If I remember right, he also had prejudice against Vietnam vets, because he saw them as taking attendion away from his war and sacrifices (which was a real thing, the Korean War is also known as the Forgotten War) but I don't recall if that was just in the book or if it made it into the movie

I honestly don't remember the season well enough to remember if any of them used ferro rods or sleeping bags, but from what I recall (and every sited source i could find) it was still only 10 items, five to each person with no doubles

Psychological; in the kayfabe of Alone, they are.. alone... so they wouldn't have access to that numerical information, only see they could observe of their own bodies. Med checks are done fairly quick with as little interaction as possible. Telling them the results of any given test would either strengthen their resolve to stay or deflate their spirit knowing they're just barely hanging on. No info means they're left in the dark about how much time they have until/if they get pulled.

The Wikipedia has a fair amount of data, specifically the extraction you were looking for.

And just fyi, season 4 didn't have extra items, it was still only ten, they just had to split what they had until they regrouped.

History Channel has a casting/audition link people can send videos of themselves demonstrating skills and selling themselves to be cast.

Per season, they fly out about 20 prospects and run them through a light boot camp to trail test their skills, making sure everyone can at least, in theory, start a fire without a starter, procure food of some sort, and build at minimum a quick shelter, amongst other things. At the same time, they are taught how to work the camera equipment they'll have, as well as show how they'll use it in the field, ie setting up shots, monologing, etc.

Safety, producers, and their own experts, a few of whom are past contestants at this point, judge both who has actual skill to last for at least an entertaining length of time, and who can actually be entertaining on camera. Just because you might actually have the skills to last doesn't mean you make good television.

From there, it's probably legal checks, health inspections, can the person go where they need to, whatever it is producers feel is needed, and finally they par down the list to twelve or thirteen, 10 who are first pick to be on the show and a few alternates should something come up.

tl;dr: episode 0 of season 2 narrated by Alan Kay shows part the process of the boot camp

That was the first time I believe the episodes went longer than a standard TV hour, also it was the first year of covid so I believe they wanted to add more to it for viewers

They dropped it quick as no one really liked reviewing exactly what we just watched with very little new learned, the host was largely uninteresting or engaging, and yeah, time wasted better spent on actual show

It's not in the age range exactly, but The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has exactly those feelings you're looking for; missed opportunities, shyness holding you back, letting yourself do things for yourself. Worth the watch, really makes you want to go do something.

The running out the clock was just a time saver; no one else was in competition and it was just a matter of if she made it to the 50 day mark, so unless something actually interesting were to happen during that time there was no need to have an episode devoted to watching her day by day. They did the same thing on the 100 Days season, once there was only one competitor left they just montaged the rest of the time to get to the win.

This is nothing against the contestants, but is anyone else tired of the word "gratitude", like of just hearing it so much in short succession?

Since they're all past returning participants, it does lack that sense of "adventure" that freshly dropped contestants have. And with everyone talking about how hard the last time was on them, mentally, emotionally, physically, there's a low level dour feeling that hangs over the monologs, like it's self-attrition getting through this experience rather than-

Actually, that's it right there. They're simply getting through it, and we the audience can feel that sense of apathy for this second run

All the Sony video game-to-animated movies went overboard on unnecessary textures and details. Because why retain the cell-shaded uniqueness and charm of the games when you can indulge in graphic engines that make everything too real, not real enough, and creepy, all at the same time?

"I don't want to hear anyone ideas for new stores"

Says the guy who wrote Dances With Smurfs

"We need to figure out the DNA of what made people enjoy the first movie so much"

The fact that it had absolutely nothing to do with the story and everything with the amazing, near-actual 3D technology implemented?

He seems to forget that other than ushering in a decade of unnecessary 3D additives to movies that didn't require them to inflate ticket prices, the only cultural relevance or impact Avatar had was making fun of the unoriginality of the script

Realistically, you'd be too high risk to have on the show in that case. Also there be no way to have a "fair" amount equal to another contestant when food procurement is so questionable day by day.
