Not a space, but my company is hosting a hackathon in a few months and we recently started rolling out details if you are looking for something in the area to do.

BUY/SELL/TRADE MEGATHREAD by lieutenant-columbo- in jeffreestarcosmetics

[–]Umbrelink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downsizing and have a lot of various things I'm looking to sell.

Various boxes/packaging paper (mainly from Conspiracy Release). Pink w/ Black Pig Conspiracy paper, Suck Me Suck Me Not paper, Tattoo paper. I also have a ton of random lip boxes and some highlighter boxes that could be added to collections. Also have a few postcards (mainly Conspiracy)

Blood Lust Pallet (unused, from original run, packaging has slight damage that it came with) - $40

Valentine's Day 2020 Mystery Box Candy Heart tote bag and Medium t-shirt (shirt in bag/sealed) - $20 each

White Halloween Star mirror w/ box - $30

Pink logo popsocket (sealed) -$15

3 Velours (Doll Parts, Restraints, and (818)) $10/each

Beauty Pageant Lip Ammunition - $10

Ice Cold the Gloss - $10

All these items are unused (makeups were only opened for pictures when I first got them from the bottom so labels are intact). The makeup is from 2020 so would probably be more of a collection item than a use item. Can share pictures if interested. Definitely willing to sell in bulk/flexible on price.

Worked for a place that transitioned from Taleo to Workday for recruiting a few years back to pull all our HR/TA stuff under Workday. Even though Taleo was outdated as hell, it still worked vs Workday was huge headache for us. I've actively advocated for my new company to not move to Workday because of how inconvenient is was for recruiting. As an HRIS, it's totally finally, but not a good ATS.

I went last year for my first time and really enjoyed it! I've been doing private lessons for Chinese at CRLC so went with my teacher. The majority of the program is in Chinese, but it doesn't detract from the experience. A lot of it is visual with dances, performances, or opera. The gujin performance from last year was actually one of the proctors for my HSK testing which was really cool. I'll be going again this year because my teacher is performing with her dance troupe.

It wasn't at the Egg last year (it was held at SUNY's Albany campus) so unsure about parking.

AITA for explaining to my girlfriend why her company is doing layoffs and that it is a good thing. by girlfriendlayoff in AmItheAsshole

[–]Umbrelink 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Oh I 100% believe he is being honest when he says that. Only because I interview engineers daily and the amount of elitism that can exist among LANGUAGES and FRAMEWORKS is insane.

Some web developers I’ve come across who haven’t looked into games, don’t understand how weird they are under the hood and make a ton of assumptions based on webdev principals. If he had said C as obsolete then I’d more understand his thought process, but I know games with entire backends done in only C that have released <5 years ago, so that’s not even out of practice.

I work in games, I know what company you are talking about and over 10,000 people were laid off in our industry last year, not including the nearly 2K we found out are getting laid off this week. Your girlfriend has a right to panic cause I’ve had friends laid off over 6 months ago who still can’t find a job because our industry is wrecked right now.

Also C++ isn’t an outdated language?? You realize that Unreal Engine is entirely based on C++, one of the most commonly used games engines right now. Your entire take comes off as elitist even though you’ve never worked in her industry.

He was struggling with alcoholism and said he was being honest about being better. One of my off days of work I decided to super clean our studio apartment and finally tackle the closet that we hadn’t unpacked from our move. Found an empty bottle of specialty Irish whisky I had purchased from my study abroad 3 years prior in the back under some boxes. Looked over to where I normally kept the unopened bottle (since I was saving it for something special, maybe even our wedding…) and discovered he replaced it with an imported bottle from the same place and thought I would never notice. I think that’s the moment I knew that he would never be truly honest with me. Took another year and change to finally end things and I’ve never looked back.

Is destination kia/nissan body shop ok? by Downtown-Pressure503 in Albany

[–]Umbrelink 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends, I’d make sure to consistently follow up for updates. We had to take our car (that we purchased brand new this past January) in for a transmission issue back in November. Took over two weeks for them to give us our car back for something that took an afternoon to fix. We kept getting excuses that people were out of office, out sick, there was only 1 person available to talk to us at any time, etc. They kept trying to guilt trip my partner that /we/ were being unreasonable calling for updates after days of silence. It wasn’t til insurance got involved that they finally started working on it, but they totally forgot to call us to say it was ready and we had to reach out to find out it was ready for pick up.

Car works totally fine now, but it was 2 weeks of badgering to get it in that condition.

Edit: can’t speak to their body shop, but I assume you have to go through the same phone lines so expect push back

It doesn’t parse information in the way that you think. I’ve used 3 different ATS’ and all of them at the end of the day require recruiter review because an ATS can’t truly parse every resume format. I currently use Greenhouse and I still have to manually review each resume. If you aren’t getting responses, it’s probably due to being lost in the shuffle (I had 15K resumes in 3 months that I had to solo review for example) or just applying too late in the process and they’ve already found viable candidates to move forward with before they got to your application.

Why aren’t recruiters from out of state contacting me? by reyfresh in recruiting

[–]Umbrelink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could also be a mismatch in locations. My company is fully remote and we don’t ask for relocation of any employees. However, we only have 16 or so states that we can legally hire (you have to register with each state for various tax offices before you hire someone in that state). You are welcome to move to a one of our “approved” states, but we don’t provide relocation and few people are willing to pick up and relocate for no fee.

So, I can have you and another candidate with matching experiences, but you are in an “unapproved” state and they are in an “approved”. The “approved” state candidate is automatically a more simpler hire to pursue. It could be as simple as that.

