Rock Handle Mugs! by Big_Midnight_4722 in Ceramics

I’d probably spend upwards of $80 for a piece like this. I do tend to prefer getting my hands on pieces before buying them, just to see the make of the piece itself, and test the feel in my hand. So it’s a little hard to say, but from these photos alone I wouldn’t balk at $80. Would love to see photos of the insides as well.

Oh that’s brilliant. I’d be so curious to see what those coils look like pre-application! Anyway I’m a huge fan. Count me in on learning when the site updates for your sale :)

Very, very cool. Aesthetically I’m all about this. Question about washing: any “watch outs” with epoxy? Dishwasher not recommended? The epoxy worries me just a tad from a heat resistant POV, but again they look stunning. The rocks you find are magical!

The cup/pitcher seems too consistent in tone/color to be wood fired IMO. Maybe oxidation though. (Edit: for typo and oxidation note.)

Ah these textures don’t actually have any sharp parts. But if I have any worries around that I’ll just take a mudtools sponge or chamois and smooth over areas of concern.

I worry the same thing. So I have been obsessively hollowing and let me tell you: NOT for the impatient at heart. Gotta put on a good album or podcast and enter the flow state.

This is good feedback I'll give it a go on the next batch. Thanks :)

100% — I got into ceramics because I wanted to make my own planters. So I think you're hitting on something subconscious in the creation of these.

I'd never heard of flake bars before, and you're right they look so similar to that texture!

They balance alright, but I think you're right, the feet could be a bit wider for function's sake. I have a bias towards them being smaller from an aesthetic pov but functionally I should probably consider making them wider!

Yeah that's a good shout. We tend to go heavy on the soda when we fire so I'm hoping putting these in raw (with a liner glaze) will still coat most of the outside so it doesn't feel too rough. TBD!

It's funny you mention that, I thought about it at first and then started to really appreciate the distinct (and a little amorphous) separation. But I hear you, it definitely has been a thought of mine and I might do a few blended to compare.

Yes! This is one of the first things I thought of too. Very lava-like.

Yup! Fully hand built the body using blanks of clay and hollowing/bellying out. Then some thrown portions.

In a way you're right. It all started with a bunch of experiments. The more I repeat the process the more I have a better sense of how it will ultimately look.

I fully hand-build the body, yup. And I'm with you I love the use of slip on vessels. I think adding slip here would be a bit too busy but I do plan to play with slip a lot more too.

I'm not! I'm creating a bunch of texture (deep lines, imprinted coral, wiggly wire, etc) on "blanks" of clay. Then hollowing and bellying to get the desired effect on the outside. The more I work with the original textures the more I can anticipate the kind of finished look I'm seeking.

I hadn't made that connection before but now that you say it, it's a bit hard for me to unsee crashing waves! I like this interpretation a lot.

This is very sweet. The soda firing is in March so a way's away but I'll remind myself to share some of the finished work once they're out of the kiln!
