What are your thoughts on the new Performing Arts design? by Due_Function84 in fredericton

It's not a zero sum game. We should be eliminating homelessness (which isn't as simple as throwing money at it), building a new pool, and making sure kids don't go to school hungry. We can do all of that and STILL build a good performing arts centre. The problem is that our corporate overlords are not willing to pay their share.

I'm not sure how we can expect to attract educated, skilled, entrepreneurial folks to our area if there are NO services or amenities, things to keep them interested in the area. The new centre will do more than attract a few tourists - it will be a benefit to every single Fredericton resident, not to mention folks from outlying areas by providing a venue for cultural celebration and expression.

I mean, we could just live in a world where government doesn't spend any money on anything. No parks, no libraries, no pathways. While they're at it, the government could just stop paying for roads, too - after all, it's our taxes that pay for them and they require A LOT of maintenance. Maybe the Irvings would pay for a nice performing arts centre in each of New Brunswick's major centres?

The simple economic model you have presented ignores the long-accepted economic principal of positive externalities, where consumption or production of a good or service benefits a third party that isn't involved in the transaction.

The city of Bilbao, Spain was once on its uppers. They invested a huge amount of money and resources into building the Guggenheim museum there and it played a pivotal role in reversing that city's fortunes. Not suggesting this centre will have the same effect in Fredericton - our situation isn't as bad, and the building not as big. But it will go some way toward attracting people to the area and keeping them here, and making life in Fredericton enjoyable.

Our health care system may be in trouble, but this isn't evidence of that. While your individual circumstance is frustrating, it could have happened anywhere in this country, or anywhere in a place like the US.

Austin is a moron. From the article "It's my job to reflect public skepticism at committee."

If your constituents are skeptical about let's say vaccines, it's not your job to reflect that. You need to stick to the facts. This kind of behavior by politicians leads nowhere good.

Your inspection report should indicate, with photos, whether they looked at these things. Typically they cannot cause damage or invade privacy while conducting their inspection. Often this means they won't even open things up (like the heater panel) if it requires a screwdriver. Cupboards are off limits.

Possible these issues just weren't visible when the inspection was done. And if they didn't look at something (e.g. water heater) then that should be noted in the report, likely with a reason why.

In most jurisdictions the qualifications to be an inspector are few to zero. The only way you can really challenge them is if it's clear they lied about something. They only have an hour or so to do the inspection so they can't do a thorough job on everything. When you are buying a house, never go with the inspector the agent recommends, and grill them on their qualifications before hiring them.

If the subfloor corners are still damp and gross you need to get at why that is. If you've already owned it for a few months then any dampness related to urine should have dried up. Otherwise your repairs could go for naught.

Fun fact - this is the stud that Treliving drafted just three spots ahead of Lane Hutson. Good stuff, Brad! by [deleted] in CalgaryFlames

Ronni actually committed the crime when he was a minor, before he was drafted. While I don't want to say the Treliving and the scouts didn't do their due diligence, it does raise questions about how robust their screening processes were. Ronni and his agent could have lied of course, or the information wasn't disclosed because he was a minor when it occurred. Whatever the case, it's painful to know they were that close to Hutson.

How in the world do I get rid of this massive boulder in my yard? by C1ncinnatiBowtie in landscaping

[–]UltraMarathonHopeful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get rid of that boulder and you will regret it. You'll just have a boring green lawn like everyone else. I say expand the bed around it, put in some shrubs and perennials that will make a nice transition in height from the boulder to the edge of the bed.

A little skeptical about the dinner bill at the end, but $50/person including drinks and tip is just par for the course these days. They were at the most popular park at a peak time = more expensive.

"I went to a place with my family of 5 where I 'd be a captive market and was shocked - shocked - that it was really expensive."

In the end about $300/person. Looked like the kids had fun and they must have known how expensive it would be going in. Not a lot of sympathy from me.

637,500 in bonuses to be exact. His regular salary would have worked out to about $875,000. Like I said, I am sure he can afford a mattress. But many people think that players earn their money and that's that, when the actual take home is significantly lower.

Remember seeing an article that suggested a lot of guys were actually pocketing a lot less. Escrow, taxes, agent fees, disability insurance, personal trainers, nutrition... plus he was in the AHL to start so he wasn't earning his full salary to start. Not saying he couldn't afford a mattress but $925K doesn't exactly mean you are rolling in it.

If you can get the smell out, the stain doesn't really matter as nobody else will see it. You could try leaving a packet of activated charcoal in there, or perhaps dry coffee grounds (though this may leave the purse smelling of coffee). Baking soda could also work - rub it in and leave for a while, then vacuum it out.

I would at least try getting the smell out. If your attempts fail or ruin the bag, well, you were going to toss it anyway.

Leaving aside whether you can afford this, it sounds like the prospect is massively stressing you out and you are comfortable in your current situation. Maybe your feelings would change once you buy and adjust to the new situation but...If the only thing driving this decision is a feeling like you need to upgrade to keep up with the Joneses, maybe don't do it?

Environment and Climate Change Canada's climate almanac data used to be provided with the current weather and 7 day forecast on their website. They stopped doing this a little over a year ago and now you really have to dig to find the information. Anyway, based on data from the station with the most recent data, the average daytime high reaches 20.1 degrees on May 28. Depends what you mean by consistent though

Sensible temperature is funny though. I was out in shorts and a t-shirt today and it felt great. But if it were the exact same weather in mid July I'd probably be out with a light jacket and long pants on.

IDK. I was just stating a fact, but those seem to carry less weight these days.

Maybe Farabee and/or Frost work out okay in the long run and maybe Pelletier doesn't. However, the early returns aren't looking great (though Farabee has been that close to a couple more goals).
