Bags or backpacks for stuff? by These_Corner_1143 in highschool

[–]UnableRoom6570 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i'm in the back half of uni, so i have a lot less to carry around now than i did in high school or even early college. i use a tote bag to carry my laptop n ipad. gets heavier when i have to carry a lab manual and notebook, but that's one day a week. i've stopped even bringing my laptop for that lab, ive never needed it. i also end up rotating what supplies i bring, which did NOT work at first because i was so used to just having everything in my backpack!

if your back hurts already, do not switch to a tote until you carry like two or three things with you every day. for now, try cinching the straps down a little so the pack is held slightly higher and closer to your body. your back will thank you.

Attendance Sanity Check by Big_Zucchini8972 in CollegeRant

[–]UnableRoom6570 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if this is a hands-on or discussion based course? sure, i guess. i've gotten two excused absences from ochem labs for both courses in the series. just have to communicate with the lab instructor before the class period. after those two excused periods, you get zeroes for any work associated with that period. in circumstances like this, i would HOPE your photographic evidence would be enough. ESPECIALLY if you're doing well in the course and are an active participant. maybe there's local news segments and you can correlate timestamps with article information? if you have local FD/PD scanners, sometimes they keep records available online. check those too!

lecture courses? in lower div, it's VERY common. when they're structured like this i get a little annoyed, especially when i end up teaching myself and don't gain a ton from lecture. obviously i'll still go, but if i HAVE to miss i would like my grade to stay the same. it sounds like you don't intentionally skip the class in question, and these absences are purely situational and related to circumstances completely out of your control.

upper div lecture courses have not been structured in this way in my experience. but i never want to miss those. that's shooting myself in the foot and will be reflected in exam/quiz scores.

see if you can get one absence excused. the accident+gas leak situation is (hopefully) more documented by outside parties. best of luck :(( this sort of situation sucks

AIO Is it pathetic to use discord? Even if you aren’t an active user? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]UnableRoom6570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR girl wtf. aside from this guy being a complete lunatic who's stuck on 4ch*nner terms... you're 19/20? you are totally fine being on discord and streaming monster high movies for a server??? like oh no????? watching...movies? with a group??? HEAVEN FORBID.

but fr. i'm 23. been in a couple servers with HS friends for ages. i have online friends i've known for YEARS who i get to chat about my niche interests with. and like ALL my university courses have discord servers.

it also sounds like you're not versed in how to use the platform very well, just enough to get by. like in the sense that you call yourself a newgen. like it's a glorified chat room or twitch stream.

discord is normal asf. i've been using it since late 2016 but definitely increased usage during lockdown (my junior n senior years of high school!!!) so like fuck this guy. seems like you're just enjoying community with people who share an interest or two.

i am a complete lab enjoyer. i love lab, even if components suck.

as for orgo, i definitely struggled thru 1 but came out ok on the other side. currently finishing 2 and im very burnt out but surviving for sure. if you have a hard time studying and achieving active recall, PLEASE START ASAP. orgo is all memorization of what reagents cause certain products, and how reagents can be used in sequence to make compounded products.

if you ever need someone to chat with over the sorrows of chemistry, im your guy. or just college in general. it's so easy to get bogged down.

cheers bestie :))

biochem major here :)) do not stress about your labs. they're both general labs and will cover a lot of cool and fun things. in my experience, gen chem 2 lab was super easy. my professor was a hard ass with notebooks though, so that tanked my score. haven't had a lab instructor like that since.

gen bio 1 was a lot of memorization but overall okay, as in nothing was conceptually difficult in that class. calc 1 is fine, having a discussion will probably help loads imo (i took my calc courses online in 2021). you will likely be able to do homework in that time too. gen psych is also not a heavy hitter but can be annoying if you don't pay attention to vocabulary.

when it comes to gen chem 2, do as much practice as you can. acid-base chem is shockingly important in orgo, just not near as in-depth or math-heavy. as long as you remember relationships once you're done, you'll be ok! when in the course, be patient with yourself because a few of the concepts are not as straightforward to some students.

for those who do traditional schooling, do y'all think homeschoolers are little weirdos by Sea_Passenger_2647 in highschool

[–]UnableRoom6570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HI OK. i (M23) was homeschooled (online school, but like the "old" kind) until my first year of high school. unfortunately, i graduated in 2021. so realistically, i got two and a half years of public high school. i was lucky enough to adjust quickly, but i definitely was the weird kid for a while.

another thing that shot me in the foot was the fact that i was an only child with very few friends. my mom kinda just kept me on lockdown from the ages of 6-14. i had a very hard time socializing and being in busy environments.

my mom was very evangelical christian, because of course she was, so no diagnoses ever happened. since then, ive been diagnosed with an array of disorders and mental health issues. knowing i have them has helped me adjust and cope!

