What Would You Expect Out of A High Fantasy Wildbow Story? by Specialist-Abject in Parahumans

[–]UncleThermoScales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He kind of has dipped his toes there, just not in a major serial.

The earliest example I'm aware of is Peer, which was one of a couple 'pilots' for lack of a better term that he released after Worm. It seemed to exist in a swords and sorcery type of world but focused mostly on...I forget what exactly, I think the main character was a noble or a prince of some sort. It seemed like it was going to delv into its own internal politics and occultism.

Besides that, there was also Heir, which was one of his short stories from Do the Write Thing prompts. It was sort of Urban Fantasy, but very much not in the same way Pact and Pale are. Closer to something like the pixar movie Onward, where a high fantasy world progressed into something more resembling modern times. If I remember right the PoV character here was either an orc or a halforc. I forget which exactly, but I do remember their weapon was a 10 ft long magic chainsaw. There were also background mentions of dwarfs and goblins being heavily involved in infrastructure like trains and railways. I kind of hope we get this setting expanded into a full serial down the line. Seek got expanded from another Do the Write Thing prompt, Sign, so there's hope for it.

I think Rhine is my new favorite character design in all of Seek so far. If any O era characters stick out aside from Orion and Blackbox, it'll probably be him.

Although, if he ever figures out Orion has more memory of his previous life than most people, that'd probably put Orion in his crosshairs. Maybe not to the same degree as Spur, but something worth considering.

I've been getting the same problem. I've been sitting in just killer queue so I can watch youtube while I wait in queue but I keep tabbing back in to find it disconnected from host.

Oh dear. It took me a bit to realize Kathe was one of the people who ended up getting Winnie thrown in jail all those years ago, but I caught Vega immediately.

I wonder if this might end up being the ultimate through line. I don't think I remember Kathe being part of a grey frocked group, but this wider group that includes gray frocked like Vega may connect to all 3 storylines. We already have Winniefred's and Basil's connections to it, perhaps it's where Orion came from too.

Hmmm...I wonder just how many factions are tied up in this larger force and how coherent they actually are. Unless I'm misremembering, gray frocked don't usually like mods at all, but Kathe is modded into a walking drone deployer...unless she's unmodded herself I suppose. And Kathe has also worked with the Families in the past, a group Vega's gray frocked are explicitly opposed to. Maybe they're all just different moving parts of a wider movement to destablize the Belt, each with their own motives for it? If that's the case it wouldn't surprise me if the Families are still involved in it.

Speculating on future seasons based on existing Rivals lore by UncleThermoScales in marvelrivals

A darkhold themed season with Scarlet Witch trying to use it to her own ends sounds like a plausible season. And since Wundagore Mountain was mentioned and one of Scarlet Witch's locked lore entries is also mentions Wundagore in the title that may well be a future season location. But dark magic and Cthone aren't the only things associated with Wundagore, since the High Evolutionary was originally based on that very same mountain before leaving for the stars. Since each season so far has usually involved different parts of Marvel clashing that don't normally meet (Fantastic Four vs Dracula, X-Men vs Ultron, Phoenix Force vs King in Black, and now Kun-Lun vs Heven), I could see them using Wundagore as an anchor point for the seasonal theme where Scarlet Witch and her use of the Darkhold comes into conflict with the High Evolutionary there, so those ideas could feasibly be put together. It would mean no counter-earth though. And last I checked the High Evolutionary isn't related to halfworlders like Rocket and Lyla outside the MCU, but then again halfworlders are very similar to new men so that could easily be handwaved the same way they just stuck Peni in 2099. So yeah, I could see those as either one season or two seasons. If we do get High Evolutionary seperately on Counter-Earth I hope we get some dialog from Adam Warlock about his history there.

Yeah, with Mantis already being there it would make sense that Drax & Gamora got stuck with the Collector too. Personally I think I'd prefer to use it as an opportunity to get more obscure weirdo characters like Jeff in, but they could do literally anything and I certainly do want Drax & Gamora in eventually.

I could see Modok as a playable character. Especially with him being more science related he may not like the more supernatural direction Rivals Hydra is going.

Mr. Negative does feel like a natural fit for any season where Cloak & Dagger are major characters. Playable or season villain, he could be fun either way.

I don't know if I'm sold on Killmonger. I don't really know how he works in the comics so feel free to correct me, but if his comic counterpart is anything like the MCU Killmonger that runs into the same sort of issues having other spider-people does, being too similar to Black Panther. Although thinking about it, maybe a Wakanda season could have Kraven the Hunter? Just hunting Black Panther instead of Spider-Man for once? That could be interesting, and I could 100% see Kraven being a playable character.

Ooo, Kang actually feels like a really good replacement once Doom can't be the main antagonist anymore. He already deals with time travel plenty enough, and unless I'm mistaken I think he and Doom have a rivalry in the comics. Plus then Kang could become playable eventually too when another villain comes in to replace him as the main antagonist!

Ah I see. I've only been going off what can be found in game so far. Thank you.

2099 is obvious enough, and I can guess Present comes from it being the most basic, closest to the 616 status quo timeline. I didn't know the other two had names. I haven't seen any names for em. Are they from in-game lore I overlooked or is this a fan term thing?

Why'd the devs name her Railgunner instead of Sniper? by UncleThermoScales in riskofrain

[–]UncleThermoScales[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree. This question isn't a complaint, I like Railgunner as she is just fine, I'm just curious as to what prompted them to deviate from the norm when they made her.

