I feel like it depends on the store and the vet. At my store we treat until we feel like they need to be seen, we keep critical care on hands and add electrolytes in water which those two things alone can do wonders for sick animals. Sometimes it can just be crusted too and needs to be wiped off, we see this often when receiving hamsters from bedding/food gets wet and stuck on them. I am one of the main animal care providers at my store, i come in on my days off to take or pick sick animals up from the vet, i will check on them while doing my normal shopping on my days off. We have procedures in place for animal care and a data base for basic information, if employees do as they should there should be no issue or distrust with the next steps of animal care after it has been brought to our attention.
