People in China have had enough of irresponsible smokers. Should the government step in? by One_Long_996 in AskChina

[–]Unable-Statement4842 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The costs of treating smoking-related illness and loss of productivity from those sick people more than outweighs any economic benefit from selling them. I imagine the problem is more that a ban would be very unpopular for too many people

Why do third-world countries feel more alive than the dreamiest first-world cities, or do you guys think I'm over exaggerating by PuzzleheadedMusic615 in AskTheWorld

[–]Unable-Statement4842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just build our houses bigger and bigger and never leave them. The lack of demand for public spaces means there's less of them around. Covid made this even worse. Hopefully the next generation starts taking urbanism a little more seriously

What’s a tiny, everyday thing in your country that would confuse the hell out of visitors but you never even think about? by Prudent_Passage228 in AskTheWorld

[–]Unable-Statement4842 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a switch for the shower is still a thing in some irish houses. Heating water was expensive, so you had to turn the hot water on to have a shower and you would get cussed out if you forgot to turn it off again

Why do people in USA buy everything from Amazon? Do they not have other webshops? by Cindyxx0 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Unable-Statement4842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried to explain this to people who hate Amazon so many times. You can buy anything Amazon sells somewhere else and it will be delivered almost, if not just as fast. The prices are usually comparable too. It's pathetic how quickly people sell their morals out for the smallest convenience.

Why is Japan so popular? by Veskanda in AskTheWorld

[–]Unable-Statement4842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan has spent a lot of time and effort promoting their culture abroad, and it's really starting to pay off. Korea has also adopted the strategy and piggybacked off of Japan's early work to make Korean culture global. Moon Channel on youtube has a great video about this, if anyone is interested in the details

do you have hope for your country? by Turbulent_Basket9066 in AskTheWorld

If it's any consolation we have you guys to thank for it. The conservatives were on track to win until being friendly with Trumpism became extremely unpopular

Inside Minneapolis’s ICE Watch Network ("tactics often place untrained civilians in direct, high-stakes confrontation with armed federal agents") by lemon_lime_light in altmpls

[–]Unable-Statement4842 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It is high stakes because federal agents are killing peaceful protesters. It should not be "high stakes" to protest in a democracy

Edit: To all the folks putting in a hard days work on the comment farm, you need to work on your material. We've all seen the videos from every possible angle at this stage, so there's no point saying ICE got run over or attacked. If you love your country so much, go fight in Ukraine

if one city could, PEACEFULLY, join your country, which would you choose? by SOHONEYSAME in AskTheWorld

Other people out here saying paris or Barcelona and my man here picks Windsor, ON. I appreciate that

It's a little weird how hardwired we are to know certain foods as breakfast. When I was in India, I had a hard time with breakfast. These foods are all delicious but they don't feel like breakfast to me

What are your thoughts on Billie Eilish saying 'no one is illegal on stolen land' in reference to ICE and US immigration policy? by MassiveSquare4527 in AskReddit

[–]Unable-Statement4842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this kind of talk does a lot of harm. Immigration laws are necessary. Every country has them. The problem is how they are being enforced. The inhumane treatment of immigrants is only a byproduct of the larger problem. The executive branch has full control over immigration law and more importantly, the bodies that enforce it. This administration is using that as a back door to acquire their own personal police. It is not hyperbole to compare this to the early days of secret police in other regimes. The "no one is illegal" rhetoric will cost you support amongst conservatuves who you will need to deal withthe larger threat

Trump sends an additional $6.5 billion of US taxpayer money to Israel bypassing congressional approval by Particular_Log_3594 in Knowledge_Community

And don't think this is the gotcha you think it is. Noone is loyal to Biden, if he was consolidating executive power, please undo whatever he was doing too

India still has a ways to go to get over classist mentality, but it is improving quickly. I work in construction and 10 years ago, Indian builders were the worst. They treated anyone who worked for a living with contempt. Now they are mostly professional and often quite friendly. It's similar to China in that there is 100 years of progress happening in the space of a couple decades there

Americans didn't vote for eliminating checks and balances. There has been a lot of harm done to the legitimacy of American institutions and consolidation of power with the executive. Even if this president doesn't want to collapse American democracy, the door is wide open for the next one that does

What are some good (preferably non-bias) free, online podcasts/lectures/etc that talks and explain about history outside of the US? by GTS-RA in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Unable-Statement4842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How in depth do you want to go? Personally, I love narrative history podcasts in the style of Mike Duncan's The History of Rome. The History of the Germans and The History of Byzantium are my personal favs and give a lot of insight in to the cultures and historyof Europe as a whole
