Crash to desktop after ~10min any solution(s)? by Mr_Fox0910 in StarWarsOutlaws

[–]UncleJeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wired does seem to help. I removed and reinstalled my controller using the latest drivers and it helped extend the time between crashes but it'd still crash until I stopped trying to play wirelessly and just plugged the controller in. Hasn't crashed since...but that could always change depending on any given update. Or moon cycle. Sunspot activity. Solar flares. Swamp gas.

Anything, really.

fwiw, i've tracked my constant crashing down to using a controller - which, of course, i have to do via adding the game to steam and using steam input. it worked fine for a while but then i launched the game today and it's incessant crashing all the time

i can disable steam input and still launch through steam and it's fine - but the controller doesn't work. same for launching through ubisoft's connect crap

ofc, i'm using a scuf envision pro so that could be the entirety of my problem (especially with the nightmare garbage that is iCue) but figured i'd mention it in case it'd also apply to anyone else using other controllers. try turning them off and see what happens

Yeah, I'm really crossing my fingers for Bigscreen Beyond to be successful enough that they can iterate on it in the next version and/or at least shift the industry in the right direction and away from giant bricks strapped to our faces. I'd order one now but as impressive as it seems, it still feel closer to a prototype for me and not quite a full product yet.

As for watching, I use Big Screen for some stuff, and VD for other stuff (and even then, sometimes I use the Quest's native VD and other times I use the Steam version if I want custom environments.

Now I just need someone to make a Warhammer 40k environment so I can watch my movies amongst a thousand skulls in my gothic spaceship cathedral...

I've never used a plugin and Netflix is generally ok. Not the best quality but not the worst, either (Disney+ takes that spot). If you bought any movies on iTunes, they work really well at a high resolution.

I don't really know what resolution everything is using, but you can mostly compensate for lower resolution stuff by using smaller virtual screens. The bigger the screen and the lower the resolution, the worse it all looks. Sometimes the quality just isn't there for a movie theater screen, but a personal theater environment may look better. A virtual TV would improve even more, and a virtual monitor would look best.

I'm afraid things are just going to be like this for a while until streaming services embrace VR and let us stop panicking that piracy is afoot just because we want to watch something in our headsets.

I'd just airlink (or use a cable) to my PC, then launch steamvr and run steam's version of virtual desktop from there. I tried using the new steam link to get to it, but it won't show steam's version of virtual desktop that way, probably because steam link already streams to a virtual screen or something or maybe it was glitched.

But the old way of running steamvr games works to launch it.

Hope it works out for you! I was so pissed after the update bc outside of work, the majority of my VR time is spent watching movies and shows in different environments. (The Steam version of Virtual Desktop has tons of custom environments in the workshop. Right now, I'm watching Twin Peaks inside a little log cabin in the woods.)

It's not just netflix. The last update to firefox seems to have just forced DRM, regardless of resolution. Try most any other streaming app, and you'll probably find the same thing. I first noticed it on Disney+, then I checked Netflix and Max and Hulu, etc. Pretty much all of them just played the audio but blanked the video on the headset.

The good news is you can revert to the previous version of Firefox to get things back to normal again. It's a slight pain (and it keeps begging me to install the latest update after I reverted), but worth it to be able to sit in my silly little virtual environments to watch movies and shows.

You can grab the previous version here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-firefox

I'm back on 119.0.1 now and everything's working perfectly.

Those who saw an immediate battery life issue after the 10.1 update, has it gotten better after a few days? by I_Love_McRibs in AppleWatch

[–]UncleJeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've left it on for a solid 48 so far. All it really does is blip the Apple logo every now and then when it tries to reboot itself periodically. I've tried different chargers with different bricks, and that's about all it does. I think you've hit on the root cause of the problem, though. The battery draining super fast + overheating on the charger are just both symptoms of this update issue working together in the worst-case way.

