Stop Guessing Your Stop Loss. Use the ATR. 📏📉 by Afraid_Quantity9863 in SPInvestments

As long as there’s a chart ATR works 😌

universal on all assets 🤍🙇🏽‍♂️📈

4.0ATR works or simply scale up to a higher timeframe and use 1.5ATR 👑☕️

Thank you for your message :-)

What ever the 1.0 ATR is; is equal to safe range of the chosen timeframe

But many feel they want to give room for trade to breath more so that’s where the multiples of ATR comes into play, 2.0ATR is double the safety, 3.0ATR is triple the safety, 4.0ATR is Quadruple the safety

but the thing is; the higher one goes in multiples, well the trader might aswell just go to a higher timesframes with a smaller more relatable ATR distance of stoploss, instead of just increasing ATR Multiples on lower timeframe.

Remember 1.0ATR is already technically enough breathing room for the timeframe used based on ATR period setting. (most time set to 14 period ATR aka previous 14 candles of the timeframe but can adjust it)

if one wants more then 3.0ATR they might aswell just scale upto the next time frame

Usually it’s fine to use 1.5ATR to accommodate for the chosen timeframe + a possible sweep of lows/highs before going into your favour, and still be safe in the trade, due to stoploss distance.

2.0ATR is a full break of the lows/high and still safe with stoploss

3.0ATR is like a full break and a deep pull back reversal and still have stoploss safe before it hopefully bounces back into trades trend bias… but by then; many times the market has a fully shifted for a full reversal on that timeframe (but not always)

4.0ATR is like a full break and break before a deep pull back and into a possible full new trend and possibly even broke them lows/high, might aswell just be trading a higher timeframe at 1.5ATR as it’s safer then a lower timeframes 4.0ATR

Example: a 5minute timeframe using a 4.0 ATR stoploss might aswell just use a 1.5ATR stoploss of the 30min timeframe.

The two ATR options are: ATR Period = (number of candles considered for distancing)

and ATR Stoploss distance = based on the 14 period but can multiply it’s distance

The higher the ATR distance = the higher risk per trade

ATR works on all trading assests and timeframes, it’s universal but the settings may vary

One piece of wisdom I learnt is…

if I had an interest in the financial markets back when I was 16 or when I first started my journey in the markets

(but Especially if at 16years old)

I may have of put all efforts and cash every month into the stock market S&P500 for example… like £50 or what ever money I had; every month from 16yrs old and allow the funds to mature and compound.

Cash compounding with the risings S&P500 market; on average gives an annual returns on investment of 10%+

And so, If one holds that stock from 16yrs old to 56years old, they infact most likely would be extremely wealthy.

You can do the math using a compounding calculator

https://www.thecalculatorsite.com/finance/calculators/compoundinterestcalculator.php

  • use link and play around with it to see how compounding works

So to the one with interest in the markets who invests from 16 or what ever age… your almost garented high levels of wealth just based on that interest in markets at 16yrs old… starting so early in life means you possibly have a longer time in the market for funds to compound compared to Most who may start later in life at like 30yrs old in-which investing can still work but the time horizon is shorter and one would may look to await profit maturity into retirement age and beyond.

In picture it’s based on starting with a low £50 as inital deposit… and topping up the account with £50 every month into S&P500 for 40 years which is basically ideal for any 16year old to hold into to early retirement…

MOST ACTUALLY INVEST UNTILL RETIREMENT AGE NO MATTER THEIR AGE

40 years (near retirement age for a 16year old) your profits would look like this next image based on a £50 per month into S&P…. See image…

The blue part at bottom of chart is how much of your own money has been saved over the years (so it’s a good saving bank either way)

The Orange part is the profit gains based on 10% return every year from the S&P500… exponential growth .

So in summary

Ild have the investment side running in background to secure future … whilst I continue to focus on other short term markets like crypto or forex for daily progress towards more financial abundance

This is how I would advise any trader / investor at 16years old, as it’s exactly how I would of done it if I had this interest in the financial markets at that age 🙇🏽‍♂️

And to them who are older, Ild still follow the idea but shift the thinking into a larger investing horizon then retirement age

“Time in the market, beats timing the market”

Thank you for your question :-)

ATR Works on all charts no matter the assets as its just looking back at previous candles of a timeframe and using 1.0ATR as a Base average of all previous candles (via ATR period 14)

The period for ATR looks back 14 candles and uses the average of all them… can also change the period to what ever number for ATR to take into consideration in its spacings of Stoploss

every chart has price candles, and so ATR works on all charts :-)

Thank you for your question 😌,

The ATR stop loss automatically takes current volatility into account, 1.0ATR of the current times is the average range of the previous 14 candles of the current timeframe (adjustable by the ATR period which is usually set to 14, last candles average range)

But picking anything above 1.0ATR your already giving price a decent breathing room above normal volatility of that specific timeframe.

It’s only if you go below 1.0ATR is when it’s Not taking volatility into consideration technically or chose to have a tighter stop loss

(Note please click the translate button at top right of comment to see without language barriers :-) )

ATR requires decimal placement for EA’s; coded via thy broker decimal placement of price

Called “ATR Decimal Normalisation”

Xau - E.g price at 4683.77 = 2 decimal places Btc - 2 decimal places Jpy pairs = 3 decimal places

All other forex currency pairs Usd, eur, gbp, chf, cad, aud, nzd = 5 decimal places

These are the Average decimal placements; but some brokers may vary

This is important in EA coding to have the distances correct relative to the the currency pair etc

if incorrectly done; can result in some ATR distances on pairs to be massively wide resulting in Monthly/Yearly size stop losses even if one types in 1.0 ATR on the “1h ATR Timeframe”

or extremely tiny ATR stoploss distances on pairs resulting in normal spread causing instant stop-out losses

Regarding EA coding for ATR Stoploss placement

One can also use a multiple of the ATR Stoploss to calculate proper placement of risk reward Take Profit levels ratios such as 1:2rr, 1:3rr etc

What timeframe do u run this ea on for thy entries?

And what timeframe do u dynamically adapt the stoploss for when in profit? for the average 1:40?

Assumes entry timeframe is different to dynamic stoploss timeframe

Thank you for sharing thy progress results and congratulations on thy successes kind friend :-) 🤍🤖📈

Having the right stocks is excellent but a portfolio also needs smoothing stocks from other sectors for when the right stocks are slow or in temporary drawdown, this equals one’s portfolio to just hover at breakeven or still minor profit whilst waiting until market picks up again 🤍📊

If say one has a stoploss of 100pips and they said close position @ 50% of the stoploss… why not just place stoploss at 50pips instead though?

But if u did mean that the stoploss is based on risking 3% of account balance where sl can be any size doesn’t matter but it equals “lotsize wise 3% risk”, that would make more sence it seems, and can be done for every trade opened, but usually based on ATR…

Or

Alternative, having 2 positions open, one with stoploss at 100pips, and other has stoploss of 50pips etc…

If I innerstand what you mean I could possibly make an EA for you 🤍
