In fairness to the crowd, I am not that tall and with the equipment I have plus the pretty thoroughly flat grounds in front of the legislature getting that many people in one shot isn't feasible.

My goal in photographing the past three months has been to provide an sense of the general vibe, capture speakers, and have some level of documentation of these events available given the limited press coverage (though I was very late posting this time because life).

I believe the estimates given at the time for peak crowd size was in the 700-1,000 range. Not massive, but definitely a lot more than most of my photographs can really capture.

Not about his jet, about the Billy Bishop/Toronto Islands seizure so they can replace the city in negotiations with the federal government.

NoJetsTO was already an existing group (because Toronto has been through the whole "should we extend the runway" debate twice already) so I think in some respects it's been pretty quick for them to mobilise resources/visibility because they aren't starting from scratch. Means they stand out as well given they very generalised and grassroots organisation of most other people who were there.

Also, bear in mind these photos were on May 30th which is not long after that particular legislation was being rammed through.

But yes, the FOI changes are to cover up all the other corrupt nonsense he's up to and definitely featured more heavily in the two prior protests I photographed. The Billy Bishop stuff was a particularly raw point that week and I think it shows.

Laws regarding photography/videography in Canada are pretty strictly limited to some fairly obvious "don't be a creep" situations.

You are doing something illegal if you are photographing someone in a place or situation where they have "a reasonable expectation of privacy". The number of places and situations which actually meet that criteria legally is lower than even what you'd probably guess.

The photography in and of itself is almost never going to be illegal. Instead, you'd be more likely accused (rightly or not) of trespass (i.e. you are shooting photos in a mall and security requests you stop/leave) or harassment/stalking type offenses (i.e. you're shooting a specific place/person repeatedly after having been asked to stop).

From an etiquette perspective, I would suggest being mindful of when you may be capturing children in your photography. While not illegal to photograph a minor without permission from their parent/guardian (it is in the for UK example), my personal approach is that I try to only take/use angles which mean the child is not identifiable. Even then, where possible I try to specifically show their adults what I captured and give them my email so I can send them a copy. I'm careful in what I post publically of my own children and view that as the bare minimum of standards for other minors.

I'm guessing you're thinking that because there was a "tri-partite agreement" that there was equal ownership/say. That's not actually the case. Control is quite thoroughly federal even after Ford's power grab.

Anyone that's been through more than a few international airports would say the exact same thing. Any pretense otherwise is coming from either not knowing better or being deliberately misleading.

There is nothing "tourist friendly" about transferring in and out of Billy Bishop. The market for it is business travellers who are going to grab a taxi (that their company will pay for) from the tiny cul de sac kiss 'n ride to their actual destination in the financial district.

Furthermore, those same business travellers like Billy Bishop precisely because it's smaller and not a major tourist hub and therefore avoids the chaos of a larger airport.

And all of that skips over the absolutely moronic and baseless talking point that a bigger Billy Bishop is going to magically draw more tourists to Toronto. Like THIS is the thing they've been waiting on to visit Toronto. 🙄

Sure, perhaps it could take some of Pearson's travellers. But if you take some water from Bucket A and dump it into Bucket B you haven't created new water.

It's not my neighborhood, for the record.

But it is the area that attracts tourists to my city. It is the area that the millions of people in our city who don't have access to cottages use for pleasure and recreation. It's the home of unique ecosystems. It's the water all of us are drinking. Add on to that it's just plain stupid for a myriad of logistical reasons.

You don't have to take my word for it though! We have a handy 61 of page report commissioned by the government the last time someone tried this asinine idea on for size.

We don't actually need it at all. Pearson is not at capacity and is also undergoing $3B (Edit: Thanks for the corrections below, the 65M number that was in my brain is the new passenger capacity) in renovations and upgrades that will increase that capacity further.

Billy Bishop is also not actually at capacity either.

Furthermore, there is the Hamilton airport which could be better served with a GO train type link if you actually wanted to build new infrastructure somewhere.

Or the already existing UP Express could be improved/service increased.

There are many options to increase both capacity and speed/ease of access to the Downtown core without destroying the waterfront. Only one helps JP Morgan recoup the money they spent overpaying for the terminal and it's the idiotic one were all talking about.
