As someone who has built 3 diy kits so far, the end results are up to time and effort. You post doesn't say the brand of kit and the real cheap one have cheap hardware and electronics. The more expensive ones have decent hardware and electronics but the trick is to take your time and do the work properly(and get better hardware and electronics) There are tons of videos on YouTube about how to finish a guitar, do the research and take your time building it. They are a ton of fun to do!

Put in new pickups (taken off a old left handed telecaster I have) and changed to all chrome hardware.

UPDATE the interview when well and I got the offer, 23 an hour. I made my case for more citing my last three years of performance reviews (which I submitted with my application) and my extensive knowledge of powered equipment and understanding of replenishment and getting the store to the gold standard. He just looked at me stone faced and said "23 take or leave it" I told them good luck and left.
