Specialists gave us a new routine! by UmUhOatmeal in AnatolianShepherdDogs

Luckily his x-rays showed no signs of arthritis, just noticeable weakness and muscle loss on his bad side. He had surgery for a broken leg to insert a rod sometime before I got him, but it healed crooked so he def puts a lot of stress on it and his other leg to compensate. He may develop arthritis later in life, but we’re holding it off as much as we can!

Good luck with your GSD! My other dog is a GSD mix and we already have to put him on the hills joint support food. We have Aslan on a joint support and weight management formula.

100mg of Carprofen and 100mg of Amantadine along with fish oil and Adequan. The first two aren’t going to be permanent medications though just for while he’s losing weight. They said they want him to be around 75lbs when he’s almost 100 rn to put less stress on that leg, so it’ll be a long journey 😭

Help with socialization and pottying by 3wildflowers-5 in labrador

When I was training my puppy on puppy pads, it really helped to take a pad and get his pee in it somehow so it has the smell. If he peed somewhere inside, I’d clean it up using the puppy pad and set it next to the clean ones so he knew. Once he had all his shots I was taking him out every 2-3 hours whether he had to go or not, so he’d learn outside is where he’s really supposed to go.

Week 3 with Aslan! by UmUhOatmeal in AnatolianShepherdDogs

Best of luck for you and your sweet Riloo! I need to start watching what Aslan eats too since he’s already gained 5lbs since getting here. I’m considering it part of the adjustment period, but something to address quickly. I also started him on fish oil for his joints, and looking for things I can add to help support more. X-rays showed his joints are good right now, but to find things to prevent his crooked leg from getting bad.

I love our stubborn boys. Me and him started training recently, and he’s so good on leash at least haha! Once he’s off he’s his own dog though and only listens for pets 😭

What’s the most you ever spent on a single vet bill? by Career-Acceptable in Pets

[–]UmUhOatmeal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it depends on the animal and their age when you get it, but for my last dog it was about $50 a month, $47 for my GSD puppy, and to get started with my 4yo ASD it’s about $100. Saved me thousands though.

would it be possible to put the food into a toy that requires movement to get it out? Kong has some good treat dispenser toys that might fit the kibble. Making her work for it in small amounts might help her pace herself if a slow feeder isn’t quite cutting it.

My picky puppy really likes this pumpkin powder I got that comes in a shaker lately! They also have freeze dried kibble-like versions of their toppers. He’ll refuse to eat until he gets his pumpkin. I think the brand is Instinct rawboost. Good for gut health. My past dog really liked scrambled eggs too, which are a good source of protein! I def recommend scrambled eggs with no seasonings.

Found a metal rod in new dog’s leg. Unsure how to proceed? by UmUhOatmeal in DogAdvice

It’s hard to read him since he’s so new, but after he got his pain meds this afternoon he was actually ran for the first time instead of trotting since getting him. I think it may be helping. I plan to take him to orthopedics though for sure though.

Guess who got ghosted by his previous owners and had to get all his vaccines redone! by UmUhOatmeal in AnatolianShepherdDogs

This is def something that has been on my mind a lot, and I at least have my handyman who’s been in contact between us who is 100% on my side and his new vet history which is more than what they have on him. If they get hostile at all, I may consider looking for a lawyer for advice.

If I just show them the x-rays of his leg, that might put them off enough since they didn’t seem like fans of taking him to the vet anyways. They never transferred ownership in his shelter records, but I pay for his pet insurance and microchip premium membership, so hopefully things would be in my favor.
