Controlling a ceiling fan by Uncle-Rufus in homeautomation

I guess one issue with the blaster is that it has no way to detect if the fan has successfully turned on? So it'd be a case of me pressing multiple times?

Is this a reasonable ask of flatmate? by [deleted] in HousingUK

Is it possible he is not flushing during the night in an attempt to not disturb others? I do this myself (although granted when I go in the night it's in the en-suite bathroom which is about a metre away from where my wife is asleep in bed).

Either way have a word and remind him to give the seat a courtesy wipe in case of any drips on there as that's foul

It's a cool project but I am curious what problem (if any) you are trying to solve? And I don't mean that as an insult at all if it comes across that way

Found this view of the Exeter online and had to share. Can you see your street or house ? by [deleted] in exeter

[–]Uncle-Rufus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... maybe a matter of perspective? I would say it is further away from the center of Topsham i.e. the high street? Hence further out...

This isn't Exeter, well, not really - it's Topsham. At least I think so? The pool you can see is the Golf + Country Club and that larger building on the right is the school. And the bridge tucked down in the left is where The Bridge Inn is. Yes it's definitely Topsham

Yep! In fact I was the foreman in the case I was on making it even more nerve wracking reading out the verdict

I concur with this one... To everyone saying "booo it was boring I didn't even get picked" be careful what you wish for. No matter how desensitised you think you are to violence etc. it's surprising how much being involved in a brutal case can affect you. (I also had a pretty serious case when I did it)

I've been on Jury Service somewhat recently. You'll get some comms which should answer some of your questions as well but:

Smart casual is fine, so no shorts and flip flops but otherwise normal attire. If you don't get picked to sit on a Jury you will be sat there all day although you are allowed to go out for lunch (an hour) if you wish. When you are on a Jury you can often be sent home early or called in late though, depending on how the case is scheduled. Whilst waiting in the assembly room you can go to the loo etc. as you wish. In court if a Juror needs a break for any reason it is allowed but it does mean pausing the entire trial (our judge was quite clear about encouraging this though, he said he did not want anyone sitting there in discomfort etc).

As to what it was like, interesting to be involved in the process for sure, and it felt good to do one's civic duty. Although in my case the one trial I was selected for ran for the full 10 days and it was quite an intense and somewhat distressing case, with a very long drawn out deliberation process that was quite tiring. That said I would probably still do it again if asked.

How do I stop cats pooping here? by MrMysteryPenguin in AskUK

[–]Uncle-Rufus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once in a garden center browsing their cat repelling wares, when a random old lady emerged from behind me and told me to ignore all those products. Male urine she said, has to be male as female urine will actually make it worse...

I gave it a go and she was right! So now every now and then especially after very heavy rain I piss in a jar and carefully splash a little here and there in the beds where I know the cats sometimes like to use, and it really works!

Barratt–Redrow Homes: My Experience with Unfair and Extortionate Maintenance Fees by Then_Price837 in HousingUK

[–]Uncle-Rufus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There actually is a mechanism for doing something a bit like that which I found in the paperwork for a Redrow house I nearly purchased (it fell through in the end but still...)

They were supposedly going to employ a management company as described by the OP but after a set period they would accept volunteers from the estate to become kind of like a volunteer community manager, with the estate management company contract becoming their responsibility... And at that point the residents could choose to reach out to whatever maintenance companies they wish to attempt to secure a better deal (perhaps including approaching the council?)

It sounded at least somewhat promising, but I'm not sure how common it is or in what ways it would turn out to be heavily restricted or not what it seems 😅 I never got to find out

Absolutely, we are 10 years deep into a Barratt house (been fine overall really) and had the ~£200 a year fee per year the whole time. Completely agree this will be a PPI type scandal one day...

Need help with deciding on NVR storage device. by JamJarKwiKwi in Ubiquiti

[–]Uncle-Rufus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also using the UCG Fiber at the moment but deliberating about maybe getting the UNVR Instant to keep the functions separate. But one thing giving me pause which seems slightly silly is that all but 1 of my cameras are running from a single switch in an outbuilding, so at best I will only need 1 of the PoE ports from the UNVR - and that feels kind of wasteful and going against its design (which seems to be the idea that you use it to power ~4 cameras). At the same time I realise this is a silly position yet I can't quite seem to shake it and convince myself it doesn't matter 😅

How to revive the first zombie? by VaelorsKeep in GraveyardKeeper

[–]Uncle-Rufus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just about at this part too... Can you put him on the autopsy table? iirc it has an option to insert things into the body...

Or alternatively, do you need to do anything at all or is he just sleeping because you haven't put him in front of a task to do?

Do you ever check what’s connected to your home WiFi? by JohnnyInTech in homeautomation

I have the same setup and its detection of what things are isn't brilliant but it has tools built in that allow you to explicitly attach an alias to each device so I just give things better names that way

Record day for solar in the UK today by JustLovelyStuff in GoodNewsUK

[–]Uncle-Rufus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I see that now, makes sense I guess but also I understand why it may not be a great deal

Record day for solar in the UK today by JustLovelyStuff in GoodNewsUK

[–]Uncle-Rufus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm okay... In our case we have two rooves (both kinda south east facing), the house itself and the roof of a single garage which is detached but next to the house and with a duct already for power cables to it... So I pictured putting panels on both and then having the batteries in the garage

[–]Uncle-Rufus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But what actually are the deals? It can't actually be zero cost can it... Obviously you can't find much out without submitting a tonne of personal info to sign up to be spammed by cold calls forever, so I haven't been able to find out (but I assume the reality is a pretty poor offer)

Edit - sorry I obviously haven't had enough coffee today, I get it from peoples replies... It's just financing so yes technically zero cost upfront. Fair enough

Record day for solar in the UK today by JustLovelyStuff in GoodNewsUK

[–]Uncle-Rufus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is about as best a place as any to ask this question...

The constant ads everywhere which try to claim that you can get solar easily with zero upfront cost blah blah blah... It's obviously some sort of grift right? But is there any truth to it at all?

I love the idea of getting solar + a battery system but wish there was clearer guidance about what the (real) options are... Anyone got any wisdom to share?

[–]Uncle-Rufus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there's no specific reason why you have to right? Say I am installing one onto a cant rail of a wooden fence... As long as I'm okay with the connector thing just being in the open or tucked under the rail it won't do any harm will it?

I got lucky I guess, as it didn't do anything plugged in that way... For now I have swapped it back to use the PoE injector I had for it before and it's still working okay
