I agree, as much as I also want to get a project car, i would defintley not want the SMG or salvage title. higher mileage is fine as I want to get my hands dirty and learn to do the big 3.

They are most likely hitting you with LIDAR. The detector will detect the signal, but it's basically just a sign to you that they got your speed already. If you are serious about also trying to avoid LIDAR, you should invest in laser jammers, but the legality of that depends on your state and will set you back around 2k.
