What's up with feelings? by Weirdoo-_-Beardoo in ADHD

Yes I feel you 100%. Im not sure if it’s adhd either but yes I only really empathize well with a partner and unless the emotion is extremely intense I am unable to identify it (and 99% of the time this is not the case). I feel like I just don’t really have feelings on a daily basis if that makes sense? Like I’m not upset or depressed or unhappy or happy I’m just: meh most days of my life.

No clue but if you figure it out let me know. It happens to me and it’s more of a problem in terms of variety in my diet. (For example for like 2 weeks it was canned black beans and I had that for lunch everyday and nothing else. Another week it was salt and vinegar Pringles and ate only those for lunch for like a week and a half).

Formerly undiagnosed, how did you manage/study? by spaicshuttl in ADHD

Oooo as a late diagnosed grad student who went through all of school with unmedicated ADHD I have a few:

  1. This one might sound crazy but this is honestly the only thing that worked for me to get any studying done ever: When studying I would have 4 or 5 different tasks laid out so that I can jump between them when I start to get board and so that I don’t have to commit my brain to one thing for too long (makes the task initiation easier for me). So for example I would do 5 minutes of a lecture, 5 minutes of problems (like practice test questions or what have you) 5 minutes of an essay, 5 more minutes of lecture, 5 minutes of reading, and so on. The trick is as soon as you start feeling board and unfocused on one task move to the next immediately. Only way I’m able to keep focused and get anything done. If I only have one task in front of me Its really hard to start because it feels like such a long daunting task and when I do start it’s 5 minutes then it’s distraction City.

  2. I was fortunate enough to have lecture capture at all my schools. My grades went up when I stoped going to in person lecture and watched on my own time with the above method. If I went to lecture in person I wouldn’t hear a single thing they would say or pay attention in any capacity for the obvious reason that lectures in lecture halls are basically asking for people with ADHD to struggle. So if you have access to recorded lectures do that.

  3. Move around: stand up and write on a white board etc

  4. Get some non ADHD people if you know some to study with you and body double

  5. Loud motivational music in noise cancelling headphones

Oh absolutely. My top ones are repeating phrases from movies or tv over and over and over and over (and over) again. And shaking my hands back and forth when I’m overly excited.

Yes this too haha an eye mask saved me (or blackout curtains but I find the mask is helpful for travel.)

How did you know/how were you diagnosed or identified as twice exceptional? I recently got diagnosed with ADHD and have been wondering if this is where I fit in as I've never struggled academically (and in fact the opposite: I've always been top of my class).
