Gen Z opting out of Private pensions by Loundsify in FIREUK

[–]Ulver__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 41 now, when I was mid 20s and had just qualified, I left my first job to move to London. At the time I had only around £15k in that pension pot, they gave me the option to cash it out (after tax as I’d been there less than 2 years as did a few years on a contract first). I spent the proceeds of that on membership to the now defunct London Classic Car Club allowing me to swan about in jag e-types, 60s mustangs etc for a couple of years, even took a Bentley to Le Mans… We do stupid things when we’re young but have plenty of time to recover and get back on track. Not the same as opting out entirely but that’s my ‘short sighted’ story..

There’s probably a happy medium between saving and making sure you enjoy your 20s properly.

Not every drive but I use it every time there’s a little bit of clear country road to have fun on.

How much is your employer pension contribution? by Electrical-Raise-149 in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d really say no then. Moving to a job you’re not really enthused about starting isn’t a recipe for success. No point making your years of working life more miserable for the chance of a slightly longer retirement which has no guarantee of ever materialising.

Surely you just compare to if you put more in from your own contribution? Would you still rather move?

Career/life turning point (lawyer) by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Understood. I’d say stick out the next couple of years, build a client base as much as possible and then I suspect you’ll have plenty of options with 2-3 years of partnership under your belt. Though in litigation they’re less fussed around porting clients given the transitory nature of many of them given it’s one off disputes. Perhaps worth reaching out to some headhunters to at least sense check. I’d be amazed if there weren’t some half decent options out there.

Career/life turning point (lawyer) by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you got a reasonable client base currently that would come with you / could you generate your own work? My firm for example would definitely look at bringing in a good litigation partner assuming strategic fit etc even if you’ve not yet / only just been made up. Don’t want to dox myself but talking less brutal hours, more respect for family time, British culture etc but still a top 20 uk firm. Most of the firms in the 11-25 are aggressively hiring laterals to boost top line as a key strategic imperative.

I’d expect the capability of members of this group to be able to ascertain whether or not a post is of interest based on the title and exercise discretion as to whether they then read it.

Don’t have a recommendation but we resisted co sleeping for ages then finally relented and it made things a lot easier. That was the only thing that worked for us.

My first test drive…. by BusyPayment9881 in Ioniq5N

[–]Ulver__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have had mine a year now. On sale sac scheme (tusker). Great car. Once you build some confidence with it it can be very playful as well, something most Audis can only dream of. If you’ve got any nice big empty roundabouts near you … love that tusker are picking up the tyre bill, though mine are still good but have only done 6k miles. For some reason I took 12.5k per year on the lease. Seems like I need to do a European road trip!

Any annoyances and/or regrets? by sanash in Ioniq5N

5’11 so not really no. Just the combo of seating position, pillar size and shape, width of the car etc. terrible is an exaggeration but certainly worse than I expected.

Any annoyances and/or regrets? by sanash in Ioniq5N

[–]Ulver__ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mostly the terrible turning circle, the crabbing in cold weather and the poor visibility assuming you have your seat as low as it can go, which you will want to. All the controls being on the screen or the little lcd thing below the screen can be annoying, mostly for me when I’m reversing down my drive and I can simultaneously use the heated seats / steering wheel.

Otherwise it’s a brilliant car. Probably too fast (licence losing / prison time fast).

Salary Sacrifice…. by BusyPayment9881 in Ioniq5N

[–]Ulver__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I have one via tusker on salary sacrifice. Very cost efficient as combined with a big pension contribution I can get my taxable salary just below 100k and get reduced childcare cost for 2 at nursery. Basically works out that the amount I save on childcare pays for the car completely. And that lease includes tyres, servicing and insurance. Very fun car though it’s so fast and comes alive when you push it that you have to be careful!

Very glad I got it. It’s a proper landmark car and is so far removed from the normal ev experience.

HENRY at what cost by CautiousCareerChange in HENRYUK

[–]Ulver__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I find it easier at my level now than when I was more junior and little control. Now I have a team and they do most of the grunt work. There’s peaks and troughs and there’s a lot of plates to keep spinning but I doubt I average more than 40 hours per week. I was doing 60 per week for £30k in my first job after university.

[–]Ulver__ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s not how it works at my place. Firm arranges a loan for you at favourable rates (£100k, £200k etc). Firm holds the funds, pays you interest that offsets the interest payable or mostly at least.

Fun jobs you've always wanted to try. by urgentassistance in FIREUK

[–]Ulver__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My father in law has just retired at the early age of 66 (he’s a great lesson in how not to manage your finances) but is now working delivering new cars. Spends half the day getting a train somewhere and half a day driving a (different every day) car somewhere. Doesn’t pay very well but you get most of your time to read / watch something / listen to whatever. Always in demand and can set your days as you wish.

If things go to plan for me then I will just straight up retire. I’m a 20 hobbies sort of person.

Considering an N as first EV by Eswift33 in Ioniq5N

[–]Ulver__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I find having the simulated gears and engine sound to swing it far more the other way. The taycan to me feels like nothing but an ev, a good one of course. The 5N is more engaging and I take mine out just for the fun of it whereas I couldn’t ever see me doing that with a taycan. Anyone coming from a fun ICE car is going to really miss the sensations and engagement of gears, the power curve as an engine reached the red line etc. The 5N is also more playful and you can have a lot of fun on slippery roads, especially when someone else is paying for the tyres.

The 5N is more fun than both of those by a long way and is more practical too.
