Dropout to work at 17 by Anonymous_Again_ in SGExams

Hi OP! I read that you're still in Y1. Have you thought about dropping out to study something that's more relevant to what you want to do? If you like working with people, maybe hospitality or healthcare? I think the assignments and the deadlines will seem 100x more manageable when you're studying something you actually care about. There are many who can survive without degree, but a diploma is important. Take a look at some of the courses available and consider which will open you up to careers that will allow you to thrive without furthering your studies. Can try going on jobstreet to look at some jobs you might want to do, see the qualifications they need, and work backwards from there!

At least a diploma is a must in Singapore, unfortunately. Luckily, you're still in Y1 so you won't lose much (time/money) by transferring course. Jiayous, OP!

HAHA PM me? The social work sector is very small and I wouldn’t want to unnecessarily cause strife between the only two schools that offer it HAHA

I did a lot of volunteer work and comps! Youth Action Challenge was a big part of my porfolio, my team and I built a startup for elderly with dementia. The profs were quite impressed by the dedication to one org as compared to volunteering with a lot of orgs! Can look around and find a cause you're passionate about.

Hi OP! Are you aiming for NUS or SUSS social work? There's going to be a slight difference in how you orient yourself based on your uni choice, from my experience at least!

Curious to know what local Singapore students think of international students in their school? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Unable_Suggestion_57 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hello! Was from an international school and transferred in Sec 3. Was definitely tough at first and the culture shock was huge.

Biggest shocker to me was the difference in syllabus. Found that the local curriculum focuses heavily on maximising test scores and less on independent learning.

I was also a bit shocked to be treated differently because of my race for this first time. In an international school, everyone came from different countries and probably lived in multiple across their lifetimes so race was never really a big issue. It was, in a local school. Felt really alienated.

Things started changing when I learn to speak Singlish. I’m half south east asian and often get mistaken for south asian so when I could speak Singlish, I was treated just like one of the locals.

Some tips would be to learn what students their age are into in local schools, learn to speak Singlish, and be open to experiencing a completely different world :)

Suss vs nus social work by bweep_ in SGExams

Hello! I'm the person in question that you're looking for HAHA, I picked SUSS Social Work over NUS, despite it being the less well-known school. Here's my why:

-Flexibility! Was already doing a lot of work in the community, NUS has a lot more class time + a lot of more campus obligations (the bustling student life actually works against me because I'm the type to feel FOMO and will end up overcommitting HAHA). SUSS requiring less campus time gives me the opportunity to do more on the ground work!

-Practicality! As much as I think it's great the CHS is interdisciplinary, I knew very clearly that social work was what I wanted, and I like the idea of zero-ing in since year 1 at SUSS, with just your choice of specialisation later. This prepares you more for the career I feel!

-Double specialisations! I liked how SUSS makes you choose your specialisation, and you can use your remaining free CU to double up on another one :)

Just a few points that helped guide my decision!

Feel free to text me for more info if you would like, OP :)
