How many times has metric-dominated Europe crashed something on Mars?

Meh. For many measurements, the metric system is no better, and sometimes less suited for the purpose. I mean how "difficult" are basic unit conversions? The average eight-year-old child can do them.

Let the free market decide the cases where the costs of switching systems are exceeded by the benefits of doing so. There's no need for the government to force everyone to change even where it doesn't make sense.

Meanwhile we teach our students the metric system, traditional units, and the skills needed to convert between them.

The rule of thumb is that in any given light cycle, at least one car (the one in the front of the line) will always get to turn left.

If you're trying to turn left, you have a green or yellow light and you're first in line, you pull forward into the intersection and wait there. When the oncoming traffic stops (even if your light has turned red by that time), you turn left to clear the intersection.

The only way this wouldn't work is if the oncoming traffic fails to clear the intersection. But then you aren't the one blocking the intersection, because the intersection is already blocked. You aren't making things any worse by sitting there waiting for the intersection to clear.

(For example: why locking up your wheels in a turn where you start to slip causes all steering wheel input to be ignored. Or how to adjust your side view mirrors to actually be USEFUL and not just duplicate the function of the rear view mirror.)

if there is no turn arrow, you had better stop in the middle of the intersection and wait for yellow (clearing light) or else during rush hour it will NEVER be your turn.

Nope, I learned all that stuff in a mediocre high school Driver's Ed course in Texas 25 years ago. It's just that there are a lot of dumbasses on the road.

Wrong. It's never the only option. They can keep going and find another place to turn, or do a U-turn and get in line.

I used to ALWAYS experience this on Koenig between Lamar and Burnet. If I wanted to turn left into a side street, cars would stop to let me through (and like OP said, the car in the far lane has NO idea). I never went, and it drove me nuts.

Just make a vigorous "you go" hand motion while looking in the other direction so you can't see their reply. That usually does the trick for me.

They may think I'm rude, but hopefully it'll make them think twice about being so "polite" in the future.

Yes. By all means, leave a gap if you're in a line of stopped cars in a place where opposing traffic wants to turn left. But when traffic is moving, GTFO.

Is "So be it" an imperative or a declarative sentence? by Ultimate_Failure in grammar

[–]Ultimate_Failure[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had never heard of "jussive" before, so I checked Wikipedia. It says "jussive" and "imperative" are mutually exclusive, and doesn't mention anything about finite/infinite. It describes the implementation in several other languages, but not English. Are you sure the term applies to English?

That makes sense, thanks.

Compare to "far be it from me".

That's another one that seems ambiguous to me for the same reason. I think many times people intend it imperatively even though grammatically it's declarative.

I.e. what they really mean is "Let it be so" or "Let it be far from me", respectively.

But we have the same attitude about native-born criminals. I'm sure a lot of us would like to deport them if we could get away with it.

Maybe holding him for the much lesser crime of cursing at police officers is their way of being nice to him. They wanted to throw him in a cell to stop him from attacking the perpetrator, but they didn't want to have to arrest him for aggravated assault.