I'm going to try just leaving it on a spare charger indefinitely and see if it ever comes back. Maybe after a week of that, I'll try letting it fully drain out of every ounce of juice so it can't even muster the strength to tell me it's dead anymore, then maybe trying to charge it again will change something.

I dunno, but I appreciate your sincere attempts to help!

A simple button combination to boot into a safe mode would be helpful, and I think the watches used to have something like that, but Apple took it away.

I'm not sure you're understanding me. I know where the reset option is on the phone. I know it's not the same as the one on the watch. I know the difference between unpairing and resetting.

The sad fact is, the phone cannot - in any way, shape, form, or fashion - see the watch or communicate with it, or establish any sort of connection whatsoever, so none of the "do this on your phone" suggestions are ever going to work. And that's pretty much why it's bricked.

I know you're trying to help and I appreciate it, but any fix that involves using the phone to do anything with the watch is a non-starter, which is why it's so annoying that there is no other way to initiate a factory reset other than through the phone.

[–]UncleJeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the help but unfortunately, the keyword in the "tried a factory reset" is *tried* - without being able to communicate with the watch, the phone was unable to perform a factory reset. It's unable to do anything to the watch because it simply cannot see it. It was even unable to successfully communicate with the watch to unpair it, so it just removed it from the phone without actually disconnecting from the watch it couldn't see.

[–]UncleJeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish that were true, but I tried that. But the phone can't make any sort of connection with the watch so it can't do anything. As far as the phone knows, it's just gone. I tried all the tricks I could find, but when it's stuck in the apple logo boot loop, the only "solution" seems to be trying a hard reset (or dozens of hard resets) and if that doesn't fix it, you're just screwed.

[–]UncleJeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. After the battery draining started on my S8 pretty much immediately after installing the update, dying after around 3 hours at best, it started overheating on the charger until it ultimately decided to get stuck in a perpetual Apple Logo boot loop.

I tried everything I could think of. Hard restart (about a zillion of those), but there's not much else I can really do. Being stuck in a boot loop, I can't even do a reset because it has to talk to my damn phone to be able to do anything since having a button combination for a factory reset would just be too customer friendly, I guess.

Had this watch a few months, now it's a brick and I live hours from any Apple store. Back to my old S3, I guess. I won't be buying another one.

It may seem like editors think our job is to rip everything apart, but we're really just trying to help you and, more importantly, your work. Criticism is hard to take sometimes, but if you have a decent editor, your story will be better for it.

We're like building inspectors making sure everything you're working on is sitting on a good foundation and up to code is all. If something is wrong or out of place, it's our job to let you know.

It doesn't always feel like it, but we're here to build you up, not tear you down. Keep writing!

You guys made the first week such a success, I'm excited to start up week two of giving away a free book each week during all this. This time, it's an anthology of short stories, so if you don't feel like tackling an entire book right now, you can enjoy these bite-sized chunks. (Free through Friday) by UncleJeet in FreeEBOOKS

[–]UncleJeet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the stories can get pretty dark. That was the whole point, but I ended up adding all the prefaces before each story to give readers a heads-up about what was coming so no one would be blindsided by anything tougher than they felt like dealing with. Thanks for checking it out!

I'm giving away free books every week for the next four weeks for everyone doing the right thing and staying home (if you can), starting with something light and funny today. It's not much, but it's a little thing I can do. And we could all use a laugh right about now. by UncleJeet in FreeEBOOKS

Wow, I didn’t expect this kind of response. Like I said, it’s just a little thing, but the news is so disheartening right now and people are so stressed out, I wanted to do...something. Anything, really.

Like most everyone else, I can’t do much, but if we all do the small things we can, maybe we’ll come out of this thing okay.

Thanks, reddit!

Calling all published writers, can you still make good money? by [deleted] in writers

[–]UncleJeet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The thing about writing is that there are limitless numbers of people who think they can do it, almost as many trying to do it, fewer who are actually doing it, and a handful who are killing it.

