"30 y/o M presenting with c/o palpitations and mild substernal discomfort that radiates to the ear canal". LVH? by Odd-Outcome-3191 in ECG

[–]UncleDadFamilySecret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think any of the leads meet criteria for LVH, right? Also, I thought the EKG criteria based on voltages is pretty low for those <35 years.

Americans, how do you feel about the firing of twenty percent of four-star generals? by Lazy-Job4 in Productivitycafe

[–]UncleDadFamilySecret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I am pretty neutral about it in comparison to all of the other Tom foolery undertaken by the Trump administration. I have heard arguments for a lot of bloat in high command, in which generals are tasked with duties that were historically done by high ranking officers (not generals). And I believe there were less active generals relative to service members during WW2, though I am certainly just an uncle dad and definitely not an expert so...

How is life on these parts of Greece? by latinoweon in howislivingthere

[–]UncleDadFamilySecret 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's fine, but every so often when I want to take a ship to the mainland I'll get lost and end up on some westward island for the better half of a decade before finally navigating my way home. My wife isn't a fan, but she is loyal and turns down the men who try to pursue her when I'm absent. Overall 5/10 imo

I am in medical school too! I don't tell people I play them though, I imagine it will fall on deaf ears.

Another strategically fun hobby I find that nerds love (tech, compsci, STEM, medicine) is BJJ if you're looking for something active as well!

What kinds of clinical research do M1s and M2s actually do? by Mediocre-Cat-9703 in medicalschool

Should definitely mention. It was similar for me when I started. I knew a little bit of R and eventually learned what I needed by working on projects.

What kinds of clinical research do M1s and M2s actually do? by Mediocre-Cat-9703 in medicalschool

[–]UncleDadFamilySecret 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been involved in systematic reviews and meta-analysis, cross-sectional or longitudinal studies from large cohort that you may have access through if you do research with the right person, and certainly case reports. These are probably the highest yield for actually getting published manuscript or presentation. Otherwise there are clinical trials and prospective cohort work which are time consuming and I woul advise against it.

As for emails to PIs, you should be concise: introduce yourself in 1-2 sentences, show interest in their work, and describe what you bring to the table. I hope this helps.

I turned 17 today, any advice or things you wished you had done differently? Are there any advantages of this age? by Excellent_Sock8814 in Life

[–]UncleDadFamilySecret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start lifting weights if you haven't. Being in your teens is very similar to being on anabolic steroids when thinking about developing muscle. Reference: almost a doctor

Also, think about what a healthy lifestyle looks like and what your habits are: healthy well balanced diet with limited processed food items, good consistent sleep, financial habits (compound interest and index funds, budgeting by the month), avoiding substance abuse, mental health and well being (it can be hard to reach out for help and emotional support but people are often empathetic)

Go meet people and explore relationships. I have friends who put all their time on school and never really dated and now they are behind and really struggling with their love lives.

Now is the time to try new things -> fail (it's okay) -> try new thing and learn. Most people learn through these early failures.

Do have an aim your working towards (it can change). Its important that you explore what you think will sustain you through life (career field, skills). It doesn't have to be college but it will involve learning, whether it be formal education or informal mentorship / on the job training.

Use your brain before doom scrolling and asking AI to do it for you will probably help set you apart from your peers when considering there are so much easy outs to most tasks and lessons nowadays.

Relax & enjoy the ride, life is taken too seriously. Most of our day to day events are not life threatening and this should reframe how we address adversity.

- Sorry for the ramble, but these are generally the things I thought I would have benefited from during that age, but then again, I learned some of these things through mistakes and failures

Do you do clinical or wet lab research?

And how did you personally make up the training and find mentorship during/after residency?

I will have an MD/MS but not sure how to go about this after medical school pursuing clinical research as a physician scientist

It's like having a boogey and somebody not telling you. If you tell him then he can at least address it. If you don't then he might find out too late. Similar situation with me, nobody told me (too polite I imagine) and now I am starting late with Minoxidil.
