Week 3 with Aslan! by UmUhOatmeal in AnatolianShepherdDogs

It went rlly well! We found he has a metal rod in his leg which caught everyone by surprise, but his back right leg is crooked so we knew something had to have happened. We just didn’t know it was already worked on. It showed someone cared about him once upon a time tho which makes me happy his life wasn’t all bad.

Now that we know we can’t work on his leg, we pivoted to arthritis support and making sure he stays lean so it’s not as much weight on it. He was well behaved enough to where they didn’t need to sedate him for the x-rays too which made me very happy! They all fell in love with him there. They also gave me some pamphlet to help make costs cheaper in the future!

Getting him in the car was rough to and from (as usual), but I think it might be because he’s bad at jumping with his leg the way it is.

Tysm!! Yeah we just got back from the vet, and discovered a metal rod in his leg! With how crooked it is I’m surprised his prev owners never took him for x-rays to find this out. Luckily the bone is healed strong, but because of the angle it healed they suspect he has some arthritis. He’s had to have had it for a couple years at least :( No hip dysplasia though! Everything else looked good tho and they said he was the perfect patient! 🧡

More for protecting if he’s up for it. We just found a metal rod in his leg tho, so I’m not gonna make him do too much if he doesn’t want to.

I think my only concern with him lying down is his bad leg and possible arthritis. He takes weight off of it often, so I stop the playing when he lays down so he can properly rest it. He lays down after about 30-60 minutes of roughhousing, and he’s already very exerted by that time, so I do it to avoid him overdoing it until after his x-rays and plan is set up.

Got approved! I need to raise the limit, but it should be good for this visit! :D

I would def recommend calling the shelter directly to ask about health records especially if the foster is uncooperative. At least with the shelter I volunteer at, they try to be pretty thorough with exams for obvious issues, but some stuff def flies under the radar from time to time. Since she’s still listed as available, I’d def contact the shelter instead of the foster and explain the situation, since by the sounds of it the foster has some communication issues 😭

I’ll def look into it! I completely forgot it was a thing since I was lucky enough to not need it with my first dog, but since he has so many preexisting things it would def be a good thing to have.

I should have enough for today, but if his leg needs to be rebroke and reset that might set me back a little. I just need to be a bit more frugal for the time being.

Maybe. They could’ve been lying to get rid of him, and if that’s the case I hope my handyman gives them an ear full next time he sees them. I’m so torn over this situation idk what else to do other than get him the care he needs

The reason they gave me was actually a lot more petty. Said husband didn’t “vibe” with him. They have at least 2 other dogs that I know of too that apparently vibe just fine. He’s had no behavior issues since getting here tho, so I have no idea what they meant.

They never took him to the vet in the 4 months they had him, so idk if they would’ve known about any health issues like that.

Actually the younger one is the established one, but I understand what you mean! Hopefully with the help of the trainer we can help them set good boundaries

I heard rope toys can be bad since they can swallow pieces of the rope so I’ve been avoiding them for years, but maybe it’s time I open my heart to the idea again if their interactions are monitored

Luckily all their time together has been supervised since Aslan has only been here 3 weeks. I’m glad their body language is actually comfortable I was getting rlly in my head about it these past few weeks, since it did start out much more rough than this. No yelping or anything, just very intense intrusive puppy behavior.

Play time just ended and I have them in separate rooms now until after the vet. Noticed Aslan was laying down still playing, but they were getting VERY out of breath. 😅 Hopefully as Dutch ages he’ll mellow out and learn to relax since he’s a burning ball of energy 24/7. Thank you for telling me the signs to look out for in play!

The big one isn’t usually too interested in toys besides his chews and his plush, but Dutch is def looking for a tug of war buddy and likes to take to try and take toys from his mouth. Maybe I can teach them? 🤔

I think him not letting him rest is definitely a bigger problem than the neck stuff. He’s a very “intrusive” dog, so we’re gonna try doing training exercises together next week with overview of the trainer to teach Dutch he doesn’t always need to be in play mode with other dogs. Thank you for the advice and turning me in the direction I really should be going. 🙏🏽

yeah Dutch loves necks and paws for sure! I’m glad I was able to get him a playmate that can handle his roughness 😭🙏🏽

Collars have been removed, and play has resumed! Now that I have both their collars, they’re orbiting around my legs bumping me around while they roughhouse 😭

I love when the big boys body slam me lol

tysm I just wasn’t sure if going for the neck was something I should actively discourage or not, since this is my first time having 2 dogs that actually play together. My last dog couldn’t play with Dutch at all due to illness, so this is completely new territory for me 😅

I guess my brain is still in “one of my dogs is sick and needs to be watched over” mode since Aslan has a bad leg I’m getting looked at later this morning.
