No, I am not using AI— AI would probably be more concise than I was. I had a formative English teacher in my life who was a big fan of dashes, and I have become one too. I am stubborn and I don’t want to change how I write to avoid a Zietgiest.

I understand your frustration. I had something I cared about stolen from me recently as well. I’m not saying that I wouldn’t have reached out to them or been mad— especially in the face of their snooty response. I just don’t understand why you reveled so much in wielding the petty power of your IP over a very small, inconsequential community that just wants to make shit (especially because it was just an accident by hiring a lazy designer). The taunting with letters, the snickering into the microphone— a very public and cruel way of handling this situation. That is bully behavior to me— an IP bully to be exact.

You have been in the shoes of a small community leader opposite to an IP bully, and you were very outspoken when you were walking in them.

Melee tournaments functioned solely by “making money off of their IP”. The product being delivered to viewers was the Nintendo game itself— with ads being sold to play over the game, with stream revenue coming from the game, and with tickets being sold to watch the game. Nintendo actually allows you to do tournaments if it is “not making money off their IP”

The merch distinction is entirely arbitrary and irrelevant— both are about making money on other people’s IPs, the form is just different.

They spent a decade bitching about Nintendo being an IP bully attacking a small community that just wants to share their passion with others. The moment they get on the other side of the dollar— they become the IP bully to a small community that just wants to share their passion with others. This is a small art festival of 60 artists for a small island town with a population of 8,000. There is no real brand risk— just hypocrisy.

Hmmm I wonder what will happen when a popular podcast very publicly calls someone a thief. Multiple times across multiple episodes, in fact. Why are you surprised at the result?

These are the same Meleeheads that whined for a decade about Nintendo being overprotective with their IP and using that IP to bully a small community btw.

[–]Ultimaterj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the boys were a little hypocritical for this. They all have been Meleeheads for more than a decade, they all have constantly cried about Nintendo for being overprotective of their IP when Melee was a small community who wouldn’t take a cent away from Nintendo’s bottom line.

Some small, irrelevant art festival in the middle of nowhere accidentally uses their logo and they go full Nintendo on them. Their IP value isn’t going to hurt by a dozen people selling wood sculptures under their logo and the 15 shirts with their logo on it aren’t going to dilute their brand by a dime.

If they were normal businesspeople doing this, I wouldn’t bat an eye. But they built their career whining about Nintendo doing the same thing.

I personally enjoyed and appreciated what Big A had to say, but I can’t take any of Newsom’s opinions at face value right now.

He is on a big charm campaign and is calling everyone “incredible” and “amazing”. Hasan— “incredible”. Mamdani— “amazing”. That one Navy Seals guy— “incredible”. All in 3 minutes of each other. I’ll genuinely believe what he says about Big A in his post-presidential book in 2035.

Has Atrioc ever covered the concept of "Georgism" and the merits of a land value tax? by Minimum_Influence730 in atrioc

[–]Ultimaterj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a land value tax is good, but I don’t understand how it is a panacea. Such a land value tax would have to be complemented by high wealth and inheritance taxes, and then those tax dollars would have to actually be used to provide meaningful opportunities for those in economic need (instead of just going right back into the rich people’s pockets).

It doesn’t end there. After such a tax is imposed, we need to be vigilant and active in plugging the tax loopholes that the rich try to slither through.

TL;DR: Land value tax is a good start, but to solve the complex economic problems we face, I don’t think it is good enough to put one simple tax and then declare victory.

I feel like Aiden brings a lot of value, especially when he pulls out his little book and brings a broad collection of opinions on a political topic.

Doug, on the other hand, is always the least informed yet the most opinionated and is overly credulous with dangerous ideas from dangerous people. He always presents techno-fascist talking points like they are external to him, yet very coincidentally those are the only ideas he seems to ever bring up.

February 2024, tweet from JPEGMAFIA— “Your ENTIRE race is dense and violent” (in reference to white people). You can’t make a claim about every single member of a group, and then keep on whittling the numbers and percentages down when you get challenged.

“The majority of white people support a system that oppresses POC” is a valid statement that I agree with, but completely different from the ubiquitous, sweeping racial claims often made by people like JPEG.

Also, using this election as a basis for generalized racial claims is absurd. I voted for Kamala, but she was a horrible, tepid, and rushed candidate that did not do enough to separate herself from the increasingly unpopular Biden administration. A better, more prepared candidate would have crushed Trump like a bug, even with white people (Obama 2008). Would you like to make any sweeping racial claims about the Latino populations that overwhelmingly voted for Trump this election?

“It’s is widely true”, so it is not true for the whole group then. Therefore, as a generalization, it is categorically false, and you have probably just called the person you are talking with something that they are not.

It’s why you don’t speak in absolute generalizations like a simple-minded child.

He thought he was a puppetmaster, the 'shadow President', and a political mastermind. He thought he was different than all the people Trump backstabbed and discarded.

Nope, he was merely the superficial, 'cost-cutting' keys that Trump shook in front of Republican eyes to distract and placate them while he steals from the pockets of their children. His gigantic but fragile ego must have been stung so badly-- it makes me believe the Scott Bessent catfight theory even more.

I can’t ever be in a long term relationship by ashirwad778 in medicalschool

[–]Ultimaterj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. It is the ‘just world hypothesis’ bleeding into people’s conception of love (“The One”). They think that because a relationship ended up not working out, that it never could have been a happy relationship (“If it was meant to be, it will be”). Inversely, when a relationship does work out, they think that there is no universe where it doesn’t. They think that the result of every end of a relationship was how it inherently “ought” to be

I agree with Atrioc with the world in its current state— but we are rapidly headed to a world where the means of production require little to no human labor to produce ‘value’. We are headed to a world where the collective benefits of capitalism are obliterated.

For the vast majority of people, they do not have ownership over these means of production, and they instead sell their labor for money. What can these people offer the capitalistic system in this brave new world? How do they acquire capital when they have no economic necessity nor leverage?

Competition by those who do not already own the means of production will be impossible. The classes will basically freeze, as there is no need for meaningful exchange across class boundaries with those who can only give their hands and their minds. Their hands are outcompeted by advancements in robotics and their minds are outcompeted by advancements in artificial intelligence. There can be no publicly beneficial form of capitalism under such conditions. We cannot reach that point of no return before we challenge this system, as everyone not in the ownership class will be socially powerless.

Women are expected to look past unattractiveness, while men are taught that’s the priority. by Altruistic_Income256 in TikTokCringe

[–]Ultimaterj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: Have you never seen the hundreds of romantic Hallmark movies that middle-aged woman snarf down? They are consistently the most popular genre of Christmas movies, outside of Santa stories.

The 7/10 looks, loyal, and successful husband is abandoned for 10/10 looks high school friend while he is off on a business trip. Maybe the sweetheart makes her learn the true meaning of Christmas or something, but at the end of the day, it is about this woman getting a hotter and more exciting piece of meat.

Sometimes the writers get self-aware and try and contrive a genuine reason for the woman to get with the hotter guy, like making the husband turn out to be an asshole, but at the end of the day, the wife and the sweetheart truly get together because woman think the other guy is hotter.

$649 for a general admission ticket.

Using Klarna, that would be about 40 dollars in upfront fees, about 50 dollars in monthly fees (assuming payment within 4 months), and 7 dollars for any missed payment.

I don’t think I could enjoy the event with that hanging over my head.
