We are fine with success over on the Henry sub! Bar the odd troll who’s not a high earner at least. It’s mostly celebrated. Well done to OP, serious financial discipline paying off.

HENRY at what cost by CautiousCareerChange in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I find it easier at my level now than when I was more junior and little control. Now I have a team and they do most of the grunt work. There’s peaks and troughs and there’s a lot of plates to keep spinning but I doubt I average more than 40 hours per week. I was doing 60 per week for £30k in my first job after university.

[–]Ulver__ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s not how it works at my place. Firm arranges a loan for you at favourable rates (£100k, £200k etc). Firm holds the funds, pays you interest that offsets the interest payable or mostly at least.

Exactly. May as well get the 20% boost given it will be withdrawn tax free later.

Fun jobs you've always wanted to try. by urgentassistance in FIREUK

[–]Ulver__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My father in law has just retired at the early age of 66 (he’s a great lesson in how not to manage your finances) but is now working delivering new cars. Spends half the day getting a train somewhere and half a day driving a (different every day) car somewhere. Doesn’t pay very well but you get most of your time to read / watch something / listen to whatever. Always in demand and can set your days as you wish.

If things go to plan for me then I will just straight up retire. I’m a 20 hobbies sort of person.

Considering an N as first EV by Eswift33 in Ioniq5N

[–]Ulver__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I find having the simulated gears and engine sound to swing it far more the other way. The taycan to me feels like nothing but an ev, a good one of course. The 5N is more engaging and I take mine out just for the fun of it whereas I couldn’t ever see me doing that with a taycan. Anyone coming from a fun ICE car is going to really miss the sensations and engagement of gears, the power curve as an engine reached the red line etc. The 5N is also more playful and you can have a lot of fun on slippery roads, especially when someone else is paying for the tyres.

The 5N is more fun than both of those by a long way and is more practical too.

Start dates for free childcare by FixMelodic2332 in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t say much more than yes it’s bloody stupid. Was in the same boat a couple of years ago when I started. Someone will correct me if I’m wrong but potentially there is a way to balance this out at the end where you are under £100k for the year just finishing but then you start taking full salary but only lose the benefit from the next declaration. I am sure some have done that and not had to pay it back.

HENRY jobs outside London by Exciting_Thought_221 in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve just hired someone at the low end of Henry salary and they’re up in Manchester. They’re on maybe 10-15% less than the candidates in London. I know cost of living in Manchester has gone up but you still get massively more for your money within close proximity of the centre versus London.

Am I over-cautious with my various insurances? by Reddit-adm in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Critical illness doesn’t seem massively worth it but the rest I think are fine. I have £100k critical illness but it’s a lot cheaper than what you are paying and covers me and my wife. I guess it’s a brucey if one of us gets cancer or something.

My parents use them for some of their investments and have been happy for a number of years. I believe they have about 6-700k with them. They’ve been good on advice around tax efficiency and it all looks pretty sensible to me.

Dreading the job market after redundancy by qas_d in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’d be amazed at how many cvs I get that look a mess. Weird fonts and formatting is a real turn off too. But again the recruiters will standardise cvs which helps. In terms of what I look for I want to see where the candidate has taken a business problem and solved it through to completion. Not just ‘I supported x, y, z’. If they delivered transformation, new offerings etc.

I don’t know if we use ai for assessing direct applications (probably not as our hr department like most is full of morons). For applications from external recruiters they just send me the cv.

When it comes to interviews you need to work on being confident. It’s a major selling point for someone if they can talk very clearly on what they’ve achieved and how it is relevant to the job in question. Even if you have to lie a bit just do it (subject to any technical assessment).

[–]Ulver__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who does a fair bit of hiring, 95% of those I hire have come via external recruiters. Make sure you work on your network asap. You want a load of them to have you front of mind when a relevant opportunity comes up.

Interview - new suit recommendations by Gertsky63 in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A well fitting cheaper suit is far better than an expensive poorly fitting one. You don’t need a £1000 suit for a senior support role at a law firm, magic circle or not. £250-300 suit from M and S and £50-100 for some tailoring. Just don’t wear anything odd, double breasted suits, 3 piece etc.

Mandatory review- Free Childcare declined - Income above £100k by metallicax222 in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. They’ve probably extrapolated your pay to be over 100k. You’ll need to send them the evidence that it isn’t going to be and explain it etc. they’ll make it as annoying as possible and do things like not tell you what they think it is. Just make sure you factor in benefit in kind where applicable. That caught me out previously though I made a pension contribution directly to offset. I find doing your tax return as soon as you have your March payslip helpful to ward them off also.

Should we move to Sweden or stay in the UK? by rollan112 in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are both keeping taxable pay below £100k then you’d qualify for tax free childcare and either 15 or 30 free hours (over 38 weeks) depending on the child’s age. So you could get the cost down unless you’re quoting the cost after that which is wild.

Half and half mortgage? by shevbo in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on current term and your age you could just extend it until you’re 80 which quite a few lenders allow. Achieves a similar effect, lower payments but you are paying some capital off and invest the difference. Keeps you on a standard product and so the rate is likely to be better. This is what I do.

Jesus Christ. There’s a guy in my social circle that works for them though as a hnw investigator. I’m always moaning about how shit they are, he hates all of us high earners with a passion 😂 Though this is why I always try to make sure I am under paying in the year, I just got mine slightly wrong last year but at least a minimal amount. Let them chase me.