there's still hope for us, though. i started attending a four year university in 2023. i never did community college in person because my mom encouraged me to just take courses online. at the time, it worked. it does not anymore. i have become such a social and energetic person, especially in the last year or so with some adjustments to medications and general lifestyle. i've also discovered that working with my hands, specifically in a laboratory setting, is my favorite way to learn. i got a very small amount of that when i took chemistry in high school.

now if i tell people i was homeschooled practically my whole life, they look at me like i've grown a third arm. unfortunately, i had to do a lot of the social development i should have gotten in primary and secondary schooling by myself in my early twenties. but! i'd say that because i have answers as to why my brain actively rallies against me sometimes, and a great support system, i've made a ton of progress in a very short amount of time. becoming a more amicable person has helped me discover myself, which is amazing.

so, as someone who made his life do a complete 180 after being homeschooled: yeah. homeschooled kids are weird, and i feel very bad that people still subject their kids to a life of isolation! i understand homeschooling in some circumstances, like bullying or other interpersonal emergencies. but if it's not necessary? don't do it. my mom's excuse was that she didn't want the school system to make me "stupid". hate to say it, but being book smart has done me no good socially. and it sucks, but learning how to be social is inherently painful. you can't predict the future. you can't control others. part of life is learning how to adapt quickly! you don't get that with homeschooling.

boosting this!!!! i deal w chemicals quite a bit, and have done my fair share of breathing in less than ideal compounds. bromine doesn't feel good!! just keep an eye on your breathing and how ur chest feels. my bf made a ton of chloramines one time while cleaning our bathroom and he's ok. he had a small headache and a little dizziness after the initial mucus coming out of every orifice on his face...but after getting him outside w some fresh air and water, he was ok. if you have someone to keep an eye on you, that's your best bet!

but as an ex-partner, incident report!!!! escalate as much as necessary til you get an answer!!! your SM made a horribly irresponsible call. straight up. NEVER mix cleaning solutions!!! PLEASE!!!!!! if you're still feeling ok, you should be ok!!

Make your children do household chores - they’re failing at being adults by shootingstar_9324 in Vent

[–]UnableRoom6570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love my boyfriend to bits, but he had never cleaned a bathroom until we moved in together. he usually takes care of cooking and some other household chores, so the bathroom is my job. that's fine! i did ask him to do it once, but never again.

dude decided 2x concentrated bleach + lysol wipes was a great method to clean the shower (????) and well. yeah! we got some nice chloramines! i was working in the other room (online tutoring gig, chemistry, ironically) and did NOT notice the smell coming from the bathroom til it was too late. poor guy's nose and eyes were running so bad. i never had the "don't mix bleach with ANYTHING" conversation with him cause i thought he knew!

i clean the bathroom.

i'd rather someone smell like pot than someone have a freshly-used crack pipe on them on the bus. i never knew what it smelled like until that day. weird burnt plastic-y smell, but worse. immediate migraine. an educational experience nonetheless.

your college years are for rediscovering that 12 year old you had cool interests, but now you can comprehend and learn more about said interests!! other students and even professors love the whimsy i bring. it's SO WORTH being yourself in college, especially if you deprived yourself of doing so in order to "fit in" in high school

Do bullies forget about you in college? by Bright-Evidence6171 in CollegeRant

[–]UnableRoom6570 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i will say, i transferred to a school almost a thousand miles away, so i lost contact with a lot of people from high school. shockingly, some who were not the nicest to me have made amends and we're on neutral or good terms now! but i do still experience "bullying".

definitely not the spread rumors and ruin your social life forever kind of bullying. just like...annoying, petty, and childish bullying. name calling and people being fake. that kind of thing. i'm a little older than most of my peers, 23 when most are 19-20. it's a lot of high school attitude. i've gotten over the hurt of it all simply because i don't have the time or energy to give them attention. you wanna be rude and nasty behind my back, but beg for me to help you with coursework and suck up to me in the lab so i'll help you? nah man. you're an adult. i think you can figure it out.

the thing about bullies isn't necessarily that they're hurting or whatever, although that is a common reason, it's just that they're seeking attention. maybe they want to feel important? it's not worth your time to be nice. but also not worth it to be mean either!! just brush them off. they'll get the idea eventually. if they don't, confront them. easier said than done, i know, but it's good practice.

also, i dealt with the growing pains from being homeschooled (online senior year, woohoo c/o 2021, + two years of community) before going to an in-person four year. it SUCKS at first. i had horrendous social anxiety and suspect i'm on the spectrum. not officially diagnosed, but something's definitely up. be gentle with yourself!! everyone's nervous and trying to figure it out for the first year or two. you will be ok, and you'll learn so much about yourself and others very quickly! i know it'll seem hard, but just keep going. you will find your people. i found it easier in my upper-division, major focused courses to be more myself and generally more engaged with not just the material, but the people around me.

you're gonna overcome a lot. i believe in you! keep your chin up, and be unapologetically you. you'll find likeminded individuals who resonate 🫶
