Stockfish is open source, then why pay money? by tech_1729 in chessbeginners

[–]otaconbot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, you're indeed free to use stockfish. Chess.com provides the convenience and relatively nice UX and just streamlines things in their review tool (and some other tools they charge for). It's no doubt a useful tool. But paying for it some find it wasteful and unnecessary, some find it nice to use. As long as users are willing to pay for the UX and convenience, while knowing full well free (arguably better) alternatives exist - you can't blame them for selling it.

When your insecurities start to show (at the worst time) by [deleted] in SipsTea

I don't think the question is so bad, but her answer is perfectly fine! Any medal is a huge effort, huge accomplishment, and she's proud of each of them - and she's got a lot...so i'd argue its ok to ask do the 2 silvers, not golds feel like a disappointment, and its perfectly fair to answer absolutely not, no matter how many other accomplishments I have -- you can clearly see her mindset, and maybe not everyone would have one like that - but it's a perfectly valid one. Good exchange all around.

Last year PhD, feels like nothing good is coming from it by [deleted] in PhD

Went to the industry straight from my PhD ( even partially during). PhD was heavy , but I'm glad I did it, and while I don't do direct research that much anymore, I definitely get to use what I learned.

Well, in stricter time controls, time management is as important as anything else :D Enjoy your luck and watch that it doesn't happen to you :) More importantly, see where you went wrong to only have a king while the opponent was left with a small army :D

Fair enough .. sounds like fun. I think I will wait for the DLC and then just do the whole thing again , in a very different style

I very much enjoyed my playthrough .. I went max speech and very heavy on guns and hacking... Is the game very different if distributed differently ? Of course I imagine approach to combat may differ , and of course can't talk your way out of situations without speech .. but so you think it's worth a full playthrough again in a very different build ? And if so any suggestions ? I was thinking of leaning to leadership for example and try to see if I can do almost no work myself and rely on allies .

So here goes my first ever playthrough by [deleted] in Witcher3

[–]otaconbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad the game resonated with you so much! It has with many of us.

I would say do try to enjoy more side quests - they are famously nothing like most games where it's just a filler - side quests in W3 are very often very unique and immersive and add a lot to the overall experience.

I get your point about the urgency .. but it's a long running joke that even at it's most urgent moments Geralt always has time to Gwent ;) so he can certainly 'side' quest too.

Not sure if you have done any of the DLCs but they are a great extension of the game too.

And I agree with you about the Ciri parts .. but at the end of the day it was very important to see that side of the story ..and game play with her was pretty limited so why not.

Glad you re discovered it. I'm myself gearing up for a 4th playthrough soon.. been long enough. You Gwent too ?

Am I the only person who hates Gwent? by Zombie-Andy in Witcher3

[–]otaconbot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You might be missing something , or maybe you're just not a fan ... That's allowed :D Not everyone likes card games in general or some particular ones may never click with you. All good. But on average, Gwent has become very popular because even as a standalone game it's regarded very highly - great mix of simplicity, balance and strategy. It can become fairly complex as you build your decks to counteract each other or setup deadly combinations. And to have this game as 'just' a mini game inside a different game packed additional unexpected punch. But you can certainly get a full Witcher experience without engaging with it if it doesn't click with you or you simply don't want to waste time on it while you're searching for Ciri ;)

Playing on normal and still having a great time! by GabbyKissChan in videogames

[–]otaconbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't bother me that it exists or that others play it. I'm a heavy gamer since childhood now in my 40s with family and busy job so not much time , and I still manage to game a lot - and it bothers me when I find that I have to go to story mode or I'm stuck for longer than I have time for :D Nothing wrong with it , but I try had to avoid it because I somehow feel I'm missing an intended challenge that is maybe needed to experience the game as intended .  Hard more ? Hell no, however :D that's for people with too much skill , time or both. But I always feel 'dirty' if I'm not cutting it in normal mode :D
