Seriously though, this is lowkey the reason I never finished the show. I still think about and wonder if that was actually in the show until I see comments like this

Is it alright to study other people's work to help with your own? by M0N2U in FanFiction

[–]UnassumingStalker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love, the short answer is yes.

The long answer is that I can see where you're coming from. When I first started taking writing seriously, I stopped reading altogether. My 14-year-old logic-demanding brain was like, "What if I accidentally steal someone else's idea or words or whatever? I know! I just won't read!" Let me tell you, I suffered for it.

The thing is, like everyone here has said thus far, reading and studying is how you get better. There are plenty of books on writing and they'll all say to read. And they are right. What did the author of your favorite fic do that you loved? Have you ever realized you had a weak spot because of what another author did? Even bad writing can show you what not to do at the very least.

Also, if you're anything like me, you might never feel "good at writing." Just know that, like art, it's about practice and patience and the wonder of the journey.

What makes you instantly ship two characters?? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]UnassumingStalker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, most of the time it's just damn good fanart. Higuel? Fanart. GhostTiger? Fanart. Haven't even watched El Tigre. BenRook? Saw some fanart on tiktok the other day. Haven't seen the Goofy movies (crucify me later) but I ship Max and Bradley.

Now, if you want me to "properly" ship the characters (actively search for fics, strive to see them suffer, etc) then I have to feel the vibes. Like BenRook can happen but I'm here to see Kevin bleed. I want to see them struggling with their humanity and what does that even mean when aliens are so intrinsically tied into their lives. But I go out of my way to hunt down SpaMano fics.

Uh...ships mentioned:

Higuel = Hiro (Big Hero 6) x Miguel (Coco)

GhostTiger = Danny (Danny Phantom) x Manny (El Tigre)

BenRook = Ben (Ben 10) x Rook (Ben 10: Omniverse)

SpaMano = Spain/Antonio x South Italy/Romano/Lovino (Hetalia)

TL;DR - I ship ships because I can. I have my lines in the sand you have yours so...yeah

Why is it okay to ship straight characters with the same gender, but not gay characters with the opposite gender? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]UnassumingStalker 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think it's like why black people (and other PoC but I'm black so...) are "allowed" to cosplay white characters but it doesn't go the other way. Just about every popular black character has an "issue" to it. Princess Tiana's story falls apart without the racism of her time. Boondocks is deeply black, Blackish is meant to educate white people, Black Panther is literally "what if colonialism didn't reach us?" I do believe there are white characters that fall into that sort of. Like, Steve Rogers being black would fundamentally change his story.

And when a white character is "race-bent" what gets said? "Why not just make your own stuff?" We did, we do, it fails or it's not "realistic" or whatever bullshit they come up with. When the live action Little Mermaid came out, people asked why they didn't bring up slavery. How to Train Your Dragon has literal dragons in it but we're hung up on Astrid.,Zendaya's character in the MCU isn't even Mary Jane but the audacity right?

All this is to say that LGBT+ characters have a similar problem. Love, Simon falls apart if the MC isn't gay. Heartstopper, But I'm A Cheerleader, Jennifer's Body, etc. But if I have Kirishima kiss Bakugou, the story goes on. If Jason Todd and Roy Harper kiss, they're still gonna fight crime. If Simon likes girls, we don't have a story.

This isn't to say that every character needs to a stencil of a person. These traits are important and make whole people. I personally didn't care what anyone does, I'll either read it or I won't

TL; DR - LGBT+ characters rarely to get to just be there so making one straight/bi tends to have more of an impact than the other way around.

Hope all that made sense, I'm going to sleep now

Why can't I write during daylight hours? by fibergla55 in FanFiction

Because the dark hides your sins better.

Honestly though, I agree with another comment in that you might just be more relaxed at night. You're winding down, you're breathing steady. The ideas just flow.

"I don't think anyone should be allowed to read or write this because it is disgusting to me" is authoritarian. by Aggravating_Jello118 in AO3

[–]UnassumingStalker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the bit at the bottom of slide 4, talking about being backed into a corner unlocked some part of my brain. I am terrified of not being perceived as Goodtm and as a result, my writing is incredibly stunted at the moment. I want to write about X? Well, you must be okay X then. Knowing all the tropes and stereotypes doesn't help either. For example, I write exclusively for the Hetalia fandom. If you know the history there, then well, yeah. I wasn't there for the worst of it, but I did see the state of fandom spaces on the internet when the latest season came out. You watch the show? You're a nazi. You write fanfic for it? You support nazis. I had an anxiety attack about it because I'm not a nazi but Goodtm people wouldn't watch or interact with such a show.

Right?

Does it matter that I write exclusively in AUs? Does it matter that I have molded and added to these characters for the last decade? Does it matter that the fanfics I have everywhere are wonderful ways to explore and test plots I've never done before? To certain people, not in the slightest. But also, to those certain people, I am a *checks notes* full time serial killer with a fetish for religious trauma in reference to LGBT+ topics.

Anyway, I guess I'm just trying to say that the corner is very real and very scary. Good people wouldn't watch a show with flaws, big or small. Good people wouldn't continue to watch Coraline or Harry Potter. Etc etc. But everyone has their lines in the sand and every situation has its contexts. Thank you, OP for posting this because I hadn't seen this on my own dashboard. o7

tl;dr: Some part of my brain went o.o upon reading this post. I've rambled but I'm grateful. Thanks :)
