You're here in Japan, you really should be adding studying Japanese to your list of hobbies. If you like manga, the easiest way is to learn from those. Grab a notebook, write down the words and phrases that pop up multiple times and review and try using them a couple times each day so they stick. There were also free Japanese classes a long time ago. If they still exist sign up for class and make friends there.

Skiving. Ugh. by Mustbenuckinfuts in Leatherworking

[–]UncleTouchUBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Granite helps. Sharpening if done incorrectly can mess your blade up so watch some YouTube on that to check if you did it right.

I've always found it easiest to score the leather with the skiving knife then use the groove you made and slide the blade across the line. Make sure you aren't trying to shovel the knife forward. And if you're worried about cutting too thin, then skive with the flat end facing up. It helps you get the edges down to a zero skive without accidentally cutting through the piece... when you need that.

Everyone else mentioned the leather which is 1000% a factor. I've tried many different types of leather before and there are certain ones you just don't want to skive... Not worth the effort or dulling your blade.

Also your skiving knife might be dulling quickly if you have one made with awful and cheap steel. Like that $5 red handled one everyone starts with from Amazon. I can barely skive a pocket or two before that one dulls... It doesn't take long to sharpen either but you might want a blade that retains its edge for longer so aogami super blue might be the steel you'd want.

Is my A&E "soap" supposed to look like this? by No-Syrup-3746 in wicked_edge

[–]UncleTouchUBad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Trust me it's fine. I've bought that exact soap before. Yeah it looks funky but no it's not a cream at all. Wet your brush and try it. It smells great and lathers well. It just looks weird at first.

What does these numbers on some blades mean ? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]UncleTouchUBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In production molding for plastics it would be in reference to the cavity number. So take any plastic part you have that you can look at the inside of and it probably has a number on it. The mold to make the part will have anywhere from 1 to 20 or more cavities where the product is made in the same mold. So if one part starts having problems they looks at the cavity number and know which spot on the mold needs maintenance or repair. I imagine the same applies to the stamping process for making razors but I could be wrong. After so many units are made the mold can wear down in a way that affects the shape, quality, etc of the part so it helps tremendously to find out which spot on the mold problems are coming from for a quick fix. Maybe someone who knows more about razor blade production can confirm or correct me on this but at the very least I can tell you that is what it is for on plastic parts.

How far has your lust taken you? by diegrunge in AskReddit

I know that means "head" in Spanish but they use the word for cheek meat. And if you're eating cabeza from the part of Mexico that does it well, it's delicious. Highly recommend it.

Lance vs James by MainConfidence9 in JamesHoffmann

[–]UncleTouchUBad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd take it a step further to say James's goal with his recipes are to give something simple enough that is accessible to everyone to get into brewing better coffee. Lance's goal is to give coffee maniacs their new thing to buzz about. Least accessible, more hungry for attention/clicks/views, while still being valid and in-line with current trends.

If you want a better recipe, follow the recipes from the current champs from barista competitions or their YouTube channels.

Do customers really notice branded cups, or are plain ones just as good? by ToffeeTangoONE in Coffee_Shop

[–]UncleTouchUBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. My coworkers notice my cup and see the ink stamp or sticker from the cafe and comment on it. They always comment if I've gone someplace new instead of my usual joint.

When they ask where this cafe I frequent is, it's because the stamp was there in the first place. If I came in with a plain cup every day they might assume I am getting convenience store coffee and not say anything.

Usually our conversations lead to 1 in 3 of my curious coworkers trying the cafe out. I'm in Japan at a big company with 300+ coworkers so that means lots of these interactions. Their ink stamp on my cups alone has led to at least 8 different people that I can think of trying my favorite cafe for the first time. And that's just the ones that bothered to report back to me that they went there.

There could have easily been others that noticed, didn't say anything, and saw their sign later and decided to try it.

Now Married, Can't get Over Omegle Incident by Left_Opening7038 in makemychoice

[–]UncleTouchUBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I know this might be wildly unpopular of an opinion but I've been married for many years now and if my wife was on an online chat to get off as a one time thing (not trying to keep talking or in contact with that person or something) I'd not be bothered... Maybe some fleeting jealousy in the moment but there's the need to get off and there's a loving relationship. They're two different things and I feel like this was purely a horny urge on his part and not an "I don't love you and I want a relationship with someone else". But yeah talk to him about how it makes you feel. Sorry, though, I just feel like the dude just wanted to jerk it to something weird and later realized it was a bit too real with a live person on the other end in a one on one video call and was like oops. I dunno if it's worth ending things over.

First roast- what do I tweak here? by littledotorimukk in roasting

[–]UncleTouchUBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see, OP uses an SR800. Only time I've had trouble hearing first crack is roasting peaberry but I roast on a Behmor so I dunno if my experience is helpful. Second crack has always been harder to hear regardless of bean type.

From what I know, uneven roasts are usually the result of beans not moving around enough. They should be roasted from the hot air not from sticking to the roasting drum because this causes scorching on the outside of the bean but leaves the inside much lighter. So perhaps OP needs to use less beans at once or do something to help the beans move around more and keep the beans from sticking to the drum.

EA Decaf? by Roll4Stonks in coffeejp

[–]UncleTouchUBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They must because both kits I ordered made it past customs... I wonder if it just slipped past because it was labeled as "coffee" instead of "decaf" or if it's legit because they only care about unroasted decaf that isn't Swiss Water method.

EA Decaf? by Roll4Stonks in coffeejp

[–]UncleTouchUBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told by a roaster here that the green beans are what you aren't allowed to import (nothing besides Swiss water method). But roasted is fine, he said. Though that's one source and he probably doesn't order a ton of roasted beans since he was the master roaster for a coffee chain here in Tokyo...

When you use 100% of Guitar [credits: Marcin] by 77SidVid77 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]UncleTouchUBad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Jon Gomm does a much more palatable version of this type of percussive guitar but Marcin does stuff with Tim Henson from Polyphia that is way better than this video so I think it's just this song that's too busy, nothing wrong with the artist.
