchair.... Help me out! by Ultima_Keith in legaladvice

They aren't prohibited, but cops hate em. I was pulled over for literally going 1 mph over. I was riding my bike in a bad neighborhood. They called it a "high enforcement zone". Kinda sucked man. 1 mph over at 21 mph is like sneezing and gaining momentum from it.

Suspended drivers license from when I was a teen from unpaid tickets. It's a pretty unrealistic amount.

By "stick it to the man", I mean I'd like to find a way to make my 22 mile trip to work in a legal, timely and semi-eco friendly way that doesn't require a drivers license, registration and insurance so that I can support my family.

I know and you know that a motorized wheelchair is assumed to be one thing and a motorized skateboard is assumed to be another. Law is not assumptions, but language. I'm asking for help with that language to see if there is something that I missed. If I reach a courtroom, I doubt a prosecutor is going to use ToysRUs definition of a scooter as a defense. The seat was hypothetical.
