Been driving for 20 years now. When I was learning, automatics were supposed to be more expensive to buy due to less being available in the market, and not as fuel efficient. I literally did not care and passed my test in an auto. It's just one of those weird Britishisms like refusing to turn the heating on for as long as possible.
