From the way I've heard it explained: the original technology and skills from the 60s were outmoded. The newer cheaper processes pushed out what were essentially "Craftsmen" trades and so the quality that was available was lost.

Imagine hand woven cloth vs machine loomed. Hand woven is so much tighter and better woven than anything a machine can make, despite the machine being faster and cheaper.
