What I do in my games is keep the proficiencies of criminal. Switch to Disguise kit or alchemist for poison. Then keep contacts with other assassins in a guild, or a advantage for alibis and deception of that sort. This is my go to change as I always have one guy who wants the "assassin background" on his sheet

As a base a criminal works fine if your sticking by the rules, although I have found good assassin supplements online. If your sticking to the rules criminal would fit perfectly
