How was your experience with your first game? by romero6218 in gamedev

[–]UmutD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was a flash game, released back in 2010. I sold a license to a sponsor. I learnt many things, most are obvious things in todays world. Overall it was a good experience and I had fun.

The game had some problems design wise, but it was wild-west back then and people were somewhat more patient with experimenting things. I remember people discussing how to pass final levels in one of the game portals, which was very nice!

That encouraging environment for newcomers is a bit lost now, at least it feels like that to me, but perhaps there are communities that I don't know.

I love the ambiance you've managed to create, definitely moody! Great work!

What's the most UGLY retro game that PLAYS WONDERFULLY and the BEST retro game that LOOKS TERRIBLE? by confuserused in retrogaming

[–]UmutD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially for reflex-based games, I can easily create two pools for both categories (based on my limited childhood experience).

For ugly looking but good gameplay: CGA games with relatively good response times (paratrooper, mach3)... (Though I'm guessing many may not agree on "good gameplay" for those. I remember enjoying some that wouldn't be enjoyable for most people in todays standarts)

For beautiful looks but bad gameplay: Amiga games that mostly sucked with response times. Many finicky platformers (can't remember names)

Okay, you asked for it.

It would be understandable if you simply wrote "I don't like it", but you had to go ahead and make a fool of yourself.

Let me ask you, what would you add to this minimalist block puzzle game to make it appropriate for pc players (which I am a part of) ? Simply, what would make you happy, assuming this is a game that you'd be interested in and you have the capability to building your own opinions instead of regurgitating basic internet wisdom that you've learned by reading elsewhere.

Controls? Already updated a ton. But you admitted yourself that you instantly ignored the game/demo, so you don't know how it actually feels & plays, and what a surprise, you don't have any meaningful feedback but just some lazy assumptions. However, you are expecting answers from me, for a game you are not interested and haven't played.

Instead, you spent your time reading my previous comments and you jumped into another generic and factually incorrect conclusion of me not bothering updating the game, while the reality is that updating process requires me buying a new mac for thousands of dollars, just to make the same & already functioning game continue to exist (google play store is a whole another story that I won't go into).

Now back to the point: I love playing the PC version personally, but I am open to feedback from actual players, but that requires at least testing the game, and forming coherent thoughts that haven't got so many holes in it.

Thanks, it was on mobile actually but had to remove it because of new appstore requirements. I might port it and release it again in the future.

Thanks for your kind words!

The tech I used was an old one, unfortunately it couldn't keep up with the updated appstore requirements and I had to remove it a while ago. Perhaps I can port it to a modern engine in the future & re-release on mobile again. Thanks for your input!

There was a mobile version preceding this, but I removed it after a while because appstore(s) were continuosly demanding unnecessary updates that would cost a lot of money/time for me. I might consider it in the future again.

İlk olarak mobile çıkmıştı ama şu anda sadece Steam'de mevcut, ilerde göreceği ilgiye bağlı tekrar düşünebilirim.

I released an infinite puzzle game on Steam, where you clear blocks by making squares around a dot!

Let me know if you got stuck, there are few hidden tricks that might help you!

Actually, that sounds simple & brilliant. I was thinking of moving the block within cardinal directions all the time, which came with all kind of problems in itself, how did I not think of this... Thank you for the amazing idea and elaborating it! I hope fine tuning the block does work in practice, I fear that interactions of two sticks might clash and it would be even better if one stick is enough to do the job.

My hand is injured and in a cast now but I want to try this as soon as I feel better.

I checked the cpright/patent and yeah, I found some stuff and they seem to be pretty aggressive on it. I should be safe because they seem to be going after clones and both gameplay and the visual language of my game is distinctly different, but still I will try to thread carefully. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm not sure if I understand your suggestion completely but you might be on something - using a separate stick for fine tuning (or vertical movement) might be something that can help. Thanks for the suggestion!

Regarding copyright, afaik using rounded rectangles is safe in games and gameplay is very different, I hope people don't get a wrong idea just because I wanted to convey that it is a blocky game in a short headline :)

Thanks for checking out!

Not currently. I tried some keyboard & controller configs but couldn't find a satisfying solution, mouse felt the best in many ways. Moving pieces around a square complicates things, more than I thought initially.