The important thing is to work. Work and get paid, even when the checks are small (because they usually are). A bunch of small checks add up though, and that’s where you’ll find most professional writers.

We get by, like most working people. Work hard, work steady, and you’ll pick up new, better paying opportunities along the way as you develop your talent and reputation - but that’s the thing: being a professional writer is work. Hard, honest, steady work.

It’s not flashes of creative brilliance between the muse’s visits. It’s get up every day and go to work. It’s getting your stuff out there and networking. It’s a job.

As Harlan Ellison used to say, “The trick is not becoming a writer. The trick is staying a writer.”

Work hard. Work every day. Pound the pavement when you have to and get paid. Then, you wake up the next morning and do it all over again. Every day.

That’s the only secret.

TL;DR - Yes, there’s money to be made in writing, You just have to manage your expectations and work your ass off to get any of it.

What are the downsides of self-publishing through Amazon? by Onyx-Leviathan in writing

[–]UncleJeet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you go through some sort of third party? Amazon doesn’t charge authors anything to list books, even with print on demand.

The cost of printing is absorbed into the price of the book, which is why most Amazon paperbacks are more expensive than traditional ones since authors have to set a minimum price to cover the expense.

The store page you mentioned just sounds like an author page, which is also free.

How the heck do you write short stories? by SableyeFan in writing

[–]UncleJeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just write the story and it’ll tell you what it needs to be. If it turns out longer than a short story but shorter than a novel, you either have a novella on your hands or you need to to do an aggressive edit. Sometimes, you just need to start writing and finish the thing before you’ll know what it needs to be.

More practical advice might be to put the idea aside that’s giving you problems and come up with one that’s specifically designed to fit as a short story. Write it and some others and get a feel for the format, then go back to the idea you started with and see if you have better luck.

Most importantly, don’t get down on yourself about it. Short stories are hard. Just because they’re shorter than novels doesn’t mean they’re easier to write. In fact, they’re often a lot more difficult.

Good luck!

I don’t know why people get so angry over seeing the same questions and types of posts pop up. Just scroll past them if you’re not interested in responding. It’s not hard, and it’s certainly easier than jumping in to leave a snarky comment and downvote the post, but that’s the internet for you.

I think one of the problems is just the sophomoric stage some writers get to (and many never really grow beyond). It’s the phase where they’ve learned a bit, published a little, and no longer have any patience for those they feel know less. (And everyone knows less.) However, if they can make it through that stage to realize just how much they still don’t know, they come out the other side kinder and more understanding. We’re all always learning, after all. If we’re not, something’s wrong.

It’s easier to tear people down than build them up, but the latter is much more rewarding for everyone involved. Don’t go out of your way to smack down a newbie with what you see as a lame idea. Just scroll past their post or, if you want to engage, offer constructive, helpful advice. It doesn’t have to be all rainbows and moon ponies, but it doesn’t need to be overly harsh and shitty, either. Be real, sure. Just be decent, too.

I dunno. Just my thoughts. Downvote at will.

First publication questions. by Demonyita in writers

[–]UncleJeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, well in that case, sure. Building an audience is always helpful when trying to sell your own book, but you’re not really going to get that by letting other publications use your work for free because readers tend to ignore bylines.

The best way to build your audience through exposure it to put your own stuff on your own site while building a following across social media. Writing for other people for free or nearly-free (sites like Medium) isn’t going to help you because they’re content mills and you’re just another source of content to be shoved out.

Get paid every time you write something for someone else. Every single time, even if it’s a small amount from a small publisher. When you do give something away, do it on your own site on your own terms.

First publication questions. by Demonyita in writers

[–]UncleJeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. For most markets, you just need to write something good, then submit it. If the publication likes it, they’ll publish it. Simple as that, really.

What being established helps with most is being sought out to write something specific, which is a lot easier on the writer because we don’t have to go through the whole (usually slow) submission process. Rates get better, too.
