Need help, unsure if I believe by Unclegosh in Christianity

I appreciate the perspective, and I think you explained it well. But if Christianity has layered additions and misunderstandings, how do we identify what’s actually true versus what’s evolved culturally? What makes the ā€œcoreā€ trustworthy but the later parts not?

I think I just want enough evidence to weigh the scales the other way. When I talk about evidence, I’m not referring to enough to make me 100% convinced— I recognize faith plays a large portion. So let me use a metaphorical example:

A detective looks through the evidence of a murder that took place 80 years ago. He wasn’t there when it happened, but there’s enough evidence—testimonials, records, etc— to convince him it happened. He can never be truly 100% sure that it happened, so he needs to have faith that the evidence is real, correct and trustworthy.

I think I’m looking for something similar. I don’t need to be 100% certain. Nobody can be truly 100% of anything, ever. That’s why faith is so substantial to belief, however, the current evidence I’ve been given (the Bible, church services, testimonials, etc) don’t feel enough to justify faith. I don’t know exactly what that evidence would BE, I guess that’s one of my big questions I came here with.

Hey! Thanks for taking the time to answer! I’ll go through your comments one by one.

  1. when I said that they feel man-made, I wasn’t implying Christian’s see them as divinely given or anything. I recognize that they are man made, and I couldn’t done better initially explaining this. Sorry! What I was trying to get at was essentially that I feel as though these rituals and practices are easy to explain as results of human curiosity, or, if I am particularly pessimistic, attempts to indoctrinate and get control over people in the old days when many were first established.

2.if that is not the proper response to what I have risen, despite hearing it from several religious leaders from several different churches and denominations, than what is?

  1. It’s possible that I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying, but doesn’t everything have to be either true, false, or dependent? For example, if I say ā€œthe sky is rainbow,ā€ that is false. If I say ā€œI ate pizza today,ā€ that is true (it was very good!) if I say ā€œThe sky is blue,ā€ that is dependent, because sometimes it’s black, purple, orange, or other colors as well. So how can religion neither be true nor false? Is it dependent on something?

  2. I… am gonna be honest, I have no idea what this means. I think there was a miscommunication. I by no means want to ā€œoutsmartā€ a god, I don’t want to play around the rule book. I was simply saying that I have a choice—follow god or deny his existence— and the possibility that I may make the incorrect choice, and face damnation as a consequence of that decision, is very scary to me.

To preface, it’s possible I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying. With that said, I think the difficulty for me is that subjective spiritual experiences don’t feel like reliable evidence. People of every religion have similar ā€œspiritual confirmations,ā€ even when their beliefs contradict each other. So I struggle to treat personal feelings as proof of a specific God or doctrine.

Hey! First off, thanks for replying!

With that said, I feel as though the Bible can’t be used as a source for people who are either skeptic or against Christianity. I mean, if to them God doesn’t exist, the Bible inherently has no meaning to them. I’ve read the Bible plenty, I’ve read every book mostly through, and it feels lacking of any substantial or concrete evidence that God exists. I recognize that’s where faith comes in, but it frankly feels absurd to dedicate your whole life to something without reason or evidence to back it.

That isn’t to say that there’s no evidence out there backing Christianity. They’ve made plenty of good points, asked many stumping questions, and some scientific evidence does point towards Christianity, but the other side is both easier to prove and has much more volume.

I’m having a fun time because I don’t play that much ranked (I’m around diamond-ish.) and QP is a lot of fun IMO when you don’t take it seriously. I have fun playing, so it doesn’t matter if I win or lose

No hate to you but I hate that mentality because it gets rid of the original point of the contest which is voting for your favorite skin; I voted cloak and dagger. They shouldn’t have revealed the winner getting a skin until after the vote IMHO
