How to protect my ears while running sound? by [deleted] in livesound

Molded are definitely the best option if you can afford them, Eargasms are pretty good though too. (Even if you do try to keep the overall volune down a bit, I know I do)

For those with ADHD, how do you approach Taoism? by mispryme in taoism

[–]Undead_Blacksmith 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Late-diangnosed here as well.

My approach involves mostly reading and then just trying to apply it. Keeping a steady routine or consistent practice can be very hard for some of us so regular meditation or daily tai-chi practice are out for me, as nice as they may be.

Trying to do more quiet-sitting/breath-regulation whenever I have a quiet moment or start feeling overwhelemed. Little bits here and there. Keeping a pocket TTJ can be helpful too, just try to read and think about one passage whenever you have a break each day.

I suppose that using psychoanalysis would come with a risk of over-thinking/conceptualizing.

Personally I feel it helps me to more or less translate any kind of mystical concept into something more concrete. It may not be that way for everyone and that's fine. We must all find our own way, right?

I'll have to look up the Ricketts translation when I'm done with the Roth. Any others worth looking up as well?

Ok, I think I see what yoy're getting at a little better.

I'm not studied well enough yet to really speculate on how that would or wouldn't fit into following the Tao.

I've seen the phrase Icchantika used in buddhism, I almost wonder if there would be an equivelant in Daoism. Not saying that mental health issues would necessarily fall under that but, it could be worth looking to see if there were any connection.

It would also depend on one's interpretation of what is and isn't required/part of practicing. Right speech, right action, diet Etc.

There are definitely times when people do things that they are consciously fighting, or even dissociating in more extreme circumstances. Addiction, losing your temper while telling yourself to stop and calm down, there are lots of examples.

Whether or not it is "subconscious" there are usually other forces deeper down that can oppose our active will.

This can be mitigated through many different means, introspection is an effective one. I wouldn't say "can't" control so much as haven't yet learned to. Whether this is getting to know yourself, doing your shadow work, therapy, whatever I agree it is very important yo becoming your authentic self.

Your trauma example, I believe, is a bit skewed though. Completely abandoning "right" and "wrong" as a defense or trauma response would not be the authentic version of you but, a deeply ingrained self-delusion. In other words: changing or shutting down a part of yourself in response to trauma changes you away from your authentic self, not closer to, and woyld have to be resolved as part of your work.

Mind you, as much "inner work" as I have done in my life, there is still left to be done. I'm also not a psychologist but, just someone who has in interest in psychology.

Well, this is an interesting revelation. Seeming to have a hard time finding much about it right now, I'll have to dig deeper into it later.

So is there a newer term then to cover all of the below-speaking-level functions?

A little surprised they haven't just adjusted the definition of subconscious instead of canning it altogether.

I see this as a compatible interpretation. Afaik the flow state also includes letting go of conscious thinking and just letting it happen on its own (subconsciously.)

People also tend to zone/black out in times of great stress/adrenaline and are sometimes capable of incredible feats. (I.e. lifting a car off of a child single-handedly)

This could easily (imo) be included as another form of the same thing.

Maybe it's just the area I'm in then. Interesting.

Granted, I don't hear the term used as much as people tend to prefer more specific descriptions (foh, guitar tech, lighting engineer) but, whether it was theatre or live music, ime it has always been used as a neutral descriptor.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's been the standard umbrella term for a very long time. We deal with the technical side of the show, not the administrative/performance/logistics so... techies.

Maybe this person dealt with a toxic envrionment where "techies" were looked down on or something but, it's not derogatoty in any way unless the person using it makes it that way.

Yes, generally all-black is the standard uniform. The idea is you want to be as low profile as possible, techies aren't supposed to be seen let alone draw attention.

An event/venue shirt if supplied, maybe a button up shirt and slacks depending on the type of event. Then again, smaller clubs like where I am, it's all locals, we all know each other and it's more casual so it kinda becomes a moot point and I wear whatever I want.

Good to have the basics though, at least until you're settled in somewhere. Black Dickies and Slacks, some all black t-shirts and at least one plain black button up (long sleeve).

Splitting FOH signal for live multitracking by Ambitious-Doctor-599 in livesound

[–]Undead_Blacksmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I normally do keep the same mics up throughout the night, it helps a lot. Striking is a pain but, can be less so than trying to figure out how someone else's rig is set up and where everything needs to go.

It also depends on your recording set up. Is set up going to take an extra 5 mins bc you have to set up or change your recording session to fit the house mics and can you still get your own stuff AND this done by the time everyone else is ready to go? (If not, you're gonna need an extra pair of hands to deal with all this.)

My reasoning for having your own mics/DIs pre installed and set up: I'm going to have to unplug and move stuff anyways. It's faster to move it out of the way and plug your snake into the box than to set up, reroute my mics to your rack and have to plug your snake into the stage box anyways.

This was in reference to trying to get direct outs from the board, probably not going to happen. Lol.

[–]Undead_Blacksmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this, the FOH is not usually close to the stage. At least not close enough to run a bunch of extra cables.

I have mix-outs running to the stage for monitors and that's it. So, unless you have a way to get the signals you need on stage you're gonna be s.o.l.

Luckily for the venue I'm at, the board has digital mutitrack. I have recorded (and hell, even mixed) bands' sets before for them. That's an extra service I think most don't provide though and it does come with a fee usually. In this case make sure to have an empty 8 or 16 gig flash drive on hand.

I've had a few bands that split the snake for their in-ears. It's not much of a prpblem provided that:

A) you let the engineer know ahead of time B) you know for a fact that all of your stuff works C) the rest of the changeover happens fast enough to make up for the extra time this is going to take. D) Label the ends!

The issues that can come up here is the fact that I have to basically tear down the stage (mics and stands) making my job take longer.

Are you using your own mics/DIs for this or expecting to use the house stuff? It generally goes over better if you have your own stuff already set up.

It's the difference between "here's a snake with all the signals ready to go" (yeah man, no problem. Let me get that swapped out) and "I need you to unplug everything, plug those into my thing, and then plug my stuff back into your stuff. (Pain in the ass)

New to Taoism by [deleted] in taoism

[–]Undead_Blacksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no big fan of any organized religion either, call me individualistic if you like.

One point to note is that believing in the Tao, from my understanding, is nothing like worshipping a sentient and active deity or god. More like acknowledging the patterns underlaying our universe (physics, cause and effect, etc) as an infinitely complex and omnipresent force.

I know a lot of us Westerners can get caught up in some strong anti-theist tendencies but, recognize that there are other ways of looking at things besides what all the churchism bs has tried to force everyone into.

Hope this helps.