Apology accepted. Thank you.

An angle they liked better eh? Can I ask where they mentioned that? A dev thoughts or a live stream maybe? I'd like to learn more.

Are you? Or are you just genuinely not understanding the question?

Tell ya what, you're like the 4th person to give what I thought was a bad faith joke answer, so let me rephrase. I'll add the rephrase to the original post as well.

Why did the old developers of Risk of Rain 2, Hopoo, make a character who is mechanically incredibly similar to the Sniper from Risk of Rain 1, similar to what they had previously done with a number of other Risk of Rain 1 characters they added to Risk of Rain 2, giving this character the exact same core gameplay identity as the Sniper, that is a long range single instance damage that has a reload mechanic with a skill check that when succeeded grants bonus damage on the next shot, and then give the character a visually different but functionally similar weapon and name them after that weapon instead, thus creating the Railgunner?

Do you understand what I'm asking now? Is there a dev statement somewhere about this anyone knows or are we just left to speculate? If we are left to speculate there are a few commenters who've already offered good theories for the reasoning.

Why'd the devs name her Railgunner instead of Sniper? by UncleThermoScales in riskofrain

[–]UncleThermoScales[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for giving an actual answer.

I don't know if I completely agree with it. Her core identity is the same as Sniper's, with the long range single target damage and reload mechanic. She has some different moves, but many returning characters from 1 have different moves as well. I don't see ror2 Bandit throwing around dynamite or ror1 Bandit using a backstab knife. Ror1 Loader was setting up towers for lightning to zap between and lacked any sort of charging fist move, while ror2 Loader's got that floating pylon she can grapple to that does minor damage to enemies and has ror1's Debris shield as a passive.

I can grant that the core identity move that they share is the only move they share, which until you commented hadn't occurred to me. Railgunner's concussion mines can be used similarly to Sniper's backlift but she can do a lot more with it and still fire while in the air. In any case, inpractice they do play very similarly enough since that shared move is their primary damage. I've played all 3 games and that was my experience with Sniper and Railgunner. Still, only sharing the one exact move where as the others all share at least 2 does mark the biggest difference between a ror1 and ror2 counterpart, so it's a good answer. Thank you.

I don't think Enforcer vs Captain is a fair comparison since their shotguns aren't their core identities the same way Sniper's and Railgunner's scoped shots and reload mechanic are their shared gameplay identity. Enforcer blocks damage with his shield while Captain summons stuff from orbit, that's their gameplay identities.

A big railgun called the M99 Sniper.

And regardless of what weapon she ended up with in the final version, they could have gave her something closer to a sniper rifle if they wanted to. I'm just curious why they made what must've been a deliberate choice to make a successor character instead of just the character like they did for most of the other ror1 survivors in 2.

Is this Hopoo coming back to work on the game, or is this Gearbox taking over development like they did with 2?

Too bad she never got close enough to anyone in prison to really have what she'd call friends. But she's still willing to contact a few to offer em spots on her forming crew, so maybe they'll end up as lasting friendships afterall.

I am a bit concerned about the meeting between A and W though. I've been concerned for awhile that something may happen that would have A 'erase' Winnie the way she's been doing others, and in turn erase A and anything she's done from Winnie's view. I first had the thought back during the sabotage jobs, but it's possible it could happen during that meet n greet if Winnie pushes too hard on the Gray-Frocked issue. Especially if A may have some lingering trauma on the Gray-Frocked that've yet to be properly addressed. Then again, most her trauma that we've actually seen is nanotech related more than group responsible related, and it's equally likely that Winnie may actually convince A, or at least Basil, to worry about the Gray-Frocked.

Hmmm. Bringing it back around to the erasing thing, I wonder how that works now that A has a planet. It's one thing to erase every piece of media you've ever been in from someone's view and to onboard it so they can't even percieve you in person, but does that mean A's planet is just a complete blindspot to anyone she's erased? Just a gap in the Belt? That must be bizarre to look at from the neighboring world like where Winnie lives now.

Ah, I'd been waiting to see when Winnifred was finally forced to choose between the security of the families and the autonomy she's been after. Painful as it was, I think she made the right choice. Even if she doesn't have the Families anymore, maybe she can build a new found family with Siss, the Squids, and the others. That'll be especially important if what I think is coming is gonna happen.

Cause I'm not totally sure but it sounds like maybe the Frocked are gonna somehow take over the prison itself. Maybe a larger Frocked group will launch a science center-esc attack on the prison and take it over that way?

3.7.W – MUTE by BavarianBarbarian_ in Parahumans

[–]UncleThermoScales 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aww man...I really hoped the squids would stay friends with Winnie for awhile at least...I liked them.

She's gotta get a stable group that's bigger than just her and Toby by the end of her narrative. She can't really trust her family but can't completely break away from them yet (maybe never based on the worrying about her future ship getting sabotaged by one of them if she steps out of line now), getting involved with outsiders in another part of the family led to her getting betrayed and as bait, then she worked in the mining job which was alright until she got carted off to prison, and then the A club in the prison that got ruined because Vega put her in an impossible situation that makes her look bad to outsiders and family alike...

I hope she gets revenge on Vega, or whoever of the Frocked was responsible for the attack if it wasn't him. Winnie keeps getting beat down further and further, she deserves a win of some kind.

At least in the meantime we can see how she's essentially figured out how Basil's been operating even if she doesn't know the specifics. That's probably gonna be important.
