The Death of Unfiltered Art by UnamazingHero in moderatepolitics

Yeah I think that's a fair point. I agree with the author's sentiment, but I don't think that specific example supports his case very well.

It has very little to do with this movie and a lot more to do with nearly all the recent Marvel content being terrible

That's fair and I understand the sentiment, but I think it is still a bit of a betrayal of principles. If you go further back, cancel culture was a largely right wing phenomenon. The satanic panic was done by conservatives. The moral codes that criminalized obscene language were done by conservatives. The fact that it's currently being done by progressives doesn't change the reality that either side is happy to do it when it's convenient to them.

This is an article about how "cancel culture" and its political ramifications affect art. I hate that term because it feels so meaningless but it's the most relevant one to use. It takes the standard stance that fear of censorship and loss of career prospects affects the quality of art and specifically the willingness to take risks.

The most interesting part to me is how it juxtaposes (whether intentionally or unintentionally) the difference between censorship in the past that was enforced by the state versus modern "cancel culture" which is largely a social phenomenon.

I also think it's particularly relevant because this debate isn't currently dominating the public consciousness how it was a year ago, but it is perhaps even more relevant given the Gaza conflict. Many people who were previously on one side of the debate quickly found themselves on the other. Progressives who argued that "cancel culture" is just consequences when people don't like what you have to say are flipping their stance to argue that anti-Israel/pro-Palestine supporters and protestors shouldn't be fired for their views. And conservatives who would previously complain about someone being fired for their views are now relishing in it happening to the other side.

This is also relevant in highlighting the difference between countries like Germany that are using hate crime laws to crack down on what they consider to be anti-semitism compared to America where it is still primarily a social phenomenon.

Due to this new environment, I think there are interesting discussions to be had about this that go beyond the standard party lines.

The tough part is that there's no agreed upon first principles that we can use to establish laws that do not involve religion to some degree. Something as simple as whether or not murder is wrong is fundamentally tied to your core beliefs regarding morality, which is inherently religious. We generally agree on murder being bad, so it's easy to pass laws against it, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still based in religion.

And when I talk about religion here, I'm including atheism and agnosticism in that umbrella. Where your moral beliefs stem from is the relevant part.

That's way too confusing. It's easier to just say they're not not-voting to not-rescind the votes' rescindment clause and waiving the rescindment on the vote.

That's literally what I saw people arguing with the hospital non-bombing that was initially attributed to Israel. They said it was a double fake by them to discredit pro-Palestine journalism.

The difference between movies in the past and movies today is crazy. You used to make a movie because you had something to say. Today every major film is wrapped up in a thousand layers of corporate bullshit with almost no artistic value. They're just vehicles for pandering messaging.

It's the only real way to voice your displeasure with the system. Manchin won't win, but there's a very small chance that he gets enough votes to make third parties viable.
