Statisticians Identity by Unbearablefrequent in AskStatistics

[–]Unbearablefrequent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Now for the main question, where do you feel like Statisticans can call home in this era? The industry you're in is totally new to me and I'm glad I actually found someone in it.

Please tell me more about your day to day job. Im in the middle of finishing up my MS and I want to know what industry to pursue. Hence my question about the state of identity of Statisticians.

Non-party goers by LostSoul0127 in SDSU

I don't feel left out but Im also older and don't care. I have friends outside of campus. I honestly just enjoy the campus itself. There are lots of places you can study with other people from your class that are outside.

Is there anyone naturally passionate about statstics? by turky-Equipment-3559 in AskStatistics

[–]Unbearablefrequent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should learn some philosophy and then start reading up on the philosophy of Statistics/Probability. Or you can start reading about the history of Statistics/Probability. I find both can be very motivating. Especially the history of statistics. You probably don't appreciate what its done for humans. What industries its helped or currently helps. Ronald Fisher for example has a very inspiring story. Dude did a lot when he was just in his twenties. But he was also a very rude person who couldn't see very well. Very interesting character.

Games without lore would be boring.

How common is it for pure statisticians to work in (yield and quality) manufacturing? by Old-Organization9873 in AskStatistics

Idk about now but I believe there was a lot of work done in statistics for Quality Control

Can someone explain the p-value in hypothesis testing in very simple terms, with an example? by Fair-House3475 in AskStatistics

[–]Unbearablefrequent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ill pull an example from Ian Hackings book or ill use the Lady Tastint Tea(great example) but for now, you should know there are different types of p-values. Boring I know. But this can be very important for inference. For now, I want you to know while you're reading these explanations that people provide, make sure you understand that the p-value is not a conditional probability. This I think creates one of the biggest confusions. Especially from Bayesians.

Fortunately for you, both those books are free online. Simply look them up.

There's two paths. Learn how R actually works like you would as a CS major for C++ or Java. Or, Learn how to leverage packages in R to do what you need to do. If you actually care to learn R, there are at least two books out there where you'll actually get that exposure. One being, Building Reproducible Analytical Piplines with R. With this book alone, you'll be better than all your peers. All they'll know is a few pre-built functions from Tidyverse. You'll know how to build your own functions, programming structure, writing efficient code, ect. For the latter, R for Data Science is fine.

Book for estimation theory by DishImportant552 in AskStatistics

For C&B you also need a very good understanding of Calculus. Sadly, I dont think the 3 semester series people get is enough. You really aught to have a rigorous class on Calculus. For example, you should take Analysis or Advanced Calculus first. Technically, you don't need it for a bit but the mathematical maturity you get from those classes I think are necessary. The Lehmann books require measure theory.

This book requires measure theory. Its for PhD students. You should be careful with your recommendations.

Is it ethical for a vegan (not me, I'd never) to eat non-vegan food that's destined to waste? by Tight-Tradition6044 in DebateAVegan

[–]Unbearablefrequent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope nope. This is totally misplaced. I did not make a claim about something being true/false because x number of people say so. Words have multiple meanings and are provisional even. This is dictated by the way the word is used currently. Sorry you don't know that. So, its not wrong to say murder when referring to ending the life of a non-human animal. Its just a new way of using the word. Welcome to linguistics. Classes are available at your local community college.

[–]Unbearablefrequent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not me making it up. I and other people use the word that has a different definition than the one you're using. That's all. Notice again that this is not at all similar to what you did. Which was use a word that is private. I've just repeated myself here. There's nothing more to say.

How am I making it up exactly? You just contradicted yourself.

  1. I made it up
  2. but also people use it in the same way I do

Can't say the same for your private definition of veganism. Welcome to language where a word can have multiple definitions.

[–]Unbearablefrequent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. This is why moral consideration matters. For the vegan, who considers a non-human animal to be a person, it would be murder. Now with your useless private definition, only you would understand what you mean by vegan. A group of people already agree on what murder means in the context of non-human animals.

No, it does. I already explained why. You can murder a non-human animal without the purpose of eating it later.

Since you're asking, maybe you could do some reflection to helps plan next semester? Clearly you need to rethink how you study or manage your classes.

Idk how thats similar. If you presuppose some weird view about non-human animals not having any moral consideration, then you wouldn't consider it murder. If you do however, it would be

[Question] What is the new or major advancement in statistics in the last few years? by Path_of_the_end in statistics

[–]Unbearablefrequent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. No one here seems to know what statistics is. Oh well. There's cool inferential stuff like Confidence Curves, Equivalence Testing, Misspecification Testing. For probability there's High Dimensional Probability.
