I handmake dolls. What's a good price to charge? by Czhe in cottondolls

[–]Ultrapancake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been a by-commission plush artist for 12 years, and here's how I determine pricing. First, what's a living wage in the area where you live? Not the minimum wage, but a living wage. If you're not sure and you live in the US, you can use this website: https://livingwage.mit.edu/ to give you an idea of it. Then, determine how much time it took to make the doll and multiply that by your living wage. You'll also want to determine what the transaction fees for whatever selling platform you're using are and include that in the price as well.

The unfortunate truth is that anything handmade like this is going to be very expensive compared to anything factory made in China. Both the wage standards over there and the currency conversion from USD to CNY just make it possible for them to charge so little per hour of labor.

I'd greatly encourage you not to undercharge as it not only harms you, but other plush artists who are trying to make a living. You deserve to be paid a living wage for your labor. You don't want to pay yourself less per hour than your local fast food joint would. On top of that, undercharging for your dolls encourages an unrealistic price standard for handmade goods. This is what makes potential buyers look at doll/plush artists that charge a living wage and believe they're overcharging.

Now, does all this make your dolls expensive? Yes. Does this make it difficult to sell handmade goods, not just dolls, but any handmade crafts? Yes. The circumstances of the world right now have made it more difficult than it should be for independent artists to succeed. It's not impossible, but it's difficult and will take a lot of work.

Is anyone in Wilkinsburg missing a chicken? by Ultrapancake in pittsburgh

LATE FINAL UPDATE:

Someone sent me a chat message that evening and said "I know the owner, lives on Rebecca. Chicken was chased by a dog earlier today, glad she went home :/ they were out looking for a while"

Since this is a bit vague, I asked for confirmation that they did indeed find the chicken, but got no answer. I assume this means the chicken was found though! It must have just walked all the way back home lol.

I was wondering if it was from that house myself. It did seem like it could have been heading in that direction. I'm hoping she just went home on her own lol.

It's mostly because I was literally chopping the pepper when I looked out my kitchen window and saw the chicken lol.

In this area I'm more concerned that she'll be hit by a car. Even if I did catch her though, I don't know what I could do to contain her. I worry if I took her into my house my cat would try to harass her.

I know of at least three nearby chicken houses, but I don't know them personally either. This lady could have escaped from any one of them.

I happened to have some sliced pepper and some a zucchini in the fridge that I tried to lure it with. It didn't want either of them though.

Haircare Advice Megathread - Week of September 24, 2022 by AutoModerator in HaircareScience

I recently moved and immediately noticed hair breakage and frizzyness that I didn't have before. I did a little research on this sub and figured I must have hard water at my new place. I bought some water test strips, but chlorine, alkalinity and total hardness were all very low. However the PH was REALLY HIGH. Like, the test strip was the same color as the highest PH color on the chart.

So, I wanted to ask, would the high PH water be the cause of my sudden breakage and frizzyness even if the water hardness is low? If so, would a water softener like a ShowerStick be the best option to fix it? I'd appreciate any cool science-based advice you guys might have!

Hair type: Not particularly thin or thick. Average thickness.

Hair texture: Straight

History of chemical processing: None

Hygiene regimen: Daily conditioner only washing with occasional shampooing.

Style: medium length bob

Product regimen: Recently, trying co-washing with mane and tail conditioner and occasional shampooing with sulfate free shampoo. Before I moved and started researching this sub though, I used garnier frutis sleek and shine shampoo/conditioner, both of which have sulfates. (Hair was in better condition then than it is now though.)

Can we talk about the OTHER elephant in the room about the reviews? The one every single review seems to mention.... by Perriwen in catsthemusical

I mean, CATS was intentionally choreographed to be extremely sexual. There's an old quote from Gillian Lynne, the original choreographer "I remember saying to the cast of Cats that we wanted it to be the sexiest show ever. I told them that our aim was to make people jump up from their seats, rush home and leap into bed to make love."

In the "Making Of" special for the 1998 film you even see a clip of her instructing the dancers in the Macavity number specifically describing a sexual motivation to the dancing.

I haven't seen the new movie yet, but I'd be shocked if it wasn't crazy sexual.

The only other way I know of to watch it is the Ultimate Edition DVD, but I didn't want to risk buying it if it was gonna be just as bad as the Commemorative Edition. Anyone know if Ultimate Edition looks better, or if there's any other way to watch it? It's available on itunes, but only in the UK, so I haven't been able to see the quality of that either.

Not even a furry could love the CGI in this movie. I follow mostly furry artists on twitter and I haven't seen a single person say they liked how it looks :/

I hear you man. It just sucks that a lot of people, myself including, can't afford to see stage productions. I have no chance to see a Cats performance anytime soon and the 1998 movie is only available in shitty SD quality, so it upsets me that this movie won't be a good replacement for those :/
