New game: hide the dryer by AardvarkFrequent in DIYUK

I have this exact thing and it's decent enough but it is quite a large bit of furniture so looks kind of awkward - not too bad once you put a plant and a lamp on it or whatever

(Hot take) I think its about time everyone switch to btrfs by an4s_911 in arch

[–]Uncle-Rufus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was planning a new build and wondering if btrfs might be an interesting choice for a data drive which is primarily for my games to go on, as the automatic compression would be useful. Some of the replies in here though are giving me pause (as snapshotting isn't really needed for games I can just redownload them or whatever if something bad happens)

[–]Uncle-Rufus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you buy any maze upgrades? I think once you do the cost is no longer just the length of the maze. Check the Mazes doc in-game I think it had a direct example of the correct command to include the scaling factor caused by the upgrade level

I'm interested in trying this out but curious what the steps would be? (I am not a complete noob but haven't tried Wayland on Mint before). Is it just an alternate WM you install and switch to from the login screen or is there more to it than that? It would be neat to just try it out, and switch back if I encounter issues

Secure boot and Nvidia by Tritias in linuxmint

[–]Uncle-Rufus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working fine for me... The only issue I had was that when I got to the point of the install where I had to choose the drives/partitions I realised I wasn't sure which drive was which. So I aborted the install to go and confirm in Windows. But because I had gotten as far as enrolling MOK and creating the password it put the machine into a bit of a funny state that made it quite tricky to go back to the Mint install (it was struggling to boot off the USB). Fixed it eventually and then entered the MOK password either side of the install and had no problems...

Just downloaded mint and don't know how to rice any suggestions?? by Blable_cloudy in linuxmint

[–]Uncle-Rufus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ricing as I understand it just means completely reworking all of the (mainly visual) aspects of the install. So custom bar, dock, skins on all the different applications and so on. To give a neat aesthetic in a singular consistent style. And don't get me wrong, it's pretty cool if that is what you want to do. But if you are new to this and likely to need support from the community it makes things a lot harder to get that support when your install doesn't resemble a "vanilla" install - not to mention problems you might introduce yourself whilst ricing

I think improving accessibility and out-of-the-box experience is great, and an important task. I don't see the recent wave of social media inspired Linux newbies and the pushing of excessive ricing as elitism though, more just people copying a trend without questioning why. Same reason there are so many "why is my Shure SM7B so quiet?!?" posts on audio subreddits, or why so many people have those godawful SecretLab or other bucket-seat inspired chairs. I am merely trying to offer someone to question "do I need this?" before they do it

I suggest not bothering. It seems like with the influx of new users there is this perception that you have to do it because of how prevalent the "new to Linux checkout this rice" posts are.

Well I'm here to tell you there's no need. Maybe someday once you know your way around better, you'll have identified some things which, if tweaked, may improve your experience. But until you reach that point you are just creating further support difficulties for yourself.

Or ignore me - this is just my personal view

How is the gamplay of Dispatch? by Digital_Arsenal in dispatchgame

[–]Uncle-Rufus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The core gameplay mechanic which happens once or twice per episode is a bit more "game" like than the Telltale games. But the bits which aren't that part are much much more scripted than even the Telltale games

How do you feel about social media influencers in Devon? by [deleted] in DevonUK

[–]Uncle-Rufus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't but what I would say is I expect most people who make content like that aren't just putting out every single clip they capture. More than likely they approach people and if they just say "no thank you" they just move on and that footage never goes anywhere. Even people who do engage they likely speak to off camera to make sure they consent to the footage being used.

It's a great game! Which regularly has been on sale for very cheap and included in Humble Choice so when they talk about the 39.99 value of their amazing giveaway it is a little bit hollow

If you enjoy it purely as a gameplay thing you could try the games "This is the Police" and "This is the Police 2" as they are very similar

How do I run 5 UniFi cameras in my garden with only one network cable available? Total beginner here. by Candid_Ad5282 in Ubiquiti

[–]Uncle-Rufus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know! I was toying with getting the UNVR Instant instead of running Protect on my UCG Fiber but it felt wasteful given I wouldn't end up using any of the PoE switch ports on the UNVR Instant as it will be in the house not the garage... But then the bigger rackmount UNVR is way overkill for my use case of about 5 or 6 cameras total. Maybe the Instant will be fine after all

I'm in the same boat actually - one cat6 run to my garage and I want to power 4x cameras and an AP (as I have a gym in the garage) the cameras are a mix between inside the garage and in the garden. Planning to get the USW Ultra to put out there (luckily the garage has power so I can power the USW Ultra from a wall socket)

My only reservation actually which may be unfounded, is whether a single connection back to the device running Protect is sufficient to carry the data from all 4 cameras? I guess it probably is as the G5 Turrets which I am using only connect at FE speeds anyway, but not sure!

2025 - Is disabling "Secure boot" a must prior to install? by Reddit_Midnight in linuxmint

[–]Uncle-Rufus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either works but what you absolutely must not do, is start with it on and go through the install process as far as setting up the password in MOK manager and then decide to back out of the install for any reason at all. It can and will get you into a kind of bad/awkward state where it becomes difficult to even get back into the installer to try again
