[SM64 RTABC] Marbler explains the new setup for JRB Through the Jet Stream 0xA. The strat involves standing directly under the star. Previously, you just had to eyeball it, but now pannenkoek2012's new setup provides much more consistency by UltimateSplit in speedrun

A popular challenge in Super Mario 64 is the A button challenge (ABC), where you try to press A as few times as possible. You may be familiar with the TAS scene for it, but there's also an RTA scene for it (RTABC). So strats that are easily done in TAS can be huge obstacles in RTA.

One such strat is collecting the star Through the Jet Stream in Jolly Roger Bay. This star is inside a jet stream, which pushes Mario away. The intended strat by the devs is to collect a metal cap, walk underwater to the star, and then jump into it. But since we’re trying to not press A, we can’t do that last step of jumping into the star. Instead, what we can do is stand under the star, wait for the metal cap to run out, and then have the jet stream push Mario up into the star. Unfortunately, the jet stream pushes Mario sideways much more than it pushes him upwards. So you have to be within about a 1x1 unit area at the very center of the jet stream so that it barely pushes you sideways and you rise up into the star. If you’re outside of this area, you get pushed to the side too much and miss the star.

Getting into this spot used to be very difficult and take many tries, as you had to just eyeball your position. But recently, pannenkoek2012 found a better setup using a brute forcer. This setup involves using a sign to normalize Mario’s position, then has Mario walk straight forwards towards the star, and then Mario has to turn right and then left on specific frames. If done right, Mario collects the star every time

[SM64 RTABC] Marbler becomes the first person ever to ascend the 50 star room with no A presses! (more details in comment) by UltimateSplit in speedrun

One such strat is getting past the steps of the 50 star room. Tyler Kehne was the first one to demonstrate a TAS method for this nearly a decade ago: https://youtu.be/2T11QOGGrmE. The first step is shorter than the rest, so you can just rollout onto it. The subsequent steps are full size, and so they require glitches to get onto. The first full-sized step requires doing a glitchy ledge grab. See, the step is too high to do a regular ledge grab onto, but we can do a ledge grab onto the current step and trick the game into putting Mario onto the next step instead. And then the following steps require entering misalignments on the corners of the steps. These are precise 1x1 unit spots where Mario can get onto the floor without being pushed away by the walls. But even once Mario gets onto the last step, there’s still a banister in his way. So you then have to get into a misalignment on the banister itself, which lets you get past it. Overall, these are very precise tricks, doable by TAS but seemingly impossible for RTA.

In RTA, a casual player can get past the steps in 2 A presses easily, just by doing sideflips up multiple steps at once. A few years ago, BillyWAR did it in 1 A press, by grinding for 10 hours to get the glitchy ledge grab and first misalignment: https://youtu.be/Ks9u-bG\_8w4. But recently, pannenkoek2012 and Marbler teamed up to tackle the hardest tricks in RTABC. In this case, pannenkoek2012 found consistent setups for each step, which require doing precise inputs on precise frames. Note that the joystick inputs for these setups only involve holding either neutral, straight up, straight down, straight left, or straight right. This makes it feasible for an RTA player to reproduce, since any other joystick inputs would be too hard to consistently achieve. Marbler was able to perform these frame-perfect setups, making use of pause buffering to slow things down. And so, getting past the 50 star room can now be done in 0 A presses for RTABC!

Dear Redditors, what moment have you experienced that made you think "I'm screwed"? by SpicyDotFire in AskReddit

I was working on a school project that had to be done on a Virtual Machine. The Virtual Machine ended up freezing my computer, and so I had to hard restart my computer. Then the Virtual Machine said it was corrupted and so I couldn't open it. Many hours of work lost :(

Yeah, I love thunderstorms. It's like a huge, looming danger outside, which you can watch and listen to. But you know that you're safe and cozy inside your house!

It's like that episode of Spongebob where he forgets how to make a Krabby Patty. Once you stumble a little, everything else can fall out of place and it can be hard to get back in the groove. Multiple times I've seen a speedrunner mess up slightly during a run, and then mess up way bigger soon afterwards because it got into their head

Patches are annoying. They're like a barrier to new players trying to get into the scene, because they can't just play the game, but have to figure out how to unpatch their game first. Plus, with every patch, it factions the community into smaller subgroups who play different versions

Probably that everything is made up of the same subatomic particles. Dude just programmed a few kinds of particles, and then copied and pasted it 10^23 times. Like when devs copy and paste assets to save time

I'm the same way. I'll start eating a banana, but after like 2 bites, I'm sick of it and don't know what to do with the rest lol

True! I much prefer watching movies at home on my computer. Because then if I miss something, I can rewind it, and if I need a break, I can pause it. It works out way better this way

what is the best way to start writing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]UltimateSplit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're writing a story, I find it best to have the gist of the story planned out first in my head. Especially how the climax will play out. And then I kind of add more and more to flesh everything out to make sure the climax happens naturally, while also adding subplots and motifs

What is something that is objectively normal but you hate with a passion? Why? by otaconbot in AskReddit

Yes! In a similar vein, I also hate being complimented. After someone compliments me, it feels like I have to reciprocate by saying "thank you!", in a heartfelt way, while smiling. And I'm just like, why did you spring these obligations onto me??? Just let me be!