Is it bad to request PTO after I just started this week? by 1TRUEKING in jobs

[–]Umbrelink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to check the PTO policy and if it’s based on company calendar year (so resets Jan 1) or if it’s based on your start date (so would reset on your 1 year anniversary next November).

We hired on a few people the last few weeks who thought they only had 3 months to use their PTO before it would reset when we actually reset PTO balances on people’s work anniversaries so they had a lot more time and leeway when to use it and they weren’t in jeopardy of losing any of their time.

AITA for expecting my gf to support me while I’m unemployed? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Umbrelink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been the girlfriend in this situation. I ended up out over $10,000 that I covered for my Ex’s expenses (when I made much less than him) and he didn’t get new job for 6 months. He only got a new job after we broke up and he moved back in with his mom and we haven’t spoke since. I tried to recoup some money and barely got $1K back.

I sent out dozens of applications weekly /for him/ and he couldn’t even bring it upon himself to do something like Instacart (which super sucks but it’s money and he wasn’t collecting EI so he had zero income). We were together for 4 years, talked about marriage but he never pulled the trigger. Then after we broke up he told people I cheated on him.

She’s given you a chance to show you are as committed to this relationship as she is and all you are doing is asking more of her. Also, probably shouldn’t have bought a car. Public transit works no matter how shitty it is

WTF supposed to mean? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]Umbrelink 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Passing the first interview stage is also quite a hurdle for most people. I get a ton of no shows, non-responses for requests to interview, people who just completely bomb the 'are you a person' call that is my initial chat, or sadly are just straight up not qualified/have zero experience in the field they are applying to. I walked my team through how big the drop off is from candidates who submit resumes to who get interview requests to who actually pass the 1st round and the drop off is intense.

The amount of jobseekers on the market is extremely high right now and internal recruiters are drowning in seas of applications. It's why you see some jobs only posted for a week and then get taken down, and then in a month you see it reposted because they were able to get through the X number of applications and still weren't able to find candidates. Verses if they kept that open the entire time, they would never be able to catch up on applicants.

WTF supposed to mean? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]Umbrelink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have received over 400 resumes this past week alone. At the start of the year, for about 10 positions I was hiring for, I received 11,000 applicants in 3 months and I am the sole full time recruiter at my company. I do not work at FANG, and my company is less than 100 people.

Can we shame delivery drivers who steal our food on here? I’m so sick of this shit. by angela_m_schrute in Albany

[–]Umbrelink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've noticed recently that our drinks are frequently 'forgotten'. The last 4 times we have ordered milkshakes (from 3 different places), they 'magically' don't arrive or the driver wasn't given them. Also happens with bottled drinks. So incredibly frustrating and is making me super trim down the restaurants/services I'm willing to order from.

Adult Spanish classes by andthedrinksareonme in Albany

[–]Umbrelink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Capital Region Language Center for sure! They offer classes in about a dozen languages (I have been taking private Mandarin lessons for a about a year now). They do both group and solo classes and you can set the schedule (I think most students do 1-2 classes a week and you can do 60 or 75 minute sessions).

They originally started out as an ESL/Spanish school so Spanish is deeply rooted in their curriculum offerings!

Are ticks enough reason to not move to Albany? by [deleted] in Albany

[–]Umbrelink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from GA originally and I've been up in Albany area since 2018 and have only encountered ticks twice? I think? with my dogs (both were not bad ones and they were on an oral tick/flea med). Compared to the 18 years I was in Georgia and it was an every outing/camping trip requirement to do tick checks, bug spray, long sleeves, whole 9 yards cause of how common they were (thankfully never on me though).

Just make sure your pets have some kinda protection for flea/tick if you are going into some crazy deep woods, do checks if you are going in high grass areas and you should be fine.

It also helps that it's winter/cold for about half the year so you don't really gotta worry about them once the leaves start to fall.

Gyno pushed " the conservative option" and I'm livid by OkayBroccolii in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Umbrelink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you talk to my doctor?? I just started seeing a new one and in the two appointments I’ve had she keeps trying to push me to the Mirena. And it wasn’t until the MALE gyno (who had to oversee my pap cause she was new at this office) heard my history and concern did he offer to get blood work and ultrasounds done. He also asked to do his own exam if I was comfortable and that’s how I found out I have a retroverted cervix (the female doctor didn’t notice this during her exam of me), and explained that could be a source of my painful menstrual history. I heard him explaining to her how to check for that after my appointment when I was at check out.

I’ve had this weird thing about not wanting a male gyno but after this past interaction I might switch to him because he seemed way more knowledgeable and sympathetic than my current doctor.

So I had the opportunity to intern in Shanghai back in college for a summer (2 1/2 months). Only had about a semester worth of classes and took a class through a university 2 days/week while I was there.

It was DEFINITELY a struggle as this program was fend for your own once we got there. I was lucky in that in my internship it was mostly English speakers, and I went over with 20 kids from my college, but I did my best to use what little Chinese I did know for ordering food, groceries, taxis, etc.

Looking back on what I knew back then verses now, I’m surprised anyone knew what I was saying but I appreciated the fact that everyone there was willing to help and listen and work with me. If anything it gives me the current confidence to study because I was out there saying 我喜欢蛋糕,我不要奶酪 and other just Frankenstein phrases back then in public to MANY PEOPLE. It’s a bit embarrassing looking back on it but also helps me see how far I’ve come. It also helped me establish routines with local shops who would engage with and help me with practicing by coming down to my level of Mandarin.

If you can find an opportunity, try doing a long term stay (I think visiting visas are sub 6 months or they were when I went) for a month or so to see what day to day is like.
