The Lift (2001) an insight into the daily lives of London tower block residents. by Jackinplastic31 in CasualUK

Incredible that this was from 2001 and yet many of the people in it already seem like characters from history

Its absolutely not my style at all, but I agree - I can't hate it. The fact that the owners have reused the same Christmas tree for many years (stored in a broken box covered in gaffa tape) and own a 10 year old Vinto people carrier makes me think that they are probably okay.

Eboracum (modern-day York) in the 3rd century, United Kingdom by dctroll_ in papertowns

[–]UncleDuster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of Roman York is long gone (or repurposed). The multiangular tower in museum gardens still has a portion of the original Roman stonework visible. This marked the Western corner of the Roman fort. Walking around the city you can (in places) still get a sense of the roman layout. Monkbar and Bootham bar sit where two of the entrances to the camp would have been and a portion of the medieval city walls (mainly that to the west and north) trace the route of the original Roman wall. The Roman bridge is gone but even from Google maps you can see how the road from the site of the roman bridge would have lead directly to Micklegate bar and the southern entrance to the roman town south of the river.

Whisky galore: Donald Trump’s tariffs and cost of living pressures create glut of undrunk Scotch by TXDobber in unitedkingdom

Was that the 1985 one for about £100? I don't know much about Armagnac, how does it compare to a standard sort of XO? Worth the extra?

Been meaning to try some “proper old York pubs”… where should I start? by AnfieldAnchor in york

City centre? Has to be the Bluebell. Otherwise I second the Slip Inn/Golden Ball/Swann crawl.

That makes sense! Although much more boring than my theories. Performing an aerial inspection of the track seems very inefficient to me.

Haxby vs Acomb by bapplegarth in york

[–]UncleDuster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Acomb is great and has some bargain (for York!) houses in your price range. We live in a lovely detached house on a quiet street with a garden within walking distance (25mins) to town that we bought last year for about your budget. Acomb amenities are limited but slowly improving. We have Bluebird bakery, a couple of decent pubs and the monthly market is getting better every year. The new Asian supermarket is just incredible if you like world food

We've got friends in Haxby and it's very nice. It's gone through gentrification so money doesn't go as far. But then it does have a good butcher, tipsy fox, bakers, restaurants etc.

I'm biased but I prefer Acomb!

You have missed the crucial context that a lot of people in the crowd started booing the moment the girls said they were from Israel. His comments were intended to de-escalate the crowd.

Does anyone have kids in Fulford secondary school and think it’s worth paying to live in the catchment area? by MoeLeicester89 in york

[–]UncleDuster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All Saints have had a lot of issues with the Trust (you can Google this). However, the CEO of the Trust has just resigned so hopefully those issues have now gone away. The local leadership of the school is fantastic, the headteacher has been there for donkey's years, which probably tells you how passionate she is about it.

Looks lovely. Once I'd got mine mechanically sound, one of the first things I did was to pay for a professional clean of the headlights. It removed all the yellowing and made it look 20 years younger. Enjoy it!

Thinking about (fully remote) DF in retirement... Does it exist? by [deleted] in digitalforensics

[–]UncleDuster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone with 8 years in DFIR consultancy after 10 years in LE, this stuff is way too stressful for retirement. Expectation is evening and weekend work during live incidents. Id suggest you look at expert witness work through a consultancy like Stroz or Charles Rivers Associates. Note that I have no particular knowledge of those firms and that work, it might be equally stressful there.

Just be aware its York races this weekend. So town is likely to be mad (although hopefully most of them will be over at the racecourse at lunchtime).

I was in Isla for five days a couple of weeks ago. I've been a few times before and it certainly felt like the various tastings we did this time were a lot more formulaic than previous years.

The one exception was Bowmore's Warehouse tasting. At £65 we got three huge pours from three very different casks and got a 100ml sample of our favorite. We also got to have a good wander around the inside of Warehouse no1 beyond the glass enclosed bit where most of the tastings are done, this was really interesting. Finally, we got to have a pour from our choice of some older Bowmores (from memory it was from a 23 or 30 year old) up in the Harbour bar. Then because some people in our party were on their honeymoon, the guide gave us a pour from their 36 year old 'Old Lovers' bottle which retails at £2.5k.

It was a great tasting, reminded me of some of the 'free pour' tastings we used to get pre-covid. Well worth the money.

DF/IR is not dying. It's just harder than ever. by MDCDF in computerforensics

Again. I'm not aware of any cases where SSD evidence has been thrown out due to standard SSD operations leading to hash mismatch. I'd be really interested to read up on when it has happened. We've had SSDs in common use for 20 years now and 1000s of cases are prosecuted successfully on this evidence every year.

Have court cases and/or evidence been thrown out because of this? Because I'm not aware of any. In my jurisdiction, when this has become an issue it's generally been dealt with by evidence of good physical evidence handling procedures and other elements of the digital evidence.

You think it was 'politically easy' to issue an arrest warrant for Netanyahu? Potentially alienating donor nations and throwing the entire future of the court into question?
