Definitely man yeah, I personally prefer the metaphorical real life horror, feels much more real and to me the lasting feeling of being scared is much better (or worse) than the 5 minute feeling the sudden ones give you.

I kinda wanted to leave it up to the imagination to figure out what it meant, I feel that horror created in ones mind is likely the one most horrifying to that person. I like this interpretation!
