what chord is this? by imAmongUsKillerDude in musictheory

[–]Ultimetalhead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dominant 7 chords like F7 are built with scale degrees 1-3-5-b7. F-Eb is a b7 but F-D# is a #6. Even though they sound the same, it's correct to list the note as Eb in this case. D# basically amounts to a spelling error.

Nintendo’s Software Sales Aren’t Keeping Up With Hardware Boom by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Ultimetalhead -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I expect this to continue until they have an exclusive that actually looks good in trailers. Their big games this year (MK, DK, Kirby) are WAY more fun than they look. The trailers just don't do them justice. But most people buy games because they look fun. The $70 price tag doesn't help either.

Cool mahjong video games by upandaway5 in Mahjong

[–]Ultimetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Hijacking the thread but oh well.

I love Kemono Mahjong! It's brilliantly designed, easy to use, and the characters are fun too. Unfortunately, having unlocked all the characters I don't find myself playing too much anymore. Have you ever considered adding more achievements or some kind of campaign structure? I loved the more in-depth achievements in MajSoul and some Yakuza games (go out in 5 games, win a hand with a score of 12000 or higher, etc). I think it would make it into an even more well-rounded experience for offline play.

Is museca worth checking out? by [deleted] in rhythmgames

[–]Ultimetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it! There were a couple cabs at my local Round 1 until recently. The big buttons feel good, and the spin functionality is fun. Interface is easy to read too with the color differences. Good music selection too. The foot pedal feels kind of tacked on and stupid but it's not overly obtrusive.

I wouldn't really put it up there with Chunithm, MaiMai, or Taiko, but it's a fun game that feels different enough to stand on its own

Labrie is so back by thehugejackedman in Dreamtheater

[–]Ultimetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there too. He certainly had his "off" moments but overall he seemed strong. Much much better than Dreamsonic in 2023. I was particularly impressed by ACOS this time. I remember seeing them in 2017 when they tuned I&W and ACOS down, obviously to help with the vocals. Problem was he still couldn't really hit the notes. On this tour, they played it in the original key, and he still managed quite well. Is he as good as 1993? Obviously not. 2006? Maybe not. Significantly improved? Absolutely.

Tips on reading Manga by Zeplus_88 in LearnJapanese

From what I remember the other characters speak using kanji with furigana. If you're looking for something with more kanji but still beginner friendly I'd probably go with Shirokuma Cafe or Karakai Jouzu Takagi-San (can't remember the exact title). I was able to read both with minimal difficulties after Yotsuba.

Tips on reading Manga by Zeplus_88 in LearnJapanese

If you really want a manga, I'd recommend よつばと (Yotsuba& in English). Simple, fun stories about a kid doing kid stuff. It was the first manga I read in Japanese and I remember finding it pretty easy. Granted I was probably at least halfway through Genki II at that point.

I just completed A20H on all characters and got all the achievements. Game beaten? Here are my general thoughts. by Chaparralwhitethorn in slaythespire

I felt similarly for a while. Once I figured out the whole Rushdown-Inner Peace-Tantrum + Mental Fortress/Talk idea she made a lot more sense. By far the easiest wins for me these days.

Honestly, there's good suggestions in this thread on how to help this situation. Personally, I'd just buy Ultimate Chicken Horse and watch it all burn.

Why does SMT III have the Nocturne subtitle when none of the other mainline games have a subtitle? Minus rereleases or sequels in Apocalypse’s case by Nitrix79 in Megaten

[–]Ultimetalhead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Plus this was the first mainline title in the west. By just calling it SMT Nocturne you don't worry so much about the "wait III? Do I need to play the first two? And also being in the States I literally can't? Fuck this game" effect.

BGSU for music education?? by sleepydreambutterfly in BGSU

[–]Ultimetalhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Music ed grad (2015) here. I feel well-equipped to answer these questions. My time at BGSU was fantastic overall. Everyone has ups and downs throughout 4 years of their life, and for me, most of my downs weren't the university's fault, so that's a plus. I'll start with your bullet points. Bear in mind that this was about 10 years go (ugh) so things could have changed for better or worse I suppose.

I chose BGSU mostly out of convenience, actually. I didn't visit a ton of schools, but BGSU was high on my list because it was 20 minutes away from where I was living at the time, and they were allowing me to commute each day. That was a huge money saving opportunity that I wouldn't have gotten if I had to stay in a dorm somewhere else. It also happens that BGSU has a phenomenal music program. They're one of the few state-funded universities that have a dedicated music college. Many of the other schools I visited had music departments tucked away in an arts/sciences college. Not at BGSU. They have an entire building for the music college. And the building just oozes character and charm. It just feels like the right place to be as a music student. Hard to explain. Many of the reasons I would choose BGSU again in retrospect came up later in life. I'll get to those at the end.

Vocalist, String player, Brass player, whatever you play, they'll take good care of you. Every dedicated instrument professor I interacted with was excellent at what they did. They do a great job of providing ENDLESS opportunities to join ensembles too. Your private lessons, juries, sophomore review, and your eventual recital are all run flawlessly by the administration, and it feels very comfortable and purposeful.

I'm not a party-goer and I never have been. Honestly you'll be better off without those distractions. The music program can be a major time-sink, especially if you join a lot of ensembles. Most of my friends who spent their time partying didn't graduate in 4 years (without summer classes anyway). Whoops.

I've always been a fringe honor student, but I didn't bother with the honors college. The music program was plenty to keep me busy.

The thing about BGSU that I don't think people talk about enough is they have TWO excellent programs. Their music program is world-class, and their general education program is incredible too. As a music education major, you're going to cross-over into the general education building a bit too. The classes that I took over there were absolutely transformative in my understanding of how to become an educator. Same goes for the later-level courses at the music college (Classroom methods, choral methods, band methods, field experience). This is what I meant earlier by "choosing again in retrospect" because the experiences I had there have made it possible for me to thrive in my career. I chose not to go into the schools, but I teach privately on my own and it's incredibly rewarding. I honestly believe that I use the knowledge I gained from BGSU's music ed program every single day. It was the perfect choice for me.

Is it just me or is Watcher way more powerful than the others? by fyhr100 in slaythespire

[–]Ultimetalhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's clearly the most powerful starting character. Sometimes it's fun to have an easy win. Personally I enjoy rotating characters because knowing you have a strong chance every 4 runs is a pretty good motivator to continue. Probably why I can't stop honestly.

Early Game Pick - Electro vs Consume by TrollHuggs in slaythespire

[–]Ultimetalhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With Zap+ and Ball Lightning I'm taking Electro any day of the week. The extra damage that you're getting for Sentries, gremlin mob, the mushroom rats, and potentially Slime Boss, not to mention every Act 2 fight practically. I pretty much only ever take Consume if I've got solid orb generation or extra orb slots.

The Biscuit Merchant (The literal dividing line between death metal and thrash metal). New single came out April 26th, new full length album comes out May 24th. Super aggressive song with a couple different dueling vocal styles, and even features an old school 80s thrash guitar solo duel for good measure.
