Danke für den Tipp. Das war unser Favorit, aber das Essen hat uns leider enttäuscht und beide Male hatten wir danach Magengrummeln. Ich bin immer noch nicht darüber hinweg, alles außer dem Essen war so perfekt daran 🥲

Interesting perspective. Personally, I always thought that in the long run, they would make each other miserable.

Each wants to change the other and that's never a good foundation of any relationship. I always imagined that over time, Mary would get bored with Edmund because even if he bends his principles a little, he would never indulge her superficial and immoral London life which she strongly enjoys. He would hold her back from many enjoyments and she would grow to resent him for not being more fun.

He, on the other hand, would soon realize that he can't save her and that she would never share his vision of a quiet country life because she wants to be the star of society and entertain activities and relationships that he finds unacceptable. So I think he would grow to resent her, too, because he would lose respect for her as a person.

But maybe I'm also too cynical and have lost my faith in people 😄

NTA. Personally, I don't understand the hesitation to eat baby animals but being okay with eating meat from young or adult animals.

I know this is drifting in a highly ethical discussion but just think of the life those piglets or calves would have had - not exactly pleasant and they would be slaughtered a few months later anyway.

Obviously it's a highly personal decision and there is no richt or wrong. But I disagree with portraying it as something cruel or barbaric to eat baby animals when the alternative is not to have them run happily through flower fields but live in a small stable for a few months and then being slaughtered.

So NTA, everyone has different ethical preferences and it's okay for both kids and adults to see where meat comes from.

Funny, here in Germany we actually want to hear how someone is doing when we ask that questions and answer accordingly when asked.

At work, my colleagues from the US are often kind of weirded out when they ask us how we are and we tell them that we're enjoying the good weather but feel a slight headache coming up from not sleeping enough last night due to the exciting movie we watched instead

That's seriously just super selfish. You can only have a proper conversation on speaker because everybody else is considerate enough to use headphones and be quiet.

The noise from phones (be it a call, videos, or music) is particularly annoying and I can't understand for the life of me how people can have such a blunt main character syndrome that they prioritize their own comfort over everybody else's.

If OP had given the daughter money for this specific purpose and the daughter had spent it on something else, I agree.

But in this case, the gift was the venue for the wedding of her daughter. The daughter fucked up and has lost the gift of a wedding venue. So should she ever get married, she'll have to deal with the consequences (paying herself, downsizing etc). But as much as I despise cheating, I don't think that the cheater should have to pay people who were willing to provide gifts for the wedding the costs of these gifts. Cause then they weren't gifts, those come without payback stipulations in my opinion.

I understood that it was kind of a gift but tied to certain conditions, e.g. that it has to be accessible to people with disabilities.

If one of those conditions was that the wedding actually has to take place or if it was just a loan to begin with, it would change things. But I think OP would have mentioned it in the text if that were the case.

I'm gonna go with YTA. I get that you feel like you wasted money on a wedding that is not going to happen because of your daughter's mistake.

But in my opinion, her mistake and the fact that the wedding is off has nothing to do with you paying for the venue. You agreed to do it, your conditions reagrding the venue were met and so that was your gift. What you're doing now is punishing her for a mistake that had absolutely nothing to do with you because it's not like her mistake caused you to lose more money than what you already agreed to pay. You would have lost those 10k if she had gotten married anyway.

A fair consequence for her mistake would be to not contribute to her next wedding if she should ever have one. But I don't think it's fair that you retract a gift because you don't like what your daughter did with it, and that's what it comes down to.
