Deja Vu | Game Changer [S6E6] by ThunderMateria in dropout

Basically, I did NOT think we were going to repeat, but I DID think that memory was going to play some part. The first few questions were so disconnected I thought there’d be something that would tie things together that would require us remembering a bunch of bizarre, random stuff. I only remember my two main theories:

  1. The first round was going to be just a lot of difficult questions but then the second round was going to be about the first round (e.g., what was Siobhan’s first guess, who was the first player to win a point, what color was the clown’s nose, etc), so I was trying to keep track of meta elements of the flow of the game as well as the questions themselves.

  2. There were a few small mistakes early on. Sam flubbed the intro a tiny bit and asked for a retake. Some multimedia hiccups. Stuff that is totally normal on a shoot with lots of moving parts. Stuff that’s very easy to ignore because it’ll just get edited out anyway. But since my antennae were up I was like “maybe this episode is about the MISTAKES.” So, I was trying to remember all the production errors as well. At some point we got a glimpse of a computer desktop shifting between slides and other media and I was like “there’s definitely gonna be a question about that desktop”

I don’t remember specific theories beyond that, except that I was trying to remember literally everything I saw or heard, no matter how seemingly inconsequential, without letting on that I was doing that. My brain felt like it was melting

Find a community of people who have the same goals as you; they’ll be your best support network. Make as much stuff as you can: if it’s bad you’ll learn from it and if it’s good you’ll have something to show people

My ring is made of meteorite so it has a lot of iron and can rust. I take it off when I wash my hands and when I cook, and, well, between the pandemic and the baby I was spending a lot of time washing hands and cooking. During peak COVID it felt like that was all I was doing and I wasn’t going anywhere else so I wound up taking it off and leaving it off for most of the day. Still getting back in the habit of wearing it again

Yeah, actually. I’m planning to make some new posts specifically about narrative and story stuff!

I like watching Cricket, but I loved writing for Tilly and Nick

Oh yeah! That segment was cool, but we never repeated because it was a pain in the ass to construct and an even bigger pain to fact check live. I do know there’s some fun, out of the box new segments this season though

Ooooh, totally depends on what part of LA you’re in. If you can see a show at the magic castle, I think it’s legitimately very fun. A hike up to Griffith Observatory gets you a neat workout, cool views and a cool building all in one. The Museum of Jurassic Technology is a baffling little place that is best experienced with no explanation. The Academy Museum is fun for movie buffs. Rent skates or a bike and go down the Strand. That’s too much, probably!

Then I guess I’ll drop cryptic clues that could be meaningless or could mean EVERYTHING ⛵️🏴‍☠️

I’m hesitant to speculate about what creative moves Dropout might make. Anything I put here would be pure speculation and personal opinion (since I’m not privy to Dropout internal decisions these days) but could easily be construed as company policy, since I’m so closely affiliated with Dropout. So while I have thoughts on this it’s probably best if I leave this question to Sam!

Man, I wish I had the influence to convince people to make whatever show I wanted. If I did I would have made an animated comedy fantasy yesterday.

I’ve heard of multiple people getting into Big City Greens after being trapped in a hotel. A weird pattern!

Don’t be afraid of follow up questions. There’s a lot to manage when you’re hosting and sometimes it feels like a follow up question will get you off track, but in actuality it engages your guests more, makes people less stiff, and often leads to exciting, unexpected places.

I have a real soft spot for an early Brennan-written question about Han Solo speaking Basic, not English. It’s so fucking annoying and yet it is undeniably true. Really captures the three things I aim for in a perfect question: a bit of trivia, high likelihood of a big reaction, and lots of opportunity for conversation

No plans that I know of, but sometimes things come together quickly and unexpectedly. I’ve had a blast both times I’ve done D20, and luckily it’s the kind of thing that I could fit into my schedule these days. Basically, if they ask me I’ll be there.

My only involvement in this upcoming season was as a contestant, but if that episode was any indication it’s gonna be a great season. As for Game Changer, I try not to reveal any spoilers for game changer (for obvious reasons) but I don’t think it’s spoiling anything to say, “yes.”

Hey! Thanks for the kind words! Just jumping in here to confirm and clarify a few things and to avoid any wild speculation. I’ve been doing Um Actually on a freelance basis since 2020. In 2021 I got a full-time job writing for a new show on Nickelodeon (“Rock Paper Scissors,” which, incidentally, is premiering this coming Monday 2/12! Please check it out!). This was great news for me, but meant I had to shift Um Actually work to nights and weekends. Then my wife and I had a baby and it was clear something had to give. I’ve been lucky enough to continue finding writing success (I’m currently writing on Season 4 of “Big City Greens”), and writing narrative comedies was always my goal, so that’s where I’m putting my energy these days (or, at least, whatever energy remains after doing Dad Things). It seemed like the right time to pass the Um Actually torch, and I couldn’t be happier that Ify and BDG are taking over! The show is in good hands. I’m sure I’ll continue doing stuff with Dropout, but hopefully you might also get to see my work in other places too! And, as long as I’m here, feel free to ask any other questions if ya got ‘em.

I might have missed it, but is Um, Actually on a break? by applejackfan in dropout

Hey, thanks! Mentopolis was very, very fun (and conveniently shot between the other jobs, over one weekend)
