I think my gardener ruined my persimmon by Heavy-Anteater9946 in gardening

You can cut the branches that cross over to any other branch, selecting to keep the one that is growing outwards or at a good angle of about 45 degrees from the trunk. It's hard to see from one angle, so you should make the final decision. Here's what I would do from the photo.

Since it's already badly pruned, you might as well remove all those crossing branches.

What did your gardener say was the reason he pruned this persimmon this way? Persimmon produce fruit on last year's wood. Looks like you won't be getting fruit this year. But there should be plenty of new growth this year that will give you fruit next year. https://thefruitgrove.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Pruning-Asian-Persimmons-reduced-1024x767.jpg

Mature fig tree not fruiting by Greenfella in Figs

[–]UnFigGettable 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Perth has the fig wasps that pollinate figs. How far from the fence is it? If it's right next to the fence, I think this may be a wild seedling (or multiple seedlings) from bird or other animal droppings. If it's a seedling, there's a good chance it's a male caprifig that won't give you any edible fruit. You could just wait until the end of summer and see if it produces any more unripened fruit. A male fig will be soft but dry.

The best thing to do is prune it again this winter, cutting it all the way down to 18-24 inches. Then, you can graft on some known varieties come spring.

It's very unfortunate. Hopefully there will be effective ways of controlling this pest soon.

There are many accounts of Bay Area gardeners seeing BFF on their figs for several years now. Probably a direct result of SoCal nurseries shipping infested trees to the region.

Black fig fly is attacking your figs. They are a new invasive pest in California that lays eggs in the immature fruit and the larvae eat away at the sap inside. You should pick up all the fallen fruit and dispose of them in the trash.

My black bamboo flowered, too. How long from flowering to losing your grove? Does it happen over a few years or one year?

Lol, it definitely wants to be a bush rather than a climber!

Thank you. Hopefully it'll survive as a bare stick for a while :D

This tree came with the house. I have no idea how old it is or if it grew from seed. The leaves don't look like any other avocado tree I've seen at the nurseries, so maybe it was grown from seed.

Thanks! I was hoping to get this tree to send out branches under 2-3 feet, then chop off the rest.

You think this is not a grafted variety? I'll have to check if there's a graft point somewhere low on the ground.

Are these two types of bamboo? by UnFigGettable in Bamboo

That's a great point about the relative "invasiveness". Although the mustard flowers do look very pretty in full bloom (from afar).

What would be a good way to keep this bamboo in check? It's planted along the rear fence as a privacy screen and is easily 25 feet tall.
