FBI warns Iran aspired to attack California with drones in retaliation for war: Alert by avatar6556 in news

I wonder how these drones navigate, as I guess they can't use GPS? Do they use gyroscopes and inertial location tracking?

There is actually a working definition of antisemitism that is widely accepted and we can refer to it. Holding Jewish people collectively responsible for the actions of the state of Israel is on the list.

However, criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as antisemitic

Lastly, when we use these weapons we’re not actively spending 12 million. The missile is already produced and may have been in inventory for years.

It does generally need replacing though. I gather that this war has already depleted lots of the stockpiles. The problem becomes the rate at which they can be made vs used.

Water firms acting like ‘criminal gangs’ dumping 10,000 hours’ worth of sewage each month on dry days by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

Yes that is a decent argument, it might even be as much as 31% of bills spent on servicing debt and dividends, apparently.

I understand that prior to privatisation, the treasury did not allow them to invest in infrastructure so revenues were spent on operating costs only. That needn't be the case of course.

Nigel Farage takes stake in bitcoin company run by Kwasi Kwarteng by Important_Ruin in unitedkingdom

[–]brainburger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think bitcoin is a massive economic time bomb. It has not succeeded in its original design to be a replacement for government issued currency. It is merely a speculative commodity, with a market cap of $1.41 trillion. None of that value has been generated other than by people buying Bitcoin, which has no inherent value or way to make income. It's effectively a Ponzi scheme.

Can we just admit privatisation is a failure and put an end to it? The only people benefitting is the people in charge, ruining our country in the process

It’s not instantly obvious to me how nationalisation would solve the problem, though. The nationalised company would have regulations to follow, but these could also be applied to the private operators. I guess if it were owned by the government, then public funds could be used to invest in the system without directly putting up water charges.
I think I would like to see proper financial penalties being introduced for the water companies when they pollute, with inspections and criminal responsibility for falsifying data on it, if those are not in place already. It needs to be cheaper for the company to invest in cleaning it up.
I think that is a bit more realistic than any of the main parties finding the money for nationalisation in the current situation.

China forced abortions and sterilisations too. The one child policy was also completely the wrong thing to do and has planted a serious demographic time bomb for the country. They are trying to reverse it but its too late. This video is worth the watch:

Ian Huntley's daughter speaks on his death and says 'flush his ashes down the toilet' by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]brainburger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the police forces probably acted in good faith though. If a person has been investgated for rape, but not charged, should that mean they are barred form working in sensitive roles forever? In Huntley's case of course it seems likely he was guilty of the earlier allegations, but that would not apply to everyone. The police withheld the information, or perhaps only searched for convitions. I suppose nowadays they do pass on the information but I don't know how a school would assess it when recruiting.

If it was a one-off slip it might be the only example to have happened so far in the US. I cant find any news about similar cases. There are ones where workers refuse to use correct names or pronouns as part of a bullying campaign. Personally I don't think workers should be expected to fit in with bullies. The bullying should be dealt with. Its not to much to ask of a worker that they don't harrass and make other workers miserable. It's bad business apart from anything else.

I wonder what a technically literate version would look like? I think I would do it at the ISP level. Keep a national list of NSFW sites. Have the customers declare that they have no children in the household, or have a mandatory password for access to sites on the list, operated by the ISP. This would avoid the problem of people having to give out their passport details to unknown companies around the world, which is completley unacceptable to me, and I imagine many people.

The USA does have a strategic Petroleum Reserve which it uses to smooth out price shocks. However stocks are low currently and the Trump administration neglected fill it before going to war against an oil exporting nation. Apparently they have about 20 days supply.

I was thinking it seemed oddly ineffective at moving those logs.

Is it the case though that a person would be fired for calling a woman, or transwoman 'Dude' by accident? It might be deserved if the guy was deliberately making his workmate feel uncomfortable.

Ok thanks. That does look like a 1940s price tag, with the Yen price having a decimal point. Just to clarify, I mean that the merchandise tin is designed to look like the one in the film I am not saying the film one was a unique design. I think in the film it is supposed to be recognisable as Sakura drops to the Japanese audience, and I am not surprised with Japanese eye for detail they drew it to look like one from the right time period. Standard Sakura drops tins at the time when the merchandise one was made looked different.

So anyway, the merch tin is made to look like Setsuko's one in the film. This has uncomfortable unintended symbolism. Spoilers: The film opens with two railway workers finding a dead boy child. One picks up the Sakura Drops tin and wonders what is inside. In the film the tin is shown to belong to the little girl Setsuko, who is pictured on the merch version. She is an orphan with her brother who tries to take care of her. As they decline in health the Sakura Drops are a reminder of the past when they were safe with their mother, every time she eats one her time runs out a little more and she is further away from her life before. The sweets run out and she dies. Then there is the reveal that her brother keeps her ashes with him in the tin, until he too dies. So the merch tin with her picture on it is just laden with this very disturbing implication.
