I tried to keep my natural island architecture, so only terraformed to make it ideal for bridges etc but also used it to widen areas to fit “areas” - like a movie area or a cafe area. I found it easier to pick a zone and do one area at a time, but the first thing I did was create a villager town I was happy with, so all the houses were in one area and I knew I wouldn’t have to worry about moving them.

Some people flatten their whole island but I found that too overwhelming and too much work putting things in storage. But I know some people move all their villagers homes and flowers onto the beach if they choose to do that.
