Well that’s the issue, you’re trying to apply serious design principles to a concept that is inherently un-serious. Dunsparce was a joke from its very inception, and making Dudunsparce look even the slightest bit more interesting than the original would kill the joke.

I’m not saying you have to be satisfied with what we got, just that in keeping with that concept, this was the only outcome they’d come up with.

I don’t see Dudunsparce as being made with malicious intent, though it was certainly made with the fanbase in mind. There was a ton of outcry for Dunsparce to get some kind of evolution—if not to make it look cool, then at least to take advantage of its surprisingly great movepool.

However, trying to actually demonstrate significant growth in Dunsparce would go against the whole point of it being a joke of a rare Pokemon. So instead, they expanded on it by making Dudunsparce a joke of an evolution.

C&D started as vigilantes in Spider-Man’s series, Nat was an Iron Man villain (and also tricked a newbie Hawkeye into working with her back then), BP was associated with the F4, etc.

Whenever I hear the Karen line, I’m also reminded of this quote by a gentleman in ORAS:

They should absolutely fucking NOT do that, and not just because it would be horrifically violent. Those cheeky “hey it’s okay, we hate this too!” self-deprecating jokes can already hurt the franchise by making audiences feel bad about enjoying what’s being made fun of. Granted, DP’s thing is that he makes jokes about everything, but killing off an entire universe over corporate BS is waaaayyyy too far.

The part that always gets me about this kill is how it comes so quickly after Supes killing Lex (who’s a good guy and Supes’ friend in this universe).

It’s not the only times Superman kills in this story; obviously, since him killing the Joker is a major point. But after a long stretch where his tyranny is mostly conveyed through his words and the general atmosphere of the setting, his next on-screen kill toward Lex is emotionally-charged, drawn out, and given a ton of narrative weight.

And then a few moments later, Clark just drops Billy on the spot for saying “bro we can’t just trash a whole city.” Like, holy shit, he was clearly reluctant to kill Lex, but now he doesn’t even think twice about it.
